But old scars force you down in defensive pose
Dark, blue skies always tumbling over you
Connect all disparate dots and label them as true
You're straying off point
Through a fixed kaleidoscopic view
Narrowing the field
Without adding anything new
Intuitive stories aren't easy to unlearn
Only collective peaks remain
Dark, blue skies always tumbling over you
Just repeat old fables until they feel brand new
You're straying off point
Through a fixed kaleidoscopic view
Narrowing the field
Without adding anything new
You're straying off point
And preferring to live a lie narrowing the field
Regress and self-amplify
With nothing new
In boat, with a goat, in the rain, on a train
Absolut
"For Gonzalez’s distinctive vocals, he uses tube distortion while recording. "
"With Junip, I had the opportunity to learn how to produce – and experiment in the studio with more instruments than only the acoustic guitar. I’ve been mixing quite a lot, even though we got help with the final mixes. Yeah, I feel like I’ve learned some production and also how to build songs through harmonies and melodies."
" When we have recorded everything digitally in our studio, we take it to his studio and transfer it to tape machines and mix it all in analog there."
"Recorded largely in Gonzalez’s own kitchen, Vestiges & Claws..."
"Did you choose the kitchen specifically because it was the best room acoustically? Not really."
So Jose likes the lo-fi and learning the production side...that's his artistic choice. But i wish he wouldn't practice on his albums, because his voice and playing is amazing and deserves to be captured with every literal bit of clarity. Let a competent engineer manage the tracking in a real studio, instead of releasing demos. $3000 mics but recording in a kitchen might be a process, but the result is sounds like AM radio. His art and our ears deserve better.
Also, if you are the type to argue "film grain" is the director's intent! Just don't. Half the album reviews mention the audio issues, which is a serious distraction from the music.
Unfortunately, it is unlikely to change:
"José González: Let's talk about Don , the producer. I've known him since we were 12. We grew up in the same small city, Vänersborg. We were into skateboarding. He had this big rehearsal space and he started to build his own guitar. That is really typical for him. Don't trust anybody making other guitars. He wants to make it perfect in his own way. That is really significant for how he works and what he thinks—but he can also be really open-minded.
Tobias Winterkorn: Don has an idea of what's right and what's wrong in many areas, not only music. He's been saying if he had an island, how he would run it and what would be the rules for that island. He's basically been our mentor.
José: Absolutely. He has his own mixing and recording studio. When we record, we have our rehearsal place and he comes to us and we discuss the songs. He tells us what he likes and what he doesn't like. Of course, what he likes is most important.
Yeah, what's up with that? Seems painfully obvious, and this isn't the only Junip tune with this problem.
I guess i should feel blessed to have forgiving ears and cheap desktop speakers... this sounds great to me. Love almost everything I've heard by Mr. Gonzales(z?) and Junip.

I thought it sounded like "Joss Gone za les" (as Suri would have it).... Seems there could be reason for that.
