A friend of mine grows his very own brambles
They twist all around him till he can't move
Beautiful, quivering, chivalrous shambles
What is my friend trying to prove?

The booze turns a tall, gentle boy to a terrible totem
And the kids gather 'round trying to see what's inside
I think when he's drinking he's drowning some riot
What is my friend trying to hide?

'Cause it's breaking my heart, it's breaking my heart
And it's breaking my heart to pour like the rain
Brother of mine don't run with those fuckers
When will my friend start singing again?

When will my friend start singing again?

''Ooh''
''Ooh''
''Ooh''
''Ooh''

Opposite thing for me. I couldn't quit listening to it! I rated this as the top CD of 2008. Excellent lyrics and great tunes from the start to the end.

Thanks to Bill for this gem.

same here.

It is hauntingly reminiscent of "The Lumberjack Song".
..everybody kneeds some Elbow in their lives..(rimshot?..thank you, folks..now i'm, ah, Heading outta here)..  :P

Opium den with light? You're proving you never visited one!

Songs means nothing to me at all!

The miserable tune and his miserable voice are making me miserable. 1.
Urrggggh.  Please, no!
Give.  Me.  A.  Break.
It's the "cascading-piano-over-mournful-singing-in-a-large-cavern" sound that gets me every time.
This tune has a heavy opium den feel to it. Please Bill, bring some light into the room?

I bought this CD and gave it several listens. I seem to be the only one here who thought the whole thing was completely forgettable.

Yep... 'fraid so, now go assume your position in the corner and don't forget the pointed hat!

this is hauntingly good. 8.
nice segue.
Interesting choice to play from SSK.  This is the definition of an "album track".  Oh well - Bill knows what he's doing!
Guy sings Flat of the Blade (track 6) on the new Massive Attack album. Nicely done too.
What's breakin' MY heart is when he reaches for those high notes on "my heart". Good song, though.
Are you SURE this isn't Monty Python?

Seems so. {#Think}

Bill's on a roll with this set, and it's starting to piss me off.  I'm really hungry and want to go to lunch, but I haven't been able to take the headphones off for about eight songs now.
Entire album great.  Even my 18 and 25 yr old sons like it-and they make it a practice to not like anything I listen to....

The whole CD is excellent.

Like so many of the best CDs, the first few listens leave you unsure, you put it to one side, try it again a while later, still don't quite get it, and then for some reason, one day it just clicks. Such CDs have the longest shelf life and I love this now after a very shaky start.

How true. The CDs that grab me right off are often the ones I come to dislike, while ones like this can grow on me and become my favs. Joni Mitchell's work was like that, where I tired of "Free Man in Paris" but grew to really like some of her less popular songs, like "Down to You." I concur with philnnz on this one.

I'm liking this band. It's moving up on my playlist.

Did anyone see that show?

These guys and Coldplay?!!
What a train wreck that must have been.

The whole CD is excellent.
gee I like this one

Thanks to Bill for this gem.

I'm with you!  RP has been the only place I've heard Elbow and what prompted me to purchase was the fact that every song played off this album has caused me to stop whatever I was doing to check who it is, because I liked it so much.  After the fifth song that had me doing that, I made the purchase and LOVE it.  Now my daughter noticed that the promotion for the fall season of House on Fox includes one of their tunes.  Oh boy.

{#Umbrella} I looove this album

I'm hearing Dave Matt singing.

I can't stop listening to it.

This whole album is a eulogy for their friend Bryan, and thus is a bit morose. This song especially is kind of a downer, but for me,  it's the best kind of downer.
Sounds like John Lennon in the background playing piano, with Peter Gabriel fronting on vocals

I'll forget this one pretty quickly.

um, I'm thinking it's just you. Thanks for asking.

...holy cow i love this song!..
I've never noticed before this song how similar this guy's voice is to Rob Dickinson from Catherine Wheel. Very similar to me, though. Does anyone else see this, too?

Is it just me, or are these guys a total bummer?

Same here... and the "Leaders of the Free World" CD, too.

This CD is excellent, and the "Leaders of the Free World" is very good.

I find these guys really interesting.  Would never have heard them if it weren't for RP.  Thanks, BillG!!!
So much better than the Alanis Morrissette wailing that was playing 2 songs ago.  Thank goodness for Elbow
RP got me to buy this CD. It is excellent...many gems.
The swelling electronic noise bothers me a bit more than his voice.

no he doesn't

but still it is great isn't it? like a niner or so...

My third straight < 6 rating for Elbow.  I dunno... it just doesn't sit right.  Like the mexican food that sits under the heat lamp for too long.

I think I would need a spike of heroin to truly enjoy this.

Bill,
I am really beginning to like this band.  Thus far, everything you've played off of this CD has been interesting to me.  Thanks for the introduction... {#Yes}
