It's not far, I can walk
Down the block to Table Talk
I close my eyes
And make the pies all day

Plastic cap on my hair
I used to mind, now I don't care
I used to mind, now I don't care
'Cause I'm grey

Did I show you this picture of my nephew
Taken at his big birthday surprise
At my sister's house last Sunday
This is Monday and I'm making pies

I'm making pies, making pies

Thursday nights I go and type
Down to the church for Father Mike
It gets me out
And he ain't hard to like at all

Jesus stares at me in my chair
With his big blue eyes and his honey brown hair
He's looking at me
From way up there on the wall

Did I show you this picture of my sweetheart
Taken of us before the war?
Of the Greek and his Italian girl
One Sunday at the shore

We tied our ribbons to the fire escape
They were taken by the birds
Who flew home to the country
As the bombs rained on the world

Five a.m., here I am
Walking the block to Table Talk
You could cry or die
Or just make pies all day

I'm making pies, making pies
I'm making pies, making pies

Loved this one!!
Gorgeous and heartbreaking.
You could cry, or die, or just make pies all day.
I'm making pies.

I think most of us end up making pies, eventually.  It's really just a lovely song.

I'm pretty sure she grew up in New England and if you grew up in New England at that time "Table Talk" pies were in most grocery stores.  I frankly couldn't believe they still existed (your link).
Patty is a national treasure.

Good stuff.  Sure captures what it must have been like to live in tough times, WWII in this case?

No kidding.  Same here.....

Man, she can draw pictures with her songwriting....and it's about WWII........amazing........
My favorite of Patty's. . . which is a difficult choice to make! She is a goddess.
This song goes well with 'Chopping Broccoli' by Dana Carvey.
I love Patti. That is all.
... Reminds me of the movie Waitress
The vocals at the end of this song just floor me every time I hear it.

If I'm not mistaken she's actually talking about pizzas. That was funny though.

Since Patti's a local I've heard this quite a bit already. First time I heard it I kind of said 'so what, she makes pies, big deal.' But the melancholy of it is crushing. In a good way. I get an image of all the people who're just going through the motions, their lives set into a robotic routine. And the lives they might have had: the picture of her sweetheart, the child's birthday. Overwhelming. c.
Nicely put.
When I see her name pop up, I'm always curious to hear what, and how, she'll sing. I'm unfamiliar with her music. "Little God" is an amazing song; it stops me everytime I hear it. This one about the pies is rich and complex. I found myself pausing to hear it and move into it. I look forward to happening upon it again. Glad to be introduced to this artist. Thanks.
