The day I heard that Hutchence died by suicide, a part of me died too. What hope do we have when someone who had everything could still see no hope for the future? I learned more later about the problems he faced, but its still so incredibly sad.

Meanwhile, easy 10's on almost all INXS songs which always get me up and bopping!

Criminally underrated band and not much mentioned these days. Hutchence was one of the most charismatic front men in the history of popular music. Lucky the folks who got to see them live.

1987 and a 16 yr old me won tickets on Triple M to INXS Kick tour at the Ent Cent in Sydney. For the first time (and probably last!)  I had girls everywhere trying go on a date with me. Thanks Michael and RIP legend

Can't help but remember my wild English mate "Short-Circuit" Mike, from Newcastle, bopping and lip-synching to this around the bungalow we had in Kuta Beach Christmas '88/ New Year's '89, especially the morning after we did some up-all-night Magic Mushroom Omelets at Midnight Oil Cafe over in Legian. Agreed 100%! 

My enjoyment of this track comes from memories of "lip synching" this with a couple of classmates in (whatever grade a 10 year old is in) music class back at Mukilteo Elem school, gosh what an assignment that was!  I remember the look on Ms. White's face when we started playing it.  Looking back now I realize she probably LOVED this song, heck she probably danced at clubs when this was popular.  As a 10 year old though, the meaning of the song was lost on us....we just heard the words "Devil" and "Hell" and that was enough to make it cool.  An 8 from me (7 for the track and +1 for the memory) - Long Live RP and here's to all schools being able to keep teaching MUSIC to the kids.

Couldn't really get into this even at the time. Just felt like Aussie faux-rock, provincial and a little desperate. I started getting turned on to INXS only with their later albums and songs like Suicide Blonde and, especially, Baby Don't Cry.

They sure had a good thing going, strong songwriting that was masked in a slight veil of pop, which made the music accessible to a huge audience.

Then someone had to develop a fancy for auto-erotic asphyxiation, and that was the end of that.

After all these years hearing this piece as a sort of background, tonight I have earbuds in. And I hear the lyrics. I suppose the lesson is to try and not assume that anything is really deserving of background music status until you have listened. The near-constant stream of sounds that surround us can make it possible to miss lyrics that resonate. But for RP, I would never had realized that INXS had some real substance. My bad.

The monotony of my local radio station meant they played things at almost the same time every day.  Devil Inside meant I was nearly finished my afternoons work on the milk truck.  Thinking back makes me even happier to be an RP listener these days.
