I only play for money, honey
Look at what this fun has done to me
It has me gunning for the country
Sky's memory and moonless
Vision copied from the bootlegs
We are out of tune so mostly tuneless

For a fee I'll fight any foe
For a fee I'll take it and go

I'll only play if [?]
Only when my lips are moving
You've been careful here to keep the tempo
Only play with money, careful
Not to trigger some reversal
And to live by an obscure example

For a fee I'll fight any foe
For a fee I'll stop any show

I know, depending on you to get this right
Depending on you to climb these heights
Depending on you, it's pay per view

Pick the path of least resistance
Over the hills and out of wisdom
And just when I thought we beat the system
I knew a gentle man of leisure
He loved to talk about his treasure
And of how he got it for a song, song, song, song

For a fee I'll right any wrong
For a fee I'll right any wrong
For a fee I'll fight any foe
For a fee I'll stop any show

I know, depending on you to get this right
Depending on you to climb these heights
Depending on you, it's pay per view

Only live for happy endings
[?] we started parting
My affinity for closing clues
Never been an opportunist
I accept the prize if I somehow surprise us all and get there soonest

I only play for money, honey
I only play with money, honey

You are a bunch of *swearword* mouthbreathers, disgracing this commercial free radiostation. Stop being so horribly disrespectful and just be gone.

me too. the female vocal lead on this one doesn't sound like neko much. or if it does, she's improved!
The new stuff is good, but I prefer old pornographers.
They're performing in Detroit May 11. Going to the show with Kid No. 2. My first concert in ... YEARS.

Ticket prices are what has kept me away mostly.  Most shows are too expensive and I refuse to give money to Live Nation/TicketMastser or buy anything on the secondary market.  Prices for this show are reasonable and the venue is GREAT.  I'm in!
Nice live version of this song performed on CBC Music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HG23sCkjKM

I was in sixth-grade when a friend's father did artwork for the local concert hall and was given several free tickets as a bonus. The concert was KISS on their last tour before they took their costumes off (and then later put them back on again) and opening for KISS was WOW and the Plasmatics. Between Wendy not wearing a lot of clothes and KISS's tank turret that held the drums which finished the concert by "shooting" the speakers above the lead singer and which all exploded at exactly the right time, it was quite a night for a sixth-grader!
What happened to the Old Pornographers? 80's Style.

Interesting reverse assonance... they should have added the word "few" to get the "u" sound too.

I agree with you about Fagan. He's very good. I still maintain that the method is the same; it's just that Fagan does it extremely well.

Also, I may have been exaggerating a bit with that "90%" business.

I don't know, but perhaps they are doing that thing where you just make up words to fit the melody and rhythm of the line. They're not supposed to convey any particular meaning; as long as they seem related to each other in some tenuous way and fit some kind of recognizable speech pattern, they're fine. Beyond that, the words are just part of the mix.

90% of Steely Dan lyrics fit this compositional model.

I'm with Lazarus on this one.

So here you go.  When I first heard New Pornographer's or for that matter Neko Case, I thought - this sounds a bit different and maybe I could get into them.  Then I look at the lyrics, of all their songs, and am baffled.  Like the proverbial monkeys at the typewriter.  I don't know what they are trying to say and can't even make a guess to make a meaning up for myself.
2 hours ago I wrote Great 2 hour set RP. I change that to 4 hours. Love RP

I have seen both TNP and Neko Case solo and both are worth the money. If you get the chance, don't even waste time considering whether to go. Buy those tix!

Woah..... haven't heard this before but I'm diggin' it.

7 for now but I may increase that after some more listens.
I’ve said it before but it’s worth saying again: Bill is a segue master! Gotan Projevt to New Pornographers was totally seamless
To paraphrase the refrain of a certain poster on RP:

"Every freakin' one of my buddy mercenaries in this platoon is singing and dancin'!"

Like the new NP with Neko back. However, they do tend to drown out the singers, even Neko's powerful voice. (Realizing this is a mixed production where they could have emphasized the vocals more, but choose not to.) It's NP's style—after all, they have to balance out the insane drummer! :-)

They also need to sound different than a Neko album, so I'm fine with it. I love her voice at any level in the mix!

Just saw them play this live last month... nicely done!
Way cool new song by them! Bravo! I'm always looking forward to anything magical Neko does! Here, she reminds me of Kate Pierson! I love her solo stuff greatly, too; she's WOW...
I rarely tune in Sunday a.m.  Pleasantly surprised with this. A real smart toe-tapper. That's an 8. And I like Neko, but I like her a lot more with the New Porns than her own solo.

Not bad for "new" music, sure beats Kiss 106.1 FM (or whatever it's called nowadays, seems all the FM stations have new names now)

I think I like the other RP offering from this album (Avalanche Alley) a bit better.

Yes, newly added - this album was only released a week or two ago; I like what I've heard from it so far.

Nice vintage feel... enough to make me want to hear more from the album, but not go out and buy it.
