I think they're characters in a Monty Python movie.

At the opening cords, I thought it was Cracker; it's not, but equally as good.

Sad that this is happening more and more....

you know, I show up for the music, primarily, but the entertaining comments certainly don't hurt.

Yessir, I like it.
Sorry if it's not happy and upbeat enough for ya.

That's a pretty strange meta-criticism. So if the music is the dog's bollox then the boards will only have "this rocks!" comments? Pretty feckin' boring that would be.

Or you could maybe see 'off-topic' posts as a mark of the imagination and eclecticism and fun of the RP community. Or you could maybe not see such posts as 'off-topic' seeing as they're related to the band.

Can you not appreciate the sheer pain behind this song, the longing for a home that's been washed away?

well put, Fred
I saw the "whitecaps on Canal Street" firsthand, rode with an ambulance crew in the first days after the waters had receded just enough, the song does capture somewhat the absolute dejected awe of seeing your world swallowed by nature overnight.  This is indeed a powerful tune. Perhaps I'm biased.  Still, I like to think what you said about the RP community is on mark, we are an eclectic bunch.  Rock on, brother

Probably a reflection on Ororville, CA - just south of RP's home in Paradise.
Stay high and dry Bill and Rebecca!
They could use some of that rain in Fort Mac.

Excellent
Thought it was Phil Wandscher's guitar (Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter) at first.
I really like the sound/tone of the guitar on this recording....
If any RP listeners like the sound of this you may want to check out the Deep Dark Woods. Very similar.

Rabbi Phil, where do you hang out that you even hear of such bands? I take it you're not Orthodox.

A dreary, uninspiring waste of airtime, a perfect 'Ho Hum', and the hook line is lifted almost entirely from a Bob Dylan song. Highway 61 Revisited revisited!

Slightly but distinctly warped in all the right ways...kinda liked it from the first, and always dig it a little bit more with each listen...Bravo, RP!

Purely opinion only. Not motivated to offend. Sorry if I have.

While I feel the urge to apologize for criticizing the band name initially...I am then reminded that my opinion is mine to share and those who don't like it can explain how they feel and I will listen. I then think to myself sometimes that I've missed the initial opportunity to keep my mouth shut. I don't really dislike this band name nor Death Cab for Cutie...but I do think it's subjective and perhaps if I dealt a bit deeper as to why a band chose a said name...I'd appreciate it more. Then again...I don't have much time or energy to care...time to make some coffee and jump myself and a big bowl of fruit out the window while yelling obscenities in Hebrew...while blinking excessively in a manner in which someone might notice. Sigh...such a busy day.

I wonder if the band name is any kind of reference to Twin Peaks? Laura Palmer's father, who later turned out to be the diabolical (literally) Bob, was called Leland. Mind you, it could be a common name in parts of the US for all I know.

I think more likely it's a reference to this and they wouldn't be the first band to take their name from the song either.

Ha Ha Bill, smarty intro.  Not sure if a little wind and rain is worse than being swallowed whole by the earth!

Thanks for your thoughts all the same.

While I have not been in every part of the US by any stretch of the imagination, I can assure you that Leland has not been a common name in the US in the last 50 years at least.

Just got back from a biz trip to New Orleans, it was a fantastic venue. Been so inundated with media about the disaster, was still expecting to find the city on it's heels. Was not the case. If you are considering New Orleans for a convention or vacation, don't hesitate. (And no, I'm not on their Chamber of Commerce). {#Wink}

The Bonzos were far from serious about very much, and Death Cab... took their name from one of their tunes - but you knew that.  Apparently, the person who wrote the original post did not.
Are Porcupine Tree, Toad The Wet Sprocket, or The Cars any better names?

Bonzos! "Can a Blue Man Sing the Whites",  "Trouser Press"  Hilarious tunes....

Yeah, It's too bad they didn't write a CHEERFUL song about New Orleans flooding and the house washing away...what were they thinking?

You know it's bad when you need the Coldplay song that follows it to pick up the mood.
And I say that as a Coldplay fan.

This wouldn't be my favorite choice for a day with 95 derees, full sunshine, and everything growing in profusion.  But, if I had anti-depressants, I'd love it on a bleak, dark, fatal day.

And then, I'd wanna hear Katrina and the Waves doing "Walking on Sunshine." (I am fragile these days.)

Must be about a drummer that lost his girlfriend - homeless

This is very appropriate for Buenos Aires nowadays...

...very cool beginning...
One of my favorite songs
I don't know how this is manging to average a 6.2.  Very generous bunch of listeners.

Not that it's awful, it's just not that . . . memorable.

Nice!!
I've seen whitecaps on Canal Street in person...NOT fun.  Any song about N'awlins can't be all bad, though.

Yep, you're right about the organ. The Doors on quaaludes meet Tom Waits (as per p_j_b).

{#Lol} That's true. Austin's official slogan promotes the city as "The Live Music Capital of the World," a reference to its status as home to many musicians and music venues. - from Wikipedia.
