As she submarines
The rope loops round her feeble feet
Before the dawn
Breaks on her sorry grasp

In a blink and in one motion
Rope constricts
Rips her towards the ocean

She never finds her bearings
Sucking splash into her lungs

Though I cannot see
I can hear her smile as she sings

And though I cannot see
I can hear her smile as she sings

Very pleasant little ditty.
Love this, sweet song
hmmm... I think the PSD button's been into the mushrooms again. Several times over the last 2 months when I've hit PSD Groovy 6 I've beentreated to this Alt-J track, then a tinysnippet of thebluebottle fly from Umma Gumma then Bill telling me it's the Groovy mix... and then it loops and loops and loops - song/Bill/song/Bill... until I get bored and switch back over to main mix.
Interesting track, as I often think after hearing more from them here. They've really developed a knack for building a song out of nothing. By that I mean, no intro hook or anything structured, it just grows and becomes something. Interesting and unusual vocal approach too. Very likable!
Thanks  you Brian Eno.
I was listening to RP for well over a year before I discovered the Comments section. I remember thinking (prior to browsing) that, given the imaginative and eclectic programming that Bill and Rebecca provide, the listeners of RP should provide equally interesting comments, not just "the usual" trolling found on most media sites. I don't know why I'm shocked and disappointed that it turns out not to be the case... humans being humans after all, and remarkably adept at finding the worst in any situation rather than feeling blessed to even have this opportunity. Even before the PSD option, there was always the option to return to listening to "normal" radio to be reminded just how fantastic and diverse the offerings are here on RP - whether they happen to be your taste or not.
I don't like Vegemite, but am not going to attack Australia. Please remain calm and civil, and understand that taste is not an academic argument. I teach composition classes, and we talk a lot about 'non-disprovable arguments'. Look instead to the reach and experimentation Bill & Co. have modeled for us, including 'failed experiments', that allow our musical tastes, and us, to grow. We are here because of their hard work; please don't dump on them.

Alt-J seems to be a very polarizing act here at RP, at least with commenting listeners.  HAHAHA to ALL of you that have the (1st world) problem of HAVING to endure through this song....

{#Moon} (I was looking for a violin playing smiley BUTT this works too)

Heck...if I were BillG and saw this type of reaction to something, it might spur me towards playing it MORE just to elicit the (what I find) HI-larious reactions from some of you.  I say LONG LIVE RP!

If you look carefully at the most ... uh, prolific complainers, it's mostly two IDs.  If you look even more closely, it becomes apparent that one is simply a sock puppet of the other.
This song is outstanding. It exemplifies the variety of music you will find here. If you don't like it, try to be constructive. Don't troll.
Yuck, just yuck.

Definite 8 most excellent . Saw them at a small festival in England in 14 , had the tent spellbound
Is it possible to downvote something twice?

Possibly because music is not seen...it is heard. {#Biggrin}
Hey Alt-J!
Best ingested as a full listen to the album as a whole; most of the tracks on it are complimented by the others, in my experience.

Sorry, paradiseregained. I do have a high educational degree in a serious topic, so I think maybe that I could be considered to be sentient. And a human being. I do like Alt-J, and cannot tell you why. It is a gut-level thing, and I sense something worthwhile in their music; I always listen carefully when they are on. Not logical, but then what is logical about taste in art, anyway? Sorry that this all frustrates you. I admit to being frustrated by other artists, like the infuriating Beth Orton, just to name one. But I think that people that like her music are probably as sentient as I am. Whatever.

Think at Bjoerk as she started: she devided the worldcommunity more than any other. At least it's just music, and being offered by RP it's just an offer in it's most democratic behavior: Yes, they can!

Please anyone dissing music on this station, we REALLY REALLY don't care if you don't like something....seriously...shut up!!! If you don't have something nice to say.....dont say it. Everything Bill and Rebecca play IS good music...we are not the appointed professionals here. Thats what the rating is for.

Oh and....Alt-J is genius, just saying.

