I'm always mesmerized by Richard Thompson. His ballads tell an engaging story, with interesting turns of phrase, with wonderful finger picking. I guess looking by the ratings distribution that you are either into that - or not.

Technically excellent but his silly vocal affectation wrecks it.

I guess you have to be in the mood for it...

Yes, you hit on it. There's folk ... and there's 16th century minstrel weirdness. Just my take, don't hate me.
I just can't get into it. There is some quality in his voice and delivery that for me is like pulling a styrofoam cooler out of the backseat of a car.

My goodness, that was awful. I hate, hate, hate the way he sings. I've tried, but I just can't. I'll be pushing the PSD button next time.

Wow, that's a lot of hate.
I think this is a lovely ballad, expressively and movingly sung.

One of RT's better-sounding songs, to me. Is that Judith Owen singing with?

I kind of get the Wizard bit. Getting into this tune is a bit of a challenge for me, but I really appreciate that we're hearing new RT on RP. Thompson has created an impressive and important body of work over the past 40+ years, and I certainly want to hear what he's currently up to. That's why I tune in.
Snoozer..... He sounds like the Lion from the Wizard of Oz.

Lyrics you could see cming from the other side of the frozen lake. Dreadful self indulgent song. Almost sounds like a parody.
I'll listen to Richard Thompson over Josh Groban ANY time. The various colors, moods and timbres of his rich lyrics, guitar work and heartfelt vocals have depth and truth. A true artist and not just a marketing machine.

I spent a couple of years in North Dakota. In early April I'd leave town a couple times a week and drive out to the prairie to look for the migrating snow geese. I'd watch them fly over in long waves against a slate gray sky as I braced myself against the prairie wind.
Yes, I enjoyed it.

Amazingly moving and heartfelt...
depressing, uninspired, pretentious, endless whining, please let it stop!

Not a fan, sorry. I realize it's not "fish on a slob," but it sure sounds like it.
Quite lovely.
very tasty
