No one waving for me just the shoreline receding
Ticket in my hand, I'm thinking wish I didn't hand it in
'Cause who said sailing is fine?
Leaving behind all the faces that I might replace
If I tried on that long ride
Looking deep inside but I don't want to look so deep inside yet
Sit down, sit down on the prow to wave bye
There might not be another star further on the line
Look out, look out at each town that glides by
And there's another crowd to drown in crying eyes
And see how that light you love now just won't shine
Well, there might just be another star that's high and far in some other sky
We sing, ''"Is that marionette real enough yet
To step off of that set to decide what her hands might be doing?
Ruining the play, to in the ensuing melee escape."''
We packed up all of our bags
The ship's deck now sags from the weight of our tracks
As we pace beneath flags black and battered
Rattling our swords in service of some faded foreign lord
And we sail out on orders from him but we find
The maps he sent to us don't mention lost coastlines
Where nothing we've actually seen has been mapped or outlined
And we don't recognize the names upon these signs
And every night finds us rocking and rolling on waves wild and white
Well, we have lost our way, nobody's gonna say it outright
Just go la la la la la la la la la...
Oh, la la la la la la la la la la la...
Oh, oh, oh
La la la la la la
La la la la la
La la la la la la

Hey ortallcowgirl! You live in Globe, Arizona? That is just west of the Solitude Tailings pond right?
What kind of mine is that?
Lost Coastlines? Sounds like Lost Lyrics, as well.
With apologies to "Come On, Eileen" — another turgid, pub-closing song. Gag me.
La la la la la la.......
sometimes "la la la" strikes me as "la la lazy".
or maybe his muse suddenly developed Tourette's and that's the best we can get?
and repetitive.
La la la la la la.......
Isn't that a tautology? Can you think of any college band that hasn't been into the distillates?
No. And I don't want to listen of any of them, either.
Gorgeous. 8 => 9
What are you people complaining about? Huh!?!!
They are clueless
great stuff Bill. Stopped listening to RP when after a while I been recognizing the tunes (namely that really really long Decemberists song - what's it called? - no I have nothing against Decemberists - but that song is just really really... long) Happy to hear new stuff now!
That long Decemberists song is new. The CD, The Hazards of Love, came out the same month as this Okkervil River CD.

X-( what has been heard, cannot be unheard!

The drumming reminds me of Town Called Malice?
... and all the rest is from the beginning very annoying.
A 3, only to have the chance for a 2 and a 1 the next times.
blaaaaah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blaaaaah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blaaaaah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blaaaaah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blaaaaah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blaaaaah, blaaaaah.
is it over yet? just shoot me!
what really kills me is that RP played this song on:
Jan 9, 15, 16, 18, 20, 22, 30,
Feb 3, 11, 13, 16, 17, 19, 23 and then again today,
and the comments, 99 to 1 agree that listeners never want to hear it again.

MAANNNNN! Do you not have a life that you have soooo much free time that you can actually count how many times Bill plays a son AND actually keep a record of the dates??
OK, so what time on each day did it play and when it was playing was Bill on the web cam snapping his fingers in tune to the music?
Hmmmm?
is it over yet? just shoot me!

Bill likes it.
Bill just said he could do with about 60 seconds less of the la la la'ing.
I totally agree

Man, the vocal handoff on this diddy is boss. Those guys complement each other so freaking well.

oh, yeah.... barks of joy! (they don't know any better...)
... and maybe it should be called `overkill river`... ?! ~ it IS repetitive! yaaaaah!
i bet Arlo Guthrie could accommodate you there. and he'd have a blast doin it! plus he'd get the whole crowd to sing along ...
edit: i can see the Decemberists covering this.
fun friday stuff!

The voting histogram says that about 82% of listeners have no objections against hearing it again.

How do you find out which days a song is played on? I've been curious about that.
And you really can't go by the comments; only the most vocal are going to actually post anything. The rating seems to indicate that most people like this song.

Leave 'em alone, it's *incisive*. Perfectly encompasses the human condition and the bitter cruelty of man's inhumanity to man. Byron and Blake, eat yer hearts out.
Would that be the insipidness of innocence or the banality of evil?
Killing me . . .
At least change it up with a La Di Da

I liked this song but it doesn't survive repeated listens.
It'd be nice if we could rate things by the frequency it should be played.
3 = "Once a year / Not more"
I agree. I kinda like the la la's but appear to be the odd person out. hehe
I would love to hear a death metal version of this by a band named Overkkill River.
Sorry i hadn't got to the la's yet and given the length of it i accept it seems pretty freakin lazy.
3->2
THANK YOU!
I'm warming up to this song; the lyrics are most intriguing.
(This band is from Texas, eh? Cool.)
Packed and all eyes turned in, no one to see on the key.
No one waving for me just the shoreline receding.
Ticket in my hand and thinking wish I didn't hand it in.
Cause who said sailing is fine? leaving behind all the faces that
I might replace if I tried on that long ride,
looking deep inside but I don't want to look so deep inside yet.
(Meiburg)
Sit down, sit down on the proud wave bye,
there might not be another star, further on the line.
Look out, look out at each town that glides by,
and there's another crowd, to drown in crying eyes.
(Sheff)
And see how that light you love now just won't shine,
there might just be another star, that's high and far in some other sky.
We sing, is that marionette real enough yet to step off of that set to decide
what a dance might mean to it. Ruining the place where the ensuing may lay escape.
We packed up all of our bags the ship's deck now sags from the weight of our tracks
as we pace beneath flags black and battered rattling our swords in service of some fated, foreign, war.
(Meiburg)
And we sail out on orders from him but we find that the maps he sent to us don't mention lost coastlines.
Where nothing we've actually seen has been mapped or outlined
and we don't recognize the names upon these signs.

And every night finds us rocking and rolling on waves wild and wide,
well we have lost our way, nobody's gonna say it outright.
Just go la la la la la la la la la....
Arcade Fire, but wet
I like.
Compelling and original sounding.
I don't think I'd say original, I'm pretty sure I've heard that bassline like 50 times.
This merits the dancing banana even though it makes me sad not to be in Austin.
never thought of it, but yeah.
i like okkervil.
