Self-hypnotized from holding still for hours
Drift out to sea, frozen
Forgetting how to move muscle
First I'm going to heat you up
And then I'm going to freeze you
So that you can think
Of all the ways you hurt me
Then, after thousands of years
If I'm in a good mood
I'll let you crawl out
Crawl out from your cave
I've given you everything I have
And you wasted it all
Now it's winter time
And you can suck on a hair ball
And chew on dry fish bones
Then, if I'm in a good mood
We can go for a walk
Roll down a grass hill
Soak our feet in the river
This morning's playlist:
7:38 am Peter Gabriel, "Not One Of Us"
7:43 am Rachid Taha, "Barra Barra"
7:48 am Dengue Fever, "Seeing Hands"
"Barra Barra" and this track have low ratings and draw a lot of negative comments because the lyrics are in foreign languages (Arabic and Khmer, respectively) and there seem to be a lot of listeners who don't care for anything in a different language. To put it another way, might these listeners be reacting to the fact that these are being sung by people who are "not one of us"?
Is that song sequence a subtle editorial comment on this by Bill G.? If it was, it's a good one.
Correct ! What kind of music do you expect from a " Global Mix " channel ?
I'm not sure of individual commenters positions, BUT America certainly is undergoing a Racist Renaissance these days. The h8 for the "other" is strong in the heartland.
I like this song in the mix as well and love the fact that the listener ratings do not seem to drive the playlist here on RP.
There's a contingent of RP listeners—late boomers and early Gen-Xers—who think William and Alanna should only play "their" music, aka the rock music fueled by LSD and cocaine from 1965-1983. And that's just dumb, because there's a wealth of amazing music out there to be explored and enjoyed.
This track is a masterpiece.
I am doubly pleased it is still being played regardless of the lowish rating and as a result I have sent some more money to RP.
Yes, this is a blatant bribe to keep the level of musical weirdness that occasionally permeates this splendid place alive.
I Agree!
Seeing them at Global Fest at Lincoln Center this month in NYC!

Cool! You Lucky Duck! I wish I could have been there too!

I would bet the original commenter is drawing on the old-school, traditional Korean vocals sometimes heard on M*A*S*H and in their mind hearing some weird amalgamation of that with rock music. "Race" doesn't need to be shoehorned into this discussion.
And you think this is funny because.....? You think all Asians look and sound the same? You've never seen a map before? Hint: Cambodia is not North Korea.
Especially as DF is reviving a musical style killed off by Communist Tyranny.
Strangest thing. Tuned in Radio Paradise and suddenly got switched to Radio Pyongyang.

Um, she's Khmer/Cambodian.

To my brain, it's like nails on a chalkboard. That being said, I'm not hitting PSD because it's only been played once in the last 30 and I'd rather stay on the Main Mix if I can help it.
So, I'll just play through.
Spot on, Willie.
that's almost as bad as getting Dengue Fever ... just sayin. Can be fixed with a poltice though
I recommend checking out more than this song alone.
It's gotta be all the Trump voters.
I hate Chump slightly more....
personally, i think it's lovely and the reason why I appreciate RP: diversity. thank you for keeping this one on rotation.
To answer your questions, no, no and no.
I think the low rating is attributable to one thing....it's just plain ANNOYING!

A mix of different languages and epochs is one of the key benefits of listening to RP over other radios/services.Before discovering RP I was always saying that I want to listen to more eg. rock, not important what country it comes from, and not to be stuck with english lyrics only.
Thanks RP :)

You are reading my mind. Both Rachid Taha and Dengue Fever are surprisingly underrated. And of course, Peter Gabriel is a genius.
HA!!! Funny. Truly sounds like Dung Fever.

Average rating 4.9 with a huge number of 1s. Personally I love both this track and the album, I also love being part of the minority who appreciate this song!
I think it's a cool tune, nice groove, good production. It doesn't matter that I can't understand a word of the lyrics (Khmer?). Different strokes for different folks obviously.

I would go <1 if at all possible
lasts a little long, and a little to repetitive, to my ears at least.
Secondly, I don't understand the dislike. I'm bumping this from 8->9 just because so many people hate it.
Yep. I've seen DF live twice in really small venues. There's no faking it in those situations, and these guys are really superb musicians, they're fun, and I literally sat down and talked with the bass player for 1/2 an hour after their show about music, travel, life.

Some lovely evocative images there CJ. Thanks for sharing those memories and your insightful comments.
If it aint coming from the USA...

This music has much improved since the legalization of the marajuana.....
Guitar work has shades of 'The End' from the Doors...
I wish I could see them live but they hardly ever travel to the east coast.

A definition of Eclectic is: Deriving ideas, style, or taste from a broad and diverse range of sources.
Clearly many of the posters think they have an eclectic taste in music but lack the necessary tolerance that it requires.
Spot on, Willie.
I also have some lame friends
oh, wait, sorry.
Dengue Fever.
See Lady Gaga
But this tune sounds agressive to me.

What is wrong with you RPers?
I agree. Much too high.
What is wrong with you RPers?
Yes, it is a tad quirky, but its a great track. . . I sincerely hope it is kept on the playlists as a reminder that everybody needs to keep their ears open to ALL kinds of funky music.
Solid 9!
Anesthesia-free dentistry the Dengue Fever way! Hang in there, Dustin!
I do believe you are right. I'm somewhat taken aback by the musical provincialism expressed here sometimes. On the other hand, you like what you like, and dislike what you dislike and I can understand how DF would irritate somebody. Personally, I love it.
