My stepdad was a jazz fanatic. Being a rock guy, I listened to some of his records and nothing much clicked until the Ramsey Lewis record and specifically this song. Great arrangement!

I was lucky enough to see Ramsey Lewis open for Dave Brubeck at the Paramount in Austin. Mr. Lewis killed it - so much so we demanded an encore, from the opening act! Mr. Brubeck was okay too... kidding.

I'm not old enough either (born ca. '70), but I'm sure our high school jazz band must have played it! Our band director put himself through college play piano bars.

Oh, and since he wouldn't this tuba player double up on the bass part, I was the band's groupie! I humped amps and pianos all over the state, even getting out of school for contests!!!

Maybe further down the comments there's talk about how this sounds like "Smoke on the Water" - which makes more sense to me than "Grapevine" - I'm not a big fan of this song so maybe I just now heard it for the first time....anyone else here that?  about 1/2 into the tune....

Because both songs have only two chords in the the expository section, I-IV. I hear it, too. It's the extended repetition I think that elicits the comparison.

i'm old enough to remember when the Ramsey Lewis Trio were first killing it in the 60's.  It was a weird time, where the old school rock and rollers were being forced out by the British Invasion and the advent of psychedelic music.  Through it all, folks like Lewis and Booker T were cutting across all the lines, generating toe taps and outright butt boogies in chairs throughout the world.  It was a good time to be discovering music.  Sadly, greats like Miles Davis and other jazz musicians lost out.  only a small clique followed them in the major record buying crowd.  The resurgence of popularity in jazz shows that even 50+ years later good music is still good music.

I can think of at least four different meanings - time is short, measure the speed of flies, flies involved in time travel, Time flies, and many more can be constructed (see Wikipedia).
