US highway from north to south
It's history breathing
Get out from under the gun
Drive down Highway 61

Hannibal's son saw the Gold Rush
Saw the civil war done
Then settled down some
On Highway 61

There's no reason to feel downhearted
There's music in the wheels it's there to be found

Goodnight Irene inside the prison walls
Killed a man and lived to sing about it all
Stella 12 on Highway 61

The immigrant son left the mining town
Electrified the traditional
And had it out on Highway 61

Great comment!  I love Neil Young and Son Volt.   Not much of fan of Dylan.  But I respect your opinion and taste.

Thom Yorke
Bob Dylan
Neil Young...

It's a long list before I would get to Jay Farrar.
Edgy, rough, unfinished, kinda raw.  Scruffy, unpolished, and smelling vaguely of sweat and something...moonshine, maybe.  A portrait of an unabashed folk rock garage band.  Son Volt is like a period piece, authentically capturing that essence.  Some art works best when it's real and in your face, raucous like a jaybird.  Likable enough - it gets a 7.

Wow. Both listeners can't tell a skilled guitarist when they hear one. I'd be interested to hear either of these dipsticks play something as good if what he's doing is so simple. Just controlling feedback like that is an art form in itself. I can't say I agree about the vocalising either. I'm going to give this a 10 just to annoy the idiots on here.

Not the most innovative songwriting, but one of my favorite vocals in recent music.

Craft beers are hardly unique any more. I think the OP was just paying homage to a recognized brand with a long history.

Fun song...could use a vocalist.
I believe Son Volt has the lowest consistent ratings of any artist whose songs I have rated on RP. There are other artists who have mostly low, but some higher (Smashing Pumpkins, Neil Young, Pink Floyd*), but I have yet to hear a Son Volt song I'd rate above a 4.

I hear you but raise the point that isn't it so much more fun just to be plain rude to a stranger? My grandmother taught me a very good lesson. She said, ' if you can't say anything bad about someone don't say anything at all!'. She also said,' what's for you won't go by you'. She rued that a little as she got run over by a bus.... :(

I think many - including me - would argue that technical accuracy does not necessarily translate directly into good art. In many cases, technical flaws can be outweighed by skill in another area - Bob Dylan, for instance. Or maybe you think he's a hack, too. If so, we have no basis for discussion.

God forbid anyone have a dissenting opinion on RP!  I've been noticing these types of comments appear more and more frequently in song comments:  "you don't like this song?  You obviously know nothing, and should go away forever.  Your opinion is not welcome here."

Uhh. Got to say this. I cringe every time this guy sings. Have to turn the volume down every time until it's over. Just can't listen to this voice. It is too bad for words. I have very broad tastes in music and have never felt that strongly about any singer. But this guy is just not broadcast-able even if other aspects have some merit. This is my first post. I felt compelled. Just could not bottle it up any longer. Sorry.

Yeah, same sets come around every so often. Not so much you would remember yourself, but it's funny when you read an earlier post where a reviewer lists a string of songs to express pleasure/pain/bliss- and it's the same set you just heard. Still, you cannot beat the variety and thought going into the programming. Keep it coming!

great song. Too bad the rest of the record does not match this one. The guitars sound really great, but most of the songs are plodding...
would love to see them live
I had the privilege of seeing Son Volt play live - so good! I have upped my rating based on their live performance. 128K played softly in a work environment just doesn't do this band justice...

Guitar reminds me of Neil, but not the voice. No one sounds like Neil singing, and that may be a good thing.

would give it a lower rating if it wasn't about hitting 70 and doin' the crosscountry thing (which changes your whole perspective about everything)
Headache inducing.
Reminds me of the Longriders, nice!
i prefer the work of jeff tweedy who shared the lime light with son volt's jay farrar in uncle tupelo and then moved on to form his own band wilco. tweedy has a much more bearable and humble voice, and i think his work is more cleaver.
