I'd say Pentangle were definitely a bit folky/jazzy - along the same lines as Mark Almond (not that one) and Tim Buckley perhaps.

Why does jazz sound to me like somebody (even a child) randomly hitting notes?

I listen to early jazz and it takes more concentration, Classical even more if you haven't been exposed to it. I like them both to expand my thought process and let my mind drift. There is great value in complex music above 2/4 and 4/4 time and 3 minute songs.

Sometimes music needs to be taken in context. It's a reflection of the time, but still shows remarkable musical ability and feeling. For those who heard it long ago, it brings back sweet memories. Thanks for playing this. Rating it 8, because it really wasn't their best work, but is still right up there.

This was already a 1, then some twat screamed "yee-hee" in my right ear which bloody hurt. This is just the sort of sophisto-jazz that my Dad would have liked back in the baroque 70s, but boy, does it sound dated, indulgent and frankly pointless 3 decades later. 1's too good for it.

I think Bert Jansch was in this band at one point.

Danny Thompson on upright. He and Terry Cox on drums were the perfect complement to Jansch and Renbourn. Awesome band.
Edit: Sorry. Didn't mean to omit Jacqui McShee's vocals. She's not on this cut. Doh.

The Yeee-heeee! makes it.
Bill's on a serious roll today. Elephant -> Traffic -> and now this. Nice long 1/2 hour's worth of sweet mellow riffs to end a hectic week. :)

Always loved Pentangle and this was the first album of theirs that I ever heard. Used to play it on my radio show at the mighty KUCR (10 watts of full-throated radio power - I kid you not) in southern California.

This was my most loved album for several years when it first came out. How nice to hear a bit of it again.

A little navel-gazey sometimes, but somehow I seem to enjoy each individual moment.
I like this whole album - hard to believe this is from 1968! I have one of their other songs languishing on the LRC thats been there several months...

That seemed a rather timeless piece to me. The bass solo in particular got my attention. Nice.

Tasty
Does this predate Tommy? Some of that acoustic pickin' sounds a lot like a main melodic part of 'Overture', that repeats throughout all of Tommy. Anyone know?
I LOVE Pentangle, but this is one of my least favourite tracks. It's all style (and "virtuosity") without enough melody. They produced so many great tracks where the balance was much more enjoyable - please can we hjave more of those in the future?

bumping 3 > 4 today
Holy cow! Pentangle! Now there's a blast from the past. I guess they DO get played on the radio every 40 years or so...
Traffic > Pentangle, righteous seque!

Two heroes from my accoustic guitar toting days!
I was one of those who took the guitar everywhere, and ended up playing the folk clubs professionally in Scotland back in 1971.
Eee! them were't days!

Thank you for bringing this into the mix....!!!
on the local npr station here in sf...they spent about an hour talking with john renbourn. i'm not a huge fan of folk...but, this interview and hearing what they were up to back then and what he's been up to since was really fascinating. thanks for putting this on!
wow, had forgot all about this group, remember hearing them in college. but don't recall them being a jazz artist. good stuff
Love me some Jansch & Renbourn guitar playing!
FINALLY, I hear THEM on my favourite radio station ever!!! Took a lot of hours of listening. But it's never too late.

Wasn't this originally called "Jazz Odyssey"? I remember hearing this way back, in an amphitheater at a California amusement park. Kind of a "free-form jazz improvisation".
Nigel Tufnel observed, "Jazz is just a series of mistakes without the "oops".
Pentangle! Tonight I'm breaking out the vinyl and going thru "Pentangling"- Superb, Bill!
that scream was awful!
Boring.
and by "base" you must mean "bass"?

Actually, I'm hearing 6/8, which is counted, and danced, in two. I think I heard it drop to 4/4 for a while as well. Calling any song with a '3' feel to it a waltz is common, but (imho) wrong.
Oh, Boy. Does this take me back. Very sweet!

Unmistakably Danny Thompson...
Interesting. I give it a "pretty good." But I count 4 beats per measure (more or less). Isn't a waltz 3/4 time? I need to hear it again.
just got hooked up here. how is rest of this cd?
WTF?!!!!!!! but i like it!!!
More, please.
One of my favourites.
Nice balance between guitars, drums and bass (Denny Thompson
later played with John Martyn and Richard Thompson).
Add song (Jacke McShee) to this and you get "I've got a feeling"
or "Rain and snow". I would upload those, but right now these
are stricktly vinyl.
Nice'n quirky.
About as "eclectic" as it gets! Thanks!
This runs off in every direction!!
I love it!!!
