this is definitely a downer but at least she's breaking out of her formula.
I think this is a nice version of this song...but not for the radio, unless its late at night. I love Heather's version and Sara Brightman's version as well.

Welcome to the music of Sarah McLachlan.
I actually usually don't like her stuff, but this is not bad at all. She breaks out of that box she always seems to sing and play piano in.

I'll grant that it is overflowing with emotion. But that's exactly what I admire in this track. It's not the most cheerful of songs.

I really dig Sarah, especially for her live sets. Its sad that her later music, like much of those that were involved in her Lilith project, strove toward the Industry's so-called 'next level', quite literally a deal with an extremely attractive devil.
Her work, there after, rung as manufactured, processed, or otherwise polished. It is becoming increasingly evident to me as I age with my musical tastes, authenticity is quality much treasured by artists but impossible to fake.

This shows off Sarah's vocal talents really well. She puts in so much emotion. This was recorded early in her career. (1991 or thereabouts.)
I remember her playing this song at a solo acoustic set in Paradiso, Amsterdam on May 2, 1999. (Incidentally also my 24th birthday.) She told us that she hadn't played her next song for a long time. I let out a cry of excitement when I found out it was Gloomy Sunday. It was magical! Just her guitar and her voice, live and unprocessed. It's hard to express what it did to me. It took me to a higher state of existence.
Even though I find Sarah's later work (Surfacing, Afterglow) to be bland and boring, I'll always love her for that acoustic set. It lasted for only 30 minutes or so, but it'll remain burned in my mind forever.
