Where can a sick man go
When he can't choke down the medicine the old doc knows
A specialist came to town
But he stays at home
Saying no one knows so I don't
Honey when in Rome
Where can a teacher go
Wherever she thinks people need the things she knows
Hey those books you gave us look good on the shelves at home
And they'll burn warm in the fireplace teacher
When in Rome
Grab a blanket sister
We'll make smoke signals
Bring in some new blood
It feels like we're alone
Grab a blanket brother
So we don't catch cold
From one another
I wonder if we're stuck in Rome
Where can a dead man go?
A question with an answer only dead men know
But I'm gonna bet they never really feel at home
It they spent a lifetime learning how to live in Rome
When he can't choke down the medicine the old doc knows
A specialist came to town
But he stays at home
Saying no one knows so I don't

Excellent!
The Carter Family if they took a time capsule to 2004.

RP needs more Chris Thile and especially The Punch Brothers.
Chris Thile is in rare company: his name is often mentioned in the same breath as Bill Monroe (!!), Marty Stuart, and other superlative mandolin players.

I've known Nickel Creek since they were kids playing at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, KS. Chris Thile is the best mandolin player on earth right now and is incredibly musically gifted. And yes, they definitely have a bluegrass background. Dig a little deeper into Nickel Creek's work and you will find some gems.

Clever. Its not a question of Bluegrass origins. It's a question of the band, Nickel Creek, and their influences. My comment meant that the primary influence for Nickel Creek comes from American Bluegrass not from anything directly Celtic. Check them out, in no self description of the band or its music will you find them saying that they drew on Celtic music. Just sayin' yo. . .
It's all good, I love it all. Bluegrass and Celtic.

Great tune...odd video though.
It was OK the first couple hundred times. Now, not so much.
I'd never heard them until Coyote FM (the local "innovative" radio station that caved in to the boring classic rock format) played them when they first released this CD. I used to listen to this while I was watering plants at the nursery and watching the sun rise. Beautiful images - great song.
Lubs anything Chris Thile sings!

What other songs did they do that are like this one? I like it a lot... No drums, and yet quite rhythmic.

Perhaps. We (and a bunch of RPeeps who attended the Raisin' Hell in the Bluegrass meetup) saw them on their last show of their Farewell (For Now) tour, on October 21st, 2007.
I like the "For Now" bit of that.

thanks for the play

Just seen them in Asheville NC...They where good but with there type of music I would have enjoyed it better if it was in a smaller venue. The large auditorium does them no justice.
Nice tune, just about the best I've heard from them, not as syrupy as their more standard stuff, and no question, these kids can flat out play.
But that is one godawful album cover.
Fun band to see live.

I think a lot of Phillip Glass stuff could qualify as pretentious and underdeveloped.
But I would also argue that with most stuff called pretentious here, it isn't so much the material is pretentious as it is the reviewer wants to sound smart, superior, and discriminating. If I'm reading a post, I pretty much stop and move on to the next one as soon as I hit the word pretentious. "Pretentious" is a crutch.
Now I should probably go through all my reviews and make appropriate edits. Maybe starting with the Phillip Glass crack.

Actually, AK produced their third album, but they had already picked up armloads of IBMA awards before she entered the picture (though I'm sure she has been an influence, especially to Sara). Chris Thile had two Grammy awards before his 16th birthday. I saw them several times in their teenage years, and a couple of times since they have "made it", and they never disapoint. Incredible musicians, grounded, good kids. Chris will one day be recognized as the greatest living mandolin player, I believe (he's got some icons in front of him for now, though).
Something about this reminds me of J C Young "Darkness Darkness"
I'm partial to Nickel Creek...have a listen to "the fox" and others for a more "authentic" Nickel Creek experience. Two fantastic songs in a row!

Nickel Creek is one of those bands that, while very good, are that much better live. They're going to be in the 3 Rivers Music Festival this weekend, and they are one of many "don't miss" acts. Aretha, George Clinton, Sam Bush, Delbert McClinton, Earl Klugh, Julie Roberts, Pat Green, Richie Havens, the list goes on and on. Unfortunately, Pinetop Perkins will not be there this year due to illness. If you have nothing better to do, scoot on down to Columbia, SC, and enjoy 2 1/2 days of a wide sprectrum of music. It's good for the soul.

So sorry for jbtidwell in Hot 'Lanta and for brighteyedblasphemer. I left Georgia and the South in general as soon as I could. Guess I also shouldn't move to Michigan (too bad, the parts I saw were pretty.) Intend to live only where the local radio stations are good. For me, that is a good barometer of how at home I will feel.
Anybody here that likes this music MUST check out Lonely Runs Both Ways by Alison Krauss & Union Station!
You might also want to check this album - 40 Days by The Wailin' Jennys
Listen to the Amazon.com samples for both these albums. Use the first column of players shown on Amazon.com's Samples section - Amazon.com's own player which will take you through the entire album.

I agree! Excellent album and excellent band! However...NOT BLUEGRASS. Even they don't really know what genre to put their music in but have said that while they started out with bluegrass roots, they aren't bluegrass. I wouldn't have such a problem with it if I didn't think that there were a large amount of people that avoid checking out Nickel Creek because they "don't like bluegrass". Yet, when I play NC for friends who fit the "anti-bluegrass" bill, they're constantly asking "Wow! Who is this?"

Nickel Creek is great! However, I'm getting a bit burned out on this song lately. Lots of great tunes... need to hear some of the others a little more often.
If these three are not the most talented musicians around today, I don't know who is. Truly an astounding album by an astoundingly talented trio.
I really need to get this album.
Excellent.
Brilliant follow to Meyer, Douglas & Barenberg. Two sets of virtuosos. Likeable indeed.
Three Cheers for NEW-Grass!
A solid 10.
Sounds like Timbuk3 playing music for Firefly. :)

I am not a fan of Country music as well. I generally can't stand the stuff. But our commercial radio rules dictate that this must be played on country radio. I first heard these guys play and be interviewed on "A Prairie Home Companion" on NPR. I would classify their genre as Bluegrass, but pigeon holes are pigeon holes.
Good stuff none the less. I will be looking forward to buying this CD as well.
Enough free association for now. Back to work!!
