Mazzy Star is the reason I started playing Guitar back in the 90s. One night I saw an acoustic performance on MTV and was simply stunned by the sound. This would have been recorded around spring or summer 1993.  I've been noticing there was a lot of sad music that came out that year.  I blame REM and some of those dark tracks from Automatic For The People... it seemed to have started with them.

I wonder the same. For me the music only gets as important as it used to be when it reminds me of a personal experience or I can strongly relate to it in some way. In those times I connect with the music even more than I did when I was young. Occurrences of this are relatively rare though, but seem to happen more than I care to admit due to the high volume of RP that I listen to! I'm not sure if this is related, but recent research has shown that the teenage brain has somewhere about 10 times (1000 percent) of the hormones of a full adult. All those hormones sloshing around may have messed a bit with our perceptions at the time. Or perhaps it was something else messing with my perceptions at the time too, lol!

like this album alot. (yes, a lame comment but there you are!)
updating: just read the comment about sad music and am perplexed. can we help where music takes us, and perhaps where we need to be taken? why do  we have to try to analyze every lyric or even where the feel of the piece takes us? can we not simply let ourselves be moved by either what where we are taken or when a lyric just seems devastating or very emotive of something we feel or think we understand at hearing it?

Favorite song of a good friend of mine who passed away many years ago. Hearing this song always brings me back to Williamsburg Brooklyn in 1996, when I lived this song, played it over and over again in an attempt to grab a wisp of smoke, and have never been the same since.

This song is pure musical perfection for me. An amazing work!

I would swear I hear a cello expressing deep bass notes and resonant emotion underneath the sweet guitar and Hope Sandoval's marvelous voice; but Wiki says it's a violin.
