Since it costs a lot to win, and even more to lose,
You and me bound to spend some time wond'rin' what to choose.
Goes to show, you don't ever know,
Watch each card you play and play it slow,
Wait until that deal come round,
Don't you let that deal go down, no, no.

I been gamblin' hereabouts for ten good solid years,
If I told you all that went down it would burn off both of your ears.
Goes to show you don't ever know
Watch each card you play and play it slow,
Wait until that deal come round,
Don't you let that deal go down, no, no.

Since you poured the wine for me and tightened up my shoes,
I hate to leave you sittin' there, composin' lonesome blues.
Goes to show you don't ever know
Watch each card you play and play it slow,
Wait until that deal come round, don't you let that deal go down.

Wait until that deal come round, don't you let that deal go down,
Wait until that deal come round, don't you let that deal go down,
Don't you let that deal go down, don't you let that deal go down.

Nope.
All this music sound the same but I'll admit he's better by himself!
Well it isn't the LP Giobbi remake. I much prefer the real Deal.

RS does survey musicians when they do their "Best of" series--it's not just the editorial staff making up numbers. Check it out, you might be surprised.

Technically, Garcia might not be amongst the very best to strum six strings, but there are very few who can put emotion into the instrument they play as Jerry did. There's a scant number off folks who can bring me to tears of joy/sadness with the notes they pick. Many times over, Jerry, with and without the Dead, did just that for me.

Maybe Mariah Carey does that for you, and that's great. Find the joy where you can. ;-)

Very well put! Always been one of my favorites... one hellova banjo player ta boot!

You know....since you played this...I realize that you don't play much GD...which is one of the greaest American RnR bands ever.

So please consider playing more GD. They have songs for every day of the week!
I have two very cool neckties designed by Jerry Garcia -- yes, THIS Jerry Garcia.

your saying Dead is better dead than Dead alive?
interesting

Just wait until the Zombie Apocalypse, then you will see that the Dead are much better when they stay dead.
Where did Garcia get that twang in his accent. Did he live in Tennessee for a while?

Check out this song by the Jerry Garcia Band on the live double CD circa 1991.  It ain't GD.

This is one of Jerry Garcia's solo albums without the Dead.
Great stuff, displaying Garcia's jugband, folk and country roots,
which influenced the Dead's sound, of course.
But this album is just Jerry: put that doob down & listen up, folks!
As for musicianship, commented on below, Jerry Garcia is ranked 13th
among the all time greatest guitarists according to Rolling Stone magazine.

never heard a gd song I liked
Just a classic tune from Jerry, and for all those who saw dozens of shows, a GD staple.

I laughed out loud when I saw this cover but having discovered it's from the early 70's, not early 80's, I'm mildly impressed - it's cheesy and cliched a dozen years ahead of it's time.

Not a bad song on this entire album. A must have to any dead head or music lover.

NICE Intro into a really diverse LP... would LOVE to hear more from this one. "Sugaree"; "Spidergawd"; "To Lay Me Down"
A couple or more years later, my response is YES! I just listened to the album tonight. What has always has impressed me is the soaring pedal steel guitar solos. There are not very many examples of his work on this instrument (New Riders, CSN&Y Teach Your Children for two), but he did not play it in anything like a traditional way. There are several really good instances of this on the Garcia album.
hmmm... I think they were accomplished musicians...you must have partied too hard. The_Enemy wrote:
I only saw the Dead once. Half the experience is partying with tens of thousands of strangers in the parking lot. The other half is dancing with tens of thousands of strangers inside the stadium listening to the music. The Dead were good but not great musicians. However, their concerts were among the best parties ever. They get points just for that.
ahh...like the song ... not this version...any live version would be better.

You can never travel too far to hear the Dead!
Great tune -- love the album cover..

Too late to see them live, there's no explaining it, otherwise
I saw them live once in 1976. It was horrible. They couldn't even tune their instruments. I had been playing guitar for about 2 years. I was disgusted and have loathed them ever since. My brother said it was because they were coming off a long break . The only decent thing for them to do would have been to apologize and offer everyone refunds but of course they didn't because they suck.

OK I am not a deadhead - will never be. But on a purely musical level, I will never understand how this band made it. I would rather hear white noise.

A great song sounds even better when it follows a significantly inferior composition. Guess I'll have to go home and play this song on my own guitar tonight....
Man, I played this record a lot. I still remember many a night as a teenager getting yelled at to turn this album down. ....that was a long way ago! Still like it....

You said it Anne Marie. That's what it was and still is all about.
Gone but not forgotten-love ya Jerry!
Gimme the Dead Set version over this one any day... his voice sounds too clear and clean in this one, IMO. But I do like that slide guitar in the background.

Another fan of the live album Dead Set. Agree with the above, but I like this too. I think it is from the recently released compilation of Jerry's solo work. You can find me in the old farts section.

As good as it gets
A few years ago, my friends and our families were vacationing at the Mt. Washington hotel in NH. All the menfolk decided to retire to this lovable, grungy basement crypt/bar and enjoy a few drinks. There was this local guy playing Dead tunes on his guitar and everyone was having a good time. Someone gets up to use the men\'s room and he passes by the beautiful people\'s lounge where there\'s a TV. He notices that Jerry Garcia had just died and he comes back into the bar and says \"too bad about Jerry\" to the guitarist. He didn\'t know! He looked like someone had shot his dog. I thought the guy was putting us on but then he started to cry! All that time we thought it was a tribute to Jerry. It was probably one of those \"moments\" in his life that he\'ll never forget (...where were you when...) and he had the news broken to him by a bunch of bozos who could have cared less about the whole scene. Wierd.
I don\'t think I\'ve ever listened to the pedal steel in this song before, very nice, excellent groove, Thanks RP! (pimp)
