emancipated minor
well directed and brilliantly casted
riding a greyhound
down to the city
with her fake id
and a hell of a little hand-basket
little game of see-saw
and then he came to claim her
and then a sordid line
formed behind him
reproductive system
newly activated
she participated
in nature's plan
she participated
and i can't say i envy her
i don't think i miss it
wrought iron cobwebbing
over thin
window panes
the city seducing her
on tip-toe to kiss it
don't think twice
just roll the dice
roll the dice
so she attended the dance classes
and she learned the little dance
and she tried the high heels
but she couldn't bring herself to prance
all the while a faint ticking
in the silence between the songs
just south of her gut
two tiny time bombs
and love comes in many forms
and for each she would yearn
hungry as a student
hungry to learn
every flavor of person
every species of intent
with the body pulsing
at the center detent
but all the good graffiti
got painted over in time
and she watched the last faceless chain
replace the last five and dime
and she wondered if the only noble thing
ain't to just to get a big garden
and plant it in the spring
and kiss the city goodbye
in some big graceful gesture
and focus on the moon's groove
and groove with the moon
focus on the moon's groove
and groove with the moon
and i can't say i envy her
i don't think i miss it
wrought iron cobwebbing
over thin
window panes
the city seducing you
on tip-toe to kiss it

Borrows more than a bit of the bass line from The Pretenders - "My City Was Gone" off of the album Learning to Crawl.
Edit: Which Bill obviously noticed, since this song was played 2 songs after that one!
Heck, it's almost the same song, only this one is much, much worse.

I have mixed feelings about this song. The music is cool, though I don't like the chorus. And the way she says "minor" creeps me out. Sounds kind of lascivious to me. I don't think I'd trust her around my daughter.
From Ray Charles What'd I Say to THIS. I can honestly say this is the worst seque I've ever heard.

Agreed. This is the kind of stuff that makes my wife come downstairs and insist on a change. Then I have to listen to her favourite pop crap.
Oh, now I get it . . . Emancipation . . . Redemption . . . you know, just because they go together conceptually doesn't mean that you need to play them together. I would have been happy with Redemption without Emancipation.

My wife's never heard this song and she doesn't ever want to hear it again.
It does not bode well that this is the LEAST annoying Ani DiFranco song I've ever heard.
Pop rather than Funky

Must be a political thing....cause this one's not bad. 8.
Is she channeling Blondie?
Really like here song entitled "Recoil".....it really has heart and emotion along with a twangy acoustic, made appreciate her musicianship
Good stuff, Bill. I like Ani.
Bill's puttin' the ''fun'' back into funky
Imitiation Luscious Jackson. And yet I like it better than most of the rest of her stuff.

I thought some of the percussion in the latter part of the song was really good. This the third time I have heard this and it is growing on me.

Hey, an Ani DiFranco song that doesn't suck! I would never have given this a chance without Radio Paradise.

King of Leon followed by Ani DiFranco: Dull and Duller
I really don't like her music.

YES. Yes it does. Those sloppy strings are horrible! Ugh, it's like the kind of song I'd hear in a fever dream. And not in a good way.
Tries to be funky and misses by a wide margin.

Ani has always tried too hard to be 'edgy' and 'hip'. This song fails hard in both departments.

mute
Funky!
I never thought I'd be saying that about an Ani DiFranco song.
nada especial!
Not bad. Unlike her usual breathy, hypersyllabic, uber-esoteric stuff.

Yup! Very nice it is too!
Not in Franks' league by about a light year or two, tho'..........
The nice part about this song is that you can say "It sounds like Garbage" and everyone will agree with you no matter what.

That's what I thought, Debby Harry, same beat and music, some song with Cars in the title, though this song does NOT make me hot....

a nugget for the dance floor ! good stuff
Hmm. . .is this really Ani DiFranco? I'm not hearing 1000 words per measure, my normal DiFranco litmus test.

Fancy that! An Ani DiFranco song I don't actually hate.

I usually like Ani DiFranco a lot, but this one I don't care for. Go figure.

Mine is quite full and exciting and does not need the vapid fulfillment of being 'first' on some web forum. Continue on with your own listless quest for meaning here though. The rest of us have moved on.Reproductive system newly activated??
Either really edgy or really

Please take this album out back, and throw it in the dumpster before it can do any more damage.
