Maybe you'll recognize in time
Maybe one day you will discover
All the pain that lies behind
You and your unfortunate love

Somebody might be more
Unsuitable and strange
With eyes that offer everything
That are capable of danger

My mind turns over lies you told
Things said to your other lover
As sweet as they had been to me
You lay there telling them to each other

Now I stand outside the door
My head is filled phrases
Inside someone's calling out
Their voices rise in praises

Five small words
Don't you want me anymore?
Five small words
Well, who is keeping score?

Coward that you are
You would faithlessly implore
"Baby, please don't leave me
Why don't you believe me?"
Why did you deceive me?

Didn't take some shiny dagger
Tattooed fingers grip and hone
I walked under stone dark ladder
I heard your final loving moan

All your indiscretions are
So merciful and brief
Genteel poison sprinkled on
Your Spanish handkerchief

Five small words
Don't you want me anymore?
Five small words
Well, who is keeping score?

The coward that you are
You would faithlessly implore
"Baby, please don't leave me
Why don't you believe me?"
Why did you deceive me?

Maybe in time you'll want me more

can you imagine he takes a stage? He tried acting too can you imagine?

That's clearly not true, we just heard him singing.  You may not like it, which is fine (though it appears to be the case with an overly-large amount of what you've rated), but it's also not the same thing.

Can't sing - ? You can't hear? Dude, where you been?

When people say that artists like Elvis Costello, Neil Young and Bob Dylan can't sing, I always wonder whose dulcet tones they prefer.
Can't sing - ? You can't hear? Dude, where you been?

I can't understand the hate for Elvis Costello on an eclectic station.  Is it the weird time signatures?  The unconventional phrasing and melodies?  I just don't understand it.

he just cant sing!
<auto mute> .... time for PSD>>

Okay - so I just checked my I Pod, and I have 610 Elvis songs on it.

And I've seen him live 25 times.

So I'm not objective.

But c'mon, this is a good song. {#Biggrin}
Or maybe he can do an album with J.J Cale
We need to get somebody to really piss him off. He was so much better when he was angry.

Snooooooore...
Terrible. F.

Decent - Elvis is king - of the hook!

Wow - new Costello that speaks to the past and yet leads into the contemporary. . . liking this. . .

Never got the Elvis Costello love.  Oh well, I don't have to love everything RP plays.

Thank Goodness!  8 for me

There are some songs from this album that I can't really get into (yet) but this song surely deserves much better than a 5.

4.8 is so wrong for this song so I gave it a 9 and it jumped to 4.9 - Nice to know I can make a difference - Hey even the worst Elvis deserves at least a 5 or better.

First time I heard it I would have given it a low rating but held off for another listen or two.

A couple of plays later and it is 7 going on 8 for me. Its a grower! Elvis is in the building again!

an 8 from a pro choice, pro gay marriage, pro cannabis, separation of church and state Tea Party Republican. I am against spending tax money on entitlements for imagined or manufactured rights/needs of every kind regardless of race, creed, sexual orientation or political affiliation if that helps the stereotype.

If we can agree on music maybe we're not so different.

Thanks for the heads-up.  I gave it a 1 and bumped it back to a 4.8.  Glad to help.

Rubbish - so par for the course from this guy ...

I agree...I have tried for so long to like this wanker but...it just won't happen
6 for the song + 10 for the bass playing / 2 = 8!

Really nails that King of America sound!

There, all better.
This song's rating is a travesty.

It is not the best EC has done but it still is pretty good.

I absolutely cannot believe the low rating for this song!

Wow. The Elvis haters come out in force these days. Sounds good to me, could go up, 7 for now.

Edit: Are you kidding me? In the time it took me to write that, the rating went from 5.1 to 3.7 3.5!

{#High-five} I blame the Tea Party! {#Lol} This is a fine tune from a stellar album. In fact, imo, at age 56, EC has produced one of the finest albums of his long career. He's back with T Bone Burnett for this release, but I think this one's much better than the previous Secret, Profane and Sugarcane.
