I'll make a sign that stirs a million eyes
Hold up my hand to be analysed
Echoes the pound of a crowd for miles around
Turn off the sound and those worry lines
I fear the world in black and white
My instincts fraught with compromise
My words are smeared in others rhymes
I lost my voice but kept my sight
I lift up my eyes my head is clear
I turn to the skies my head is clear
I look in your eyes my head is clear.
Hold up my hand to be analysed
Echoes the pound of a crowd for miles around
Turn off the sound and those worry lines
I fear the world in black and white
My instincts fraught with compromise
My words are smeared in others rhymes
I lost my voice but kept my sight
I lift up my eyes my head is clear
I turn to the skies my head is clear

The trumpet and the strings in this song are great.

Goddamn I'm tired. Y'all shut the fuck up. Can we not just enjoy music without the shit. Don't get me wrong, I get it. Just not tonight.....

The Black Lives Matter movement is about US police & governmental entities treating African Americans significantly worse than its Caucasian citizens. It is not trying to deal with gang violence. The only way it has anything to do with that is it could take away energy & focus that could be applied to preventing black-on-black homicides. Should we independently work to improve conditions and the underlying problems in communities of color? Absolutely, but you're conflating the two issues.
As for them fighting hard for criminals, it's kind of the point - anyone that is arrested or killed by a policeman is considered a criminal and BLM is rallying to have blacks treated the same way as whites at all stages of the process, not killed outright at much higher rates than whites, not given harsher prison sentences, not profiled more strongly based on their skin color, not physically handled more aggressively independent of other actions, etc. If they weren't criminals, they wouldn't be dealing with the police and would just be subject to regular, everyday racism.
And concerning whether trading the signs would result in a different expected answer, no, the answer to both signs would still be "No". The point is that neither person's life is worth more than the other, they have equal value. BLM and other black activists are not trying to claim that African Americans should be worth more, only that they are treated worse and therefore their lives seem to matter less or not at all.
White lives, for the most part, already matter. "Blue" lives have pretty much always mattered, they are just being asked to be more accountable for their actions. All lives should matter, but sadly too many, especially minorities, don't get the same respect.
If you wish to bloviate your whiny poor black man rant then take it to the comment section of whatever leftest source your regurgitating your false propaganda from. Do us all a favor. Leave RP and never return. As we the people are here to talk about what really matters . . . . . . the MUSIC!

Now have them trade places and signs. BLM might get more sympathy if they didn't fight hardest for criminals and ignore the massive numbers of black lives ended by other blacks.

And you will ask yourself...well....what the hell is this place and how do I get out of here?
The threads regarding this song are comical. How 'bout "it's a pretty good tune". Good job RP.

No Sir, don't like it!
every time this band comes on I find myself stopping what I'm doing at work to check and see who it is that's playing. very impressed with what I've heard so far! thanks RP.
I love Florida Tim's description of the trumpet...."sort of a slacker, alt hip>ie chic, panhandling trumpet player vibe"
It's hard to teach that brand of creative writing

That's an awesome point, otomi. Thinking about it some more, I realized that the chain metaphor is only applicable when the goal is perfection. When striving for perfection, if any element in the group attempting to achieve it fails, then the group effort fails, as a chain breaks if its weakest link does.
Perfection is rarely music's goal; rather, it's usually "better than before" or simply "different and interesting" .
Perfection in the process, or in the product? A perfect product can result from an imperfect process.

I'm a bit of a simpleton, but the chain only works for me when trying to drive a cog.

If one thinks about it, the chain metaphor (often used in corporate circles to brainwash employees) doesn't work very well when describing groups of human beings working toward a common goal. Almost any process is more complex than a chain and, needless to say, a human being is far more complex than a link in a chain. People can adapt to situations and work around problems, while chains merely break.

Not sure I understand. All this time I've been marveling at the tone and control of the player on this particular 'track'. I may be completely mistaken, but I think that this player did a good enough job on this song to not have to put up with this sort of ill informed criticism. I've played with enough trumpet and flugel players at professional and semi professional levels to know that what you're hearing here is not as easy as it must sound. I wish I could play with this sort of sensitivity.
FWIW, my favorite Oi Va Voi tune, by a long shot, because of the horn.
Let's call a spade a spade. The trumpet sucks. It should have been a highlight. You're only as strong as your weakest link.
How did this song leave the studio with such a bad track?
What were they thinking?
It could have been quite good.

the trumpet sounds like a sample from some old vinyl used to add texture, and it plays a pretty minimal part in the song overall...RP listeners protest too much, methinks.

Wait. Are you sure that the music coming out of my speakers is actually Oi Va Voi? Every other song I've ever heard from this band I've hated, hated.
Just read on AMG that this is KT Tunstall's old band. No idea. Like the sound of this a lot, Going to have to check them out.
Nice sound, but I agree with below poster that the trumpet sounded rather amateurish.
Saw them a couple of weeks ago in a one-off gig at the West London Synagogue. Believe me, you won't find a better venue - magical! Fabulous performance with the new singer Bridgette Amofah and violinist Anna Phoebe taking the group in a whole new direction - from Refugee to Yuri seems a lengthy journey, but the new tracks from the forthcoming album, Travelling The Face Of The Globe (released early next year) take them somewhere else completely. The best and most innovative and inventive group in Britain, bar none. I've got a couple of tracks from the new album, so I'll upload them to see what B&R think of them in the LRC before the album comes out.
Gosh, I like these guys, but that trumpet sounded like a bad audition for intermediate band.
These guys really cover a wide range of musical styles.
I had to stop working to see what this is. Very nice!
Thanks for turning me on to another great band RP!!
Definitely gonna seek these guys out.
