I used to think most jazz was just random noodling, but as I've become more educated I can begin to tell the difference between meh and wow.
Jazz as an art is quite ineffective if you don't recognize the underlying tune they are riffing off of. Then it's simply boring IMO

Just listen to his work on Kind of Blue.
He and Coltrane were trading/sparing rifts on that whole album.
And Miles was sitting back and letting it happen.

What a smooth weaving of styles between Adderley and Davis. This works.

Both Adderley and Davis produced much better than this poor example of their collaboration (or Miles' many other partners) , imo.

Just sat down for a second from my busy day and wow, what a thrash of negative comments to jazz or those expressing themselves on how they feel about jazz! I listen to Radio Paradise because I like a VARIETY of music. I hope to tune in each time to hear familiar sounds and new ones. I think it is good that people express what they like or dislike yet I would hope that people can try to be respectful and polite in doing so. We are all tuning in, radio family you could say, so lets hear one another and express what we want without trying to friggin personally attack others.

For those who preach the eclectic thing: I am all in favor of that, more than you'll ever know. It's a little rude to presume that just because someone doesn't like Jazz, then they are close-minded. I have tried many times, but I have never connected to a Jazz piece. Besides, this station is not all that eclectic. There is no Rap, for instance. I don't buy, not in a million years, the notion that all rap is bad and does not deserve air time. I just think the RP community (myself included) does not care much for rap. Maybe Jazz should be treated like Rap. (wishful thinking)

That is an honest and perceptive statement, unlike some of the others in this thread. I happen to like jazz, particularly from this era, but I know a lot of people who dislike it and I do not consider them to be close-minded. I think I began to enjoy jazz more as I learned about things like theory, scales, & modes while learning to play music. Often, it seems that musicians are the primary audience for jazz, since there can be a "technical" appreciation, but that too, is an over-simplification and is frequently not true anyhow.

Is this classified as Bebop, Hard bop, Cool jazz or free jazz? 9 thumbs up
Hate this stuff. It's just un-melodic noise. Bunch of screeching horns. The best part is when it's over.
I note that the Jazz Bill plays is mostly pretty accessible (no late-period Coltrane, thankyouverymuch), and that every Jazz cut I've seem him spin anyway has rated a 7 or higher avg from RP listeners. I love it. Dig.
And I for one would like to hear more (intentful) rap on RP. Lots of good stuff coming from just down the hill of Paradise...East Bay, Davis, and Sac.

I was working a contract job in Raleigh, NC, a few years back, and decided to stop in a local music store while up there to see if I could find any deals. I came across this CD, and decided to pick it up on a whim; I had been meaning to try to expand my knowledge of jazz somewhat, and I had heard of all of the guys on the CD, so I decided to pick it up. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised. Good release by some extremely talented musicians.
The best part? The CD was around $4.

Personally, I listen to RP because of the range of music you get here. It won't hurt anyone to step out a bit and give it a listen. It's too easy to get your tastes narrow - witness all the "Classic Rock" stations with a 25-song playlist. You keep doing it like this, Bill.

Eclectic- composed of elements selected from a wide range of styles, ideas, or sources.
Guys, there have to be a million internet radio stations. A bunch of us found an online musical home here.
We like our classic rock, our blues, our alt. country, our light classics, our new wave, our world music, our techno, our folk, and we like our jazz.
It ain't for everyone, and we don't want everyone to like the same things we do. That's part of socialization, and it's why Baskin-Robbins has more than 1 flavor. We don't all like the same things.
Don't go away mad, now...

There are elements of the structure that irk as well, but I can't put my finger on it. The blues dulled these concerns and replaced the sax with the much-more listenable electric guitar (as the most common standard lead instruments).
It's interesting folks find Jazz torture when most rock is derived from either blues or jazz. You are listening to the root of music. I mean, Pink Floyd is the combo of the name of two blues guys, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. To think that Pink Floyd is simply a derivation of blues, wow, what an oblique angle they went to from where they started, which is exactly what Jazz is, an oblique angle of music. Is it maybe that folks simply get one angle but not others?

Absolutely agree! me, myself and I love all types of music, weaned on jazz and classical then progressively opened up to all types, forms, cultures from there. Just love music! And I love this!

One of the greatest virtues of RP is it's range of musical styles. Sometimes it extends our individual range of appreciation. If everyone liked all the same things, what a boring world it would be. If this doesn't move you, there is always the mute button, or God forbid, Clear Channel Radio.
I usually pull the headphones off, take a trip to the sandbox, get another cup of coffee, check the fax, answer the phone and put the headphones back on and oh, shit this is still on?
For me, the thing that makes sophisto-jazz so tedious is that every blasted instrument has to be given its own solo, so for a quintet that multiplies the 'song' length by 5. This one is no exception, and for me outstays what little welcome it had in the first place.
And no, I don't 'get' jazz. I had enough sophisto-jazz inflicted on me by my Dad, who wet himself over technical virtuousity, during childhood to last a heap of lifetimes. The longer this goes on, the greater my pleasure will be when it finally ends.
Frank Zappa followed by Cannonball and Miles; hey Bill: these guys are smiling down on you big time! Here too

I like jazz, to a point. Beyond that point, I hate it. Where's that point? Right were technical virtuosity becomes more the focus than melody, that's where. Quite a ways back there behind these guys. . . .
If you believe that the presence of melody is the end-all, the centerpiece of what makes great music, I'm afraid jazz just isn't your bag.

Re: some comments below. Miles, like martinis, is an acquired taste. I've tried for years to "get" him because I thought that I should. I've given up. He's too advanced for my year. Music should be enjoyable, if you don't enjoy it don't pretend to. If you feel like you don't enjoy Miles don't fret, you're not a bad person. He is in his own world...I feel the same about Coltrane and Parker too.
I love jazz...and martinis.
I saw Miles play at Alexander Hall at Princeton in 1973, and it was amazing. He never faced the audience. I walked out high as a kite, purely due to the music. Just amazing. I will NEVER forget it. Or him.

I'm that way with opera. I know that there is a lot of good opera, written by fantastically good composers. I have friends that love it. Doesn't matter. I can't make myself like it, no matter what.
For me its Steely Dan. ;)
Miles Davis rocks my world!!

This is torture. I wish I knew how to derive pleasure from this. I really do. It makes me want to hurt something.
Someone I know feels exactly the same way about Middle Eastern music (which I like). It incites feelings of desperate violence in him. I didn't understand what he meant, until I realized that I felt exactly the same way when certain styles of jazz were being played. I feel as if I would do anything to make it stop.
Do we all have that musical Achilles heel? Does everyone have a particular style of music that they absolutely cannot listen to? I wonder. And I wonder why.

Cannonball has always been a favorite. Something about him is so "listenable", as opposed to some of his peers.
Right to 10!
I Agree!!