Uh.. this is a listener supported station.  If we don't like something, you vote on it and then express your opinion in this forum.  Bill gets a sense of if the song should still be played or not..

At least that's the way I thought it worked..  so {#Ass} if I don't like it, I'm gonna say something.  Don't read the forum.
Pure bliss

oh oh oh ... rubbish-alert! Thome thoughts about that:

„we REALLY REALLY don't care if you don't like something“ —-> Wrong! I care a lot.

„If you don't have something nice to say.....dont say it.“ -—> Is this an opportunist’s opinion? Hey, this is not North Korea!

„Everything Bill and Rebecca play IS good music“ —-> Generalized nonsense. But yes, for me most of the music they play is good.

„we are not the appointed professionals here.“ -—> That’s right, but for what reason do we have to be appointed professionals? To like or dislike a song? Isn’t music 100% subjective?

„Thats what the rating is for.“ -—> Aha, thanks for the guidance. If my understanding of this is correct: only positive comments are allowed by you, the master?

„Oh and....Alt-J is genius, just saying.“ -—> Definately not, and that’s MY opinion.

I agree that they play a tremendously great mix of music.....999.99999 % of the time but Alt-J is.....well, words just fail.
STOP ! STOP ! STOP!  Can't you SEE how horrendous this shit is !!!!!!
Terrible, pretentious, annoying.

I just can't get my head around the concept that anybody with the  minimum qualifications to be considered a sentient human-being could actually LIKE Alt-J.  The words 'pretentious', 'absurd', 'bleeeach' (though not strictly speaking a word) and 'abysmal' don't really do their music justice.

Oh, lord, another self-anointed troll. Do us all a favor, please. Just go away and shit on some other web site. I don't know (and frankly don't care) if you'll feel better, but we will. Thanks and sayonara.
Saw these guys at ACL Fest in October.  Excellent show.

Maybe you should find another station to listen to..
I know I had something to say but I seem to have drifted away somewhere...

woah, this comment opens a huge can of words. .. ugh, pardon, that was actually a typo, honest.

not sure where to start... thinking. hmm.. what do you mean by it? Where does thinking kick in in the art appreciation routine.. is it always necessary to think about a work before I appreciate it?  By sentient, do you just mean rational analysis or does it extend to awareness of what I am feeling? Is thinking the progenitor of appreciation or just some parasitic follow-on, like an art curator's bulbous commentary filling out the first 32 pages of an otherwise half-decent art catalog? Isn't most art intuitive? Isn't a person's response to it prior to a rational analysis of it?

with millions of album sales and regular plays on radio, maybe it is your head that is wrong.   They are an aquired taste I guess.   I do like a band trying to do something diffent though.

Perhaps the sentience problem isn't where you think it is.  Though 'perhaps' doesn't really do the thought justice.

now I need a strong coffee {#Sleep}
Ambitious.

Im an old schooler and Im throughly enjoying their music. It affects me in no other way music has. It seeps into your soul saying "everything is alright".

A favorite band of mine... purchased this album as soon as it came out and I'm not disappointed one little bit.
Nope.
The moment of silence and then the vocal part next to that violin is pure gold <3

<some nonsense about how he/she is unhappy>

(Actually, Hoosfoos didn't write anything, but relied on a simple graphic — perhaps created by someone else — to voice her/his rather inspecific displeasure with this and, presumably, other songs on the playlist.)

Wouldn't it be better for all concerned if you just stopped listening to this station?  Sorry, I am not usually this negative, but Jeez Oh Pete, if you don't like this, stop subjecting yourself to it!

...............................................................

On a much more cheerful subject, I am really impressed by these Alt-J fellers.

This song reminds of some of the reasons why I'm not real big on Elliott Smith.

Yeah,  they are getting some major radio exposure now with one of their songs....The one on the radio is not too experimental...

If composition is like weaving a carpet of different sounds together then I really love the way these guys pay so much attention to the garns they are using.
I like the chords and the sound but it's still only a 5, it feels a bit aimless. Not sure if that'll change after listening to this a few more times.
New Alt-j !!!
I like them maybe too much
