Four and twenty years ago, I come into this life,
the son of a woman and a man who lived in strife.
He was tired of being poor and he wasn't into selling door to door
and he worked like the devil to be more.
A different kind of poverty now upsets me so.
Night after sleepless night, I walk the floor and I want to know- why am I so alone?
Where is my woman can I bring her home? Have I driven her away? Is she gone?
Morning comes to sunrise and I'm driven to my bed.
I see that it is empty and there's devils in my head.
I embrace the many colored beast. I grow weary of the torment, can there be no peace?
And I find myself just wishing that my life would simply cease.
the son of a woman and a man who lived in strife.
He was tired of being poor and he wasn't into selling door to door
and he worked like the devil to be more.

I remember parking my car way out at the end of the pier at Wakura Onsen, in Noto Hanto, in the late fall of '99, looking out at Noto-jima and Nanao-wan, wondering wtf was up with my (then soon-to-be ex-) wife, whom I was sure was my Destiny, the one true love of my life, wondering how or if I could hope to hang on in the face of it all. Something about how melancholy this song was, and the unique, perfect harmonies and arrangements that this supergroup could do so well together, just made me sit there and cry and listen to the whole CD. There is of course no real way to ever be ready for Life's toughest challenges, but at least, I believe that we can look for hope in the inspirations and soul-truths revealed by others before us...

Oh its definitely on there, and part of what makes this one of my handful of desert island albums. Still looking for that desert island with a working power outlet.
I think it was the (UK) Goodies where someone was manually playing LPs on a knitting needle spindle with the corner of an A4 paper sheet acting as the stylus/acoustic horn... Serious wow and flutter!

Been so long since I heard this excellent folkie classic!

Yeah, it was code for Still's age (24) at the time.
was 420 code for something back in 1970?

In 1972 our old house in Portland, OR looked like the album cover. Well, the hippies are gone, the house is gone but thank god this song lives on.
Darkly beautiful

I think he starts to sing the "I grow weary of the torment" line and then remembers the "I embrace" line comes first, thus causing a brief pause. There may have been a toke involved.
Still love this tasty acoustic folky blues tune.
beautiful song - always remember that pause between "I" and "embrace"

What a great cover! I love Aimee Mann's voice. I always play this song on my streaming service along with the Coldplay version. Both are so wonderful.

Yep, still awesome.
I'm always amazed at the insight this generation of songwriters had at such a young age.

Crosby once said (in an interview with Rolling Stone) that Stills's "trip is when he sings." I've always admired what he does with a somewhat limited voice.
Wow... have not heard that one in a long while. Great song!
Imagine this was 41 years ago. You are definitely permitted to have forgotten this gem. 41 years….
Strangely I don't remember this song being on this album.

Jumped from an 8 to 10 in one hop. Hadn't heard this for years - only an 8? How could I have been so forgetful??
Oh Yeah! ...timeless is the word!
Stills could have been a star, if...

Finding my mind instantly playing, craving, begging for the Country Girl Suite that comes after on the old recording... AWESOME, isn't it?!
Well, it's a LOT more than 4 + 20 now. More like 4 + 50. Still embrace the many-colored beast every now and then, however.

Always loved this song. Only flaw is that it's too short. This one deserves more airplay.
Mine too
My favorite CSNY album. I haven't heard this song in a million years! Thanks RP!
Blast from the past. Lovely song on an uneven album.
Oh, what beautiful sound - another classic has been remastered?
