Good view Steve, their bass player is doing something cool to the beat, following a bit maybe, that gives the music a distinct jazz feel. It reminds me of David Margen whom played on Santana's (dare I say) "post-acid-influenced" albums like Inner Secrets, which IMHO is an underappreciated jewel.

love this tune!
I think this is the first PT track I ever heard. I heard the Floyd homage or reference right away. I was less impressed with the music than the production and the attempt to make something new out of the passe. I'm less impressed now, but I leave it a loyal 8 because subsequent PT tracks — like Arriving Somewhere But Not Here and Dark Matter — are smoking hot.

So I reckon we give Scott a big generous blank cheque to trash Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson whenever he sees fit.

Attention PT fans (and I'm a BIG one). Do yourself a favor. If you can't see one of their shows, pick up the DVD's of their live performances on Anesthetize and Arriving Somewhere. Watching and experiencing this band perform live is another level you aren't getting by just listening to their music. Steven Wilson and the entire band are soooo excellent live. I have to break out these DVD's regularly. Listening to a CD just isn't the same as seeing them perform.

That's not what is bothering Scott from out west. Not by a long shot. He's just super incensed that his government would hide sensitive, critical information from him. I have to agree... Bill, you play some really excellent, obscure stuff. But then when we fall in love with it, and really want to have it for our own, it's impossible to get (or costs a fortune).

FYI. Normal from the Nil Recurring EP is up for peer review on the LRC (Listener Review Channel). It is a more industrial, metal-sounding version of Sentimental from the Fear of a Blank Planet LP.
And an even better piece IMO. It is a great piece of music with once again, lyrics that address contemporary, critical social issues. Go vote!
I cannot imagine Bill playing it in heavy rotation but the odd play would be pleasant.
