I saw a modest dream
The kind that can't speak up
And lost before it's let out
In the north we hold our tongues
But down here I believe
When you pull your hair back it's so easy to see
This has not been thought through
There are things that we've done that we cannot undo
There are things I can't hear when we're telling the truth
At a table out in Bethel
When I was thirteen
The criminals were saying
Liked how I was silent
The cold was the container
For the sparseness of our speech
The expression in our hands
Was all that we'd need
But down here I believe
That I made a big deal with a girl that can't bleed
Now I see red and black
and an evening that kills I want to take it back
It's an evening that kills and I can't take it back
I'm going home, back to new hampshire
I'm so determined, I'm so determined
To lay in lakes and see my sisters
I will hit my brother and hold my mother
This probably won't work out
we might not live forever
While there's nothing to confess
Please pay attention
And I know that it's brief
There's not nearly enough in one night to have seen
What you had in your hand
Was much more than the gold that I let go to grab
So much more than the gold that I let go to grab
The kind that can't speak up
And lost before it's let out
In the north we hold our tongues
But down here I believe
When you pull your hair back it's so easy to see
This has not been thought through

I bought this song off of Amazon. Thanks for introducing me to Matt Pond PA, Bill!
Dreadful.
...anybody else hear lazarus in this, right at the beginning?..

I heard the sound my doorbell makes in that riff. Otherwise a decent song.
Isn't that guitar bit near the chorus reminiscent of the alien riff from "Close Encounters of the Third Kind"?

This is a great album, and all of their stuff is similarly solid. I hope to hear more of these guys on here.
somebody ought to cover this song. SOmeone who can actually make it interesting to listen to. Nice lyrics tho.

Oh god I'm following my own comment? Hey I love the Shins, but Matt Pond is no Shins, he's just MPPA, and absolutely as good or better in his (their) own way.

In NH, all deer fly.
True story.
Where did they get the flying deer?
If they got a song about N.H., then its probably a ski lift. Not much coal in the Granite State.

And a cover like a Christmas card. That's purty too.
But is that a coal tipple in the background or a ski lift?

thank you, thank you, thank you. one of my favorite bands, EVER.

Soothing...except for the constant high hat. It seems out of place and disturbs the mood of the song. Maybe it's just me.
It's a tambourine actually !
I like this band - no thundering fireworks or lightning across the sky, but they evoke a great atmosphere with subtle chord changes and mostly thoughtful lyrics.
Does this make anyone else really sad and homesick? I wanna go home too!
home!

yup it is!

Oh, everybody's a critic. Stronger drumming would ruin the tone of the song. Yeah, let's have a Ginger Baker drum solo in there.

agreed...the rest of the arrangement is much more dynamic...great sleepy-eyed vibe overall.

Me too. A lot.

Lovely. I think this will be my next CD purchase.
Recently purchased and it is great. Nice chilling out music. Definitely one of my favorites on the disc.
Yay! One of my favorite MPPA songs. Fills me with quiet and peace. That bit in the middle that starts with "I'm going home.." is brilliant. A wonderful band, and a very solid album.
It's my first time hearing matt pond PA... very cool. And a song about my beautiful state? A song that doesn't mention anything about living free or dying? Wow!
Great stuff.
Lovely. I think this will be my next CD purchase.
no big deal about this song. I've heard way better stuff from The Shins.
Damn, I love this album. This is easily my favorite matt pond PA song, and this album is my personal favorite of theirs. It stops me dead in my tracks every time it plays.

Um, is it just me, or am I hearing the Big Ben chimes?
Yeah, I hear Westminster Quarters in there also. We're not alone.

Nice. How's the rest of the CD?
highly recommended. this is one of his best albums so far, imho. Measure and Deer Apartments are both fantastic as well.
his newest one (Several Arrows Later) is still growing on me. it has been getting a lot of play on public stations like kexp, xpn.
A song about NH?? How cool! AND I love it! (NH and the song...)
NH is fabulous by the way. It's like living on vacation.
Nice. How's the rest of the CD?
Well done!
Hmm... how'd this tune make it onto the playlist while "Closer" was booted?
That was quite pleasant. A nice tune to relax to.
seems quite good, maybe could have gone a little somewhere.
Very nice.
Really nice arrangement. Looking forward to hearing it again.

I did. A more accessible, less interesting Bright Eyes.

I think this has to grow on me... I'll start at 5
This has been on my "must get" list for too long. Must.....reach......record store
I thought I was hearing Bright Eyes before I looked at the title. Anyone else think that. Alex
Heck, it gets an 8 just for the title ... and since it doesn't totally suck, I upped it to a 9. Go NEW HAMPSHIRE!! :)
Another "New Hampshire" song! Soon, oh so soon, we'll catch L.A.
ooh - I love the production on this - this is a great sound!!!
You mean anybody else here New Hampshire in Lazarus since NH preceded Lazarus by 2 years.
