Tiny pieces come to me every day
Still I wait
Things are falling into place
But so much time goes to waste

I stretch and shift
These parts won't fit
I can chop and change all I like
Rearranging this won't make it right

All doors are open.
All the doors are open.

Yeahhh...
I made myself gasp earlier when I was remarking to a coworker I've been a big fan of RP for . . . twenty years now.
Good song, but when it started I had a moment thinking :"YES "they're playing Bela Lugosi's Dead, from the Bauhaus album"...

Is that ever even played on here? I find it excellent.
I would love to give that opening groove to Medeski, Martin & Wood and see what they do with it.  I'm not sure layering on conventional pop sounding lyrics and brass horn samples was the way to go.

Fantastic clarity of recording on this - breathing space for each instrument to be heard. Not sure of the technical term but you can hear every note on a good stereo system. Especially the bass which is often muffled but on this track it is a clear as you are standing beside the bass player.

...not to mention it's a great groove.  He's a fine composer.
Great bass!
Did anyone else get Bauhaus vibes from the intro?
Beautiful bass, very nice song.
Ya gotta love the percussion,
I love this whole albrum.
Big tune, bless
I think Bill should play this every day till he gets it out of his system.

It is well produced. There is a tendency these days to compress and fill the sound space to maximum the average volume to make a song 'stand out'.  This one is very sparse. Judicious use of echo and reverb. So good.

Yep, at low volume I always fall for it.

With a comment like that, I would probably double that age. That would seem to fit.

Especially now with the FLAC option.  Many thanks Bill & Rebecca.
RP made me buy the vinyl.  This LP had tracks I never heard in real time
I really really want to like his music but just can't.  I appreciate his artistry but I want to move onto the next song.

Very cool how this song's intro began over the applause of the prior live song... my friend is even better than she raved... and oh how she raved, but I always assume women are being too dramatic about stuff.  This station, she should have jumped up and down about... plus who doesn't like women jumping up and down.  What was that show that had the start of hot chicks bouncing on a trampoline?  That was good stuff!

"Timbre" is a good word for that, I think.

He's actually quite good if you gave it a chance. Obviously you know "Somebody that I used to Know", so it's time to grow up and move on from top 40 radio and explore other songs on an album.
I'm a bit of a fan of this guy.  This is a great track, which brings back "Private Life" by the Pretenders and Grace Jones to my ears.
I like his work, even the signed artwork for the "album cover" is by him   cool man!
time keeps on slippin' slippin' slipping, in to the future.............

Is Gotye still a thing?
Stands the test of time for me, still love it.

" Gotye," is basically a kid named, " Walter," who recorded this album in his parents garage, and played every instrument himself.

I don't think he sold out at all.

My impression of how things shook down was that he just kept plugging away, doing what he thought made great songs, and finally the rest of the world was like "yeah, that is a great song", and he was like, "wait THAT one... you picked THAT one?  I almost threw that one away, it really wasn't my favorite." {#Stupid}

IMO any of the tracks Bill plays off of this album blow Somebody That I Used To Know right out of the water.  But hey, a good hook, and an angst break-up theme usually does well, so what do I know.

It sound more like the opening of "Murder by Numbers" by the Police. In fact, I'd bet my lunch that's where Gotye lifted the sample that makes up the primary drum beat for this track.
I have not heard this song in a while, nice. I always love the lyrics on this song, sounds like my/human life.
Could not have come after a more perfect song than Beautiful Way, and Way to go there, BillG in Paradise; how sly and masterful indeed...

. . . and it seems to have gone ballistic. . . well done Wally/Gotye. A splendid example of a musician working hard, believing in himself and reaping the rewards. Well deserved. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gotye
What this song needs to lift into the ether (I already gave it an 8) is more than one verse of lyrics. The repeating the same one multiple times just comes off as lazy.

(Pet peeve of mine. Other egregious examples are REM's "the one I love." and NIN's "Hurt".)
They will be on SNL next week.

For the first couple of seconds, I thought this was Don Henley's "Boys of Summer".  I almost panicked.  I am not at all disappointed that it wasn't was I thought it was.  :)

I agree! This is a wonderful album. Add it to the long list of "albums I purchased because of RP."

About iTunes—
iTunes UK must have different tracks than iTunes US. Sadly, there are not currently any free Gotye tracks on the US iTunes site. We have something called Jamey Johnson (Country - {#Eyes} ), Carrie Rodriguez (which iTunes listed as Folk but GraceNote listed as Country when I downloaded it, again ), and finally Monte Negro (Cancion de la Semana, Song of the Week, a moderately rocking little Spanish language song that I felt was the best of the lot). I'd give up all 3 and 3 random picks out of my iTunes library for one new Gotye song.

Ordered this from Gotye's website and then sat by my mailslot for the prescribed 12 postal days until it arrived.... right on time! Really groove to this song. Good album. Comes with a funky Ayers Rock stamp on the envelope

Dub is originally a Jamaican reggae style, a subcategory in reggae that started in the '60's, and the Clash and American or Brit reggae groups like UB40 got it from Jamaican reggae. Dub's characterized by some sound effects, drum effects, vocalizations similar to scat and rap, and lots of echo over a reggae drumbeat and sometimes much more reggae instrumentation. Used to be you'd hear a whole afternoon once a week of just dub reggae on your favorite public fm radio station.
Groovy chill! Love it! Thanks for the genre lesson as well. Too bad iTunes doesn't carry this artist.

Mine channels RP -- at least my "RP Favorites" playlist, which has 177 songs and counting, does. Most are discoveries from here, which is why I'm "Gr8ful4RP."
Good lounge song until he started singing...but I do love a few of his songs.
I wasn't a big fan of the rest of the album, the best songs are definitely "Puzzle With A Piece Missing" and "Heart's A Mess." This one is Thievery Corp.-ish, pretty good.

I was about to rebut Jelani's "Police rip-off" comment, but suddenly I'm hearing "Walking On The Moon."
Deathwish is the song I'm thinking of..... anyone else?
Ok, who's ripping off The Police?
Bill... THANKS! I'm so happy you let us discover new music all the time. There is so much stuff that fits my taste. Makes my days at work much more enjoyable . How do you find out about all these great artists?

After finding the link on the Gotye site and getting the album for about $14 us, this has become my new favorite. My vote for best album of '07.

Great song...great album...
The title of the song always loves to happen to me when puzzling w/ my daughter.
Bill, I'm starting to think you love this song as much as I do...
Before the horns come in echoing a long lost specials song, the first few notes have me preparing to hear a long lost michael stanley track. mind you these are simple observations, not complaints...
I'm really liking this song. 7 -> 8
