Different thinking about youth and sexuality back then. Woody Allen released "Manhattan" in which the lead, a 42 year-old writer for TV (played by Woody) has a romantic relationship with a precocious 17 year-old (Mariel Hemingway). It was a huge hit and is regarded as one his best films. 

I was a teenager when "My Sharona" came out. My friends and I thought it was catchy but stupid and OTT--like a guy who's always making sexual references and comments. The Knack seemed obsessed with sex. 

In some ways, our society is a lot more sexualized now. The Internet made sexual references and content easily available. But we are a lot more aware and intolerant of sexual abuse and assaults.

Actually, no. Doug was engaged to Sharona. Even though they broke up, she took care of him while he was dying. 
Sharona is a successful real estate agent in Los Angeles.

One of the greatest  and most underrated  guitar solos of all time. 

This is a timeless classic. Not one one bad song on this album. All of it deriving from the muse that WAS Sharona.

I'll never be able to hear the Queen 'version' properly.  Ever since my sister told me that, because of it's fine acoustics,  Al used a women's bathroom in a dormitory at Cal Poly SLO to record the 'Yankovich version', my brain's sing-along lyric captions read "My Bologna".  This always prompts me to listen to "Another One Rides the Bus" and, maybe, run my entire Wierd Al playlist.

Listening to his music always makes me smile.  Grinning is always indicative of a mood upswing.  Music is a great catalyst for that kind of attitude shift.

When I was young and goofy, I used to do the same at parties. Back then hard rock and heavy metal were the "cool thing". There's nothing more satisfying to "shower" a pumped-up crowd with Shubert's "Ständchen", Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" or even Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata". :)

The way I remember it, The Knack took some heat even among my teen peers for panting an awful lot about sex in this and their other hits. But for some reason--maybe because the playing is so tight--this isn't a nostalgia piece.

I have one I titled "Restraining Order" with "Spoonful" and "It's Now or Never" and Blondie "Call Me" and "I Put a Spell on You" and "Barrel of a Gun" and "I Will Possess Your Heart" and Adele's "Hello" and many more (an unnervingly large number of songs) of romantic obsessions that go way beyond OK. And of course the Police "I'll Be Watching You."

Yep, it's hard to get through most of it, as I think it was mediocre AND annoying. But, the axe-attack is pretty good. Can't believe it hasn't been mentioned (was everyone else afraid to be too obvious?) but that solo sounds greatly influenced by "I Need a Lover" from then-Johnny Cougar, done in '78, just a year previous. (Interesting that Pat Benatar covered Cougar's tune, too, in 1979, and got much air play with it.)

Pure nostaligic '79 pop. It was the right place, right time situation...as an antidote to the end of the disco era. Not quite alternative, not quite punk...but a nice influence into this tune. I liked it then...love it now. Thanks, RP. 

A good example of being kind of "meh" when this song came on the radio then or now...but on RP it has a new, much deserved life!

Actually, this is an excellent example of overplay on the radio ruining a fun song with a phenomenal guitar jam.  I get it, some people hate it, but that doesn't automatically make it bad. Art, in whatever flavor or shape, is still art. And, this is one of my all time favorite songs, despite getting dumped by my first real love that year. Anything raunchy and wrong took the edge off! My Sharona and Good Girls Don't did it for me.

I feel sorry for the haters who didn't get The Knack.
