Yo!  I said Yo!!
My stepdad was a jazz fanatic. Being a rock guy, I listened to some of his records and nothing much clicked until the Ramsey Lewis record and specifically this song. Great arrangement!
Bill does absolutely amazing seques and themes!   Heard reference to Wade on the Water in a previous piece (Billie Eilish?) and  musical links lead us back here.  Awesome.
Released in 1966.
Ah, a most excellent toe tapper. Great music!

The beginning of this tune is the jingle to a long running German radio program (WDR 2, Berichte von heute) summarizing the news and political commentaries of the day my parents used to hear daily. Since it was summarizing the day it ran pretty late (11:30pm). When I heard this jingle as a kid, it meant I was staying up late. Still associate that with this music. Great to hear that again here on RP!!!

Similar here. But the NDR didn't play it as late IIRC.

Made mine dance too and I don't even have a cat...
I was lucky enough to see Ramsey Lewis open for Dave Brubeck at the Paramount in Austin. Mr. Lewis killed it - so much so we demanded an encore, from the opening act! Mr. Brubeck was okay too... kidding.

Maybe further down the comments there's talk about how this sounds like "Smoke on the Water" - which makes more sense to me than "Grapevine" - I'm not a big fan of this song so maybe I just now heard it for the first time....anyone else here that?  about 1/2 into the tune....

Long Live RP!!

yes, a classic old spiritual, many renditions, I love them all.  Check out Eva Cassidy's - sadly she is no longer with us, but a very talented artist, worthy of RP !

I'm not old enough either (born ca. '70), but I'm sure our high school jazz band must have played it! Our band director put himself through college play piano bars.

Oh, and since he wouldn't this tuba player double up on the bass part, I was the band's groupie! I humped amps and pianos all over the state, even getting out of school for contests!!!

..perfect beat!

Just for the record (no pun intended) this is a very old spiritual song that predates Grapevine by 60+ years. No surprise the melody found it's way into early 60's Motown music.

It's about time I made this a NINE imho.

Because both songs have only two chords in the the expository section, I-IV. I hear it, too. It's the extended repetition I think that elicits the comparison.
Chair dancing!
i'm old enough to remember when the Ramsey Lewis Trio were first killing it in the 60's.  It was a weird time, where the old school rock and rollers were being forced out by the British Invasion and the advent of psychedelic music.  Through it all, folks like Lewis and Booker T were cutting across all the lines, generating toe taps and outright butt boogies in chairs throughout the world.  It was a good time to be discovering music.  Sadly, greats like Miles Davis and other jazz musicians lost out.  only a small clique followed them in the major record buying crowd.  The resurgence of popularity in jazz shows that even 50+ years later good music is still good music.

Personally, I prefer this one, though it's not quite as on-topic for a music station.

  Well, I can only wish.... This came on right after a huge conflagration between me and my brother. Neither of us won. I needed something that would reinstate my positive groove, and this did it. I wish Dave Brubeck's "Take 5" was next, but alas, a new set, a new groove.

First my feet and then whole damn body starts movin to the beat - totally involuntary...thanks Bill woke my dead butt up! {#Bananajam}{#Drummer}{#Bananapiano}
Although I am not moving this up from an 8 to a 9.... I am relabeling it "pretty awesome".

Never...do I tire of RLT's take on this song

As popular as this is with us listeners, I'm surprised that this is the only Ramsey Lewis in the RP library.

Thank goodness, I'm already a believer. Ramsey Lewis Trio is just beyond great. I'm doing that silly "desk-dance" that people do when they're at a computer - moving my shoulders, shifting in my seat as much as I can, feet tapping... I know I look like the world's biggest dork, but with this music, I don't even give a whooping funt. {#Dancingbanana_2}

God, this is SWEET!!!!! MMMMMMYeah!!!!!!!!!
Perfectly timed: I just came back from camping and water-hiking; I'll put this on my iPod for the next river hike!
Ohhhh - puttin' on my dancin' shoes now.  Lovelovelove this song!  Ramsey Lewis is rather magical....{#Dancingbanana}

Harvey "The Snake" Mandel next?  Guess not, I've got it backwards - HE covered THIS, not the other way round.....

Excellent!

{#Dancingbanana}
Fun. And only on RP. This makes me want to donate. Note because I'm a huge fan of the song. But because Bill has cajones to vary his playlist to such a fun, vocal, unruly crowd of listeners as us all.

Wow. That must have been some show. Pretty sure there's a lot of mutual admiration between Lewis and Brubeck, a couple of pros.

Great to hear, and nice segue from Stevie Wonder"s Don't You Worry About a Thing.

Moi Oci on the left-most hand clap track ... well, OK, you may genuflect to my hands, have your peeps call my peeps, OK?
This is awesome... Serious chairboppin. I hear a lot of Les Mccann in it.
Some Ramsey better than none. Funky pianer blues the way to go, and that Young-Holt rhythm section literally can't be beat.
Clap your hands - and swivel that chair around from side to side. (that's what I'm doing. clapping very quietly)
Reminds me of my son's high school jazz band. A little better, perhaps.
The intersection of modern jazz and tent-meetin' Gospel!
Very cool how this has the same sound and groove as "The In Crowd", but with a different melody.
Good grief. Is this song really 5 hours long, or does it just feel like it?

Not heard this..nor of Ramsey...until now, and already a fan!
I just subconsciously jumped out of my office chair and started dancing in place at my desk. Is that a bad thing?
