Unos, dos, tres, catorce!
Turn it up loud, captain.
Lights go down it's dark
The jungle is your head
Can't rule your heart
A feeling so much
Stronger than a thought
Your eyes are wide and though
Your soul it can't be bought
Your mind can wander
Hello hello
(Hola)
I'm at a place called Vertigo
(Donde esta?)
It's everything I wish I didn't know
Except you give me something
I can feel, feel
The night is full of holes
As bullets rip the sky
Of ink with gold
They twinkle as the
Boys play rock and roll
They know that they can't dance
At least they know
I can't stand the beats
I'm asking for the cheque
The girl with crimson nails
Has Jesus 'round her neck
Swinging to the music
Swinging to the music
Hello hello
(Hola)
I'm at a place called Vertigo
(Donde esta?)
It's everything I wish I didn't know
But you give me something
I can feel, feel
All of this, all of this can be yours
All of this, all of this can be yours
All of this, all of this can be yours
Just give me what I want
And no one gets hurt
Hello hello
(Hola)
We're at a place called Vertigo
(Donde esta?)
Lights go down and all I know
Is that you give me something
I can feel your love teaching me how
Your love is teaching me how
How to kneel, kneel
Yea, yea, yea, yea, yea, yea, yea, yea
Yea, yea, yea, yea, yea, yea, yea, yea

This sounds like a mid 00s car commercial soundtrack.

This song is emblematic of U2's post-Achtung pivot from "writing great songs" to "filling stadiums with noise and yelling."

A very average band. Not a lot of musicianship. An English Springsteen.
Tell me The Edge's guitar riff in the final 30 seconds of this song doesn't make you pick up an air guitar -- and I'll say you don't love rock-n-roll.
It's got a good beat, and you can dance to it ... or drive really fast to it ... or give yourself whiplash by nodding vigorously to it. Love it!

My mind goes back to when I first heard this song loud... I was in Tower Records, in Shinjuku, thinking I should see if U2 had released their new one yet, and someone had put this on the store system, and CRANKED IT, and I immediately made the purchase. The CD I got came with a bonus DVD, and I showed it to the Advanced English classes I was teaching. Among the comments by the students, who thought it rocked as much as I did, was, "I'm very surprised — they are not young. But they have much energy, and good music sense!" I loaded it into my iTunes and a few months later took it with me on my 3-month vacation stay in Tuscany, though I didn't need to — the Radio Roma station played this and other cuts from the record almost daily. U2 are key players on the soundtrack of my life!

2 things.
1. The most interesting interpretation of the count in I've seen is the following:
t "All That
You Can't Leave Behind" and J33-3, let's work with this. Exodus is the
second book of the Bible. So if 2 = Exodus, then it becomes "about Exodus
3:14," which reads:
God said to Moses, "I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the
Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.' "
This is the great I AM verse, where Moses learns YHWH. Isn't there a song on
the new album, "Yahweh"? I'm sensing a theme here
I'm no expert on the bible, but it fits Bono's style, as he's dropped refences to it and God in almost every song he's written.

not that i, you know, want to promote marketinbg crap or what have you, but FWIW Sting only sold the rioghts to that video to Jag when MTV refused to play it. i passed along a pretty complete explanation i9n the comments for that track (desert rose).
my understanding the the U2/iPod deal is they get no cash for the commercials (as why would they, really, since they're exposure for the single and album), but they split the profits for the special edition U2 iPod with Apple.

heheh I agree with you. how can people say an album that hasn't been released yet tortures their ears? ;)
One day I caught the ipod commercial twice and heard the song on four different radio stations... All in the space of ninety minutes. As a result, this song is dead to me. Sad really.
It is growing on me. First time I heard it, it was like seeing a close friend that I have not seen for a long time. Sort of like not knowing what to do or say. Now we started from the same point we left. Yes!
Regarding, "Uno, dos, tres, catorce"... Perhaps they fit with the actual meaning of the word "vertigo" (a confused or disoriented state) that is used for the title/theme of the song? A suggestion that things are "out of control"?

The Edge' riff and the hard driving rhythm is the most exciting part of this song, I think. Not a very memorable refrain and guitarsolo. A bit like the Stones' You Got Me Rocking, while it doesn't really rock (anymore). Talking about the Stones, the cover photo of this album is very similar to Stripped. Must be because of Anton Corbijn's very recognizable photography.
Just like REM, Mick Jagger, etc. it seems they feel the need to proof they can still rock hard and straight forward when they want to. Problem is that after fourty it often starts to sound a bit forced (believe me)
The use of this song for the Apple commercial harms the band's integrity (which I always thought they had) a bit, IMO. But what would we do in their place?

Hey now.. I'll try to not feel insulted. Obviously he's not saying "un" as in the English article "a". It's counting, you crazy crazy guy! If this is the 14th albumn, that might make sense somewhat... if nothing else, this is a distracting and therefore bad start to an otherwise OK song.

It doesn't break any new ground, but rather mines some acoustic nuggets of the past. Should please longtime fans who would recognize this, or not. I think it rocks without being particularly innovative.

So my daughter called this up on the XM the other day. Since she had the box, I asked who was playing. "U2," she said, "Vertigo."

Yes and about fricking time I might add. Well there's still a little of the old bit in there, but it sounds like he's climbed out of his box for this one.
Most bands eventually dry up and we buy there albums just to complete the collection, but these dudes are still on another level. Unbelievable!!

U2 seems to have returned to raw stadion rock sound with this single. Not terribly unexpected or inspired, but nonetheless I like what I hear.
Sounds at one point just a little bit maybe like "You Keep Me Hangin' On" by the Supremes... But that's a good song too so it's okay.

U2.Com can exclusively reveal that the bandâs new single is called Vertigo
and will be released on November 8th (the full album How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb will be released on November 22nd).
Vertigo, an epic U2 track with big guitars and soaring vocals, was
produced by Steve Lillywhite at the bandâs Hanover Quay Studio in Dublin.
The single also features another brand new track, Are You Gonna Wait
Forever?, along with a cover of Neon Lights which was originally written
and recorded by Kraftwerk, plus a Vertigo remix by Jacknife Lee.
The DVD features all-new shots of the band taken in Lisbon recently by
Anton Corbijn - as well as a stunning live performance of Vertigo, shot at
the studio and directed by Richie Smyth.

By the second or third listen I'll probably be nudging this from 7 to 8. While it isn't a carbon copy, it has the same punk energy as their early stuff - which seems to be reflected in the album name "How to Disarm an Atomic Bomb" (I think). The glory days of Boy and War returned? I'm excited. And Bono's voice is in pretty good shape here...
