Blind Dog Toby - Update

Posted by PoundPuppy - Oct 22, 2013 - 2:03pm
Ok so he's a cat.... but Lightnin Hopkins is not an actual lightning bolt either...lol

Well this only serves as further proof that my boy Toby is indeed immortal. He has completely lost his sight in both eyes. Totally blind. The vet is as confused as I am. No sign of injury, no sign of discomfort other than confused.

Both eyes are opaque blue and do not react to light or visual stimuli. A kitty stroke, unseen injury, reaction to a poison or toxin??

I took him out in the backyard and he cautiously walked around a bit. I think the smells and sounds were freaking him out some.

I put him in his favorite "sleeping in the sun" chair in his room. He's sound asleep now.

My vet  got some labs and suggested a few things to help him. The dogs are both sporting tiny 'lil bells on their collars. I've walked him around the house a few times "leading" him with my voice.

Wild Jungle Beast Toby will now be known as Blind Dog Toby. He is also an inside kittah now.

So I got a call today from the vet that ran the labs. Toby is diabetic. We'll try him on pills for now and see how that goes.

This means it was very likely a gradual thing going blind. I'll also need to watch him for signs of kidney issues. Kidney failure is a possibility.

He seems to be adjusting well. I take him out two or three times a day to walk in the grass. He's not fond of the litter box I got him and that is fine with me. I just follow behind him and keep him away from the fence. He walks and sniffs. My blind Boo Boo boy.

Animals are amazingly resilient.
You will both be fine.

Poor puppy/kitty! With the new name Blind Dog Toby, he should learn to play the blues.

I had a foster cat once that went blind from a stroke; I don't know if this is what happened to your fur friend but I am sorry you both are going through this.

aww.

i had a deaf siamese who went blind at one point. she adapted well and lived a good life. even worked it out when i had to move and move furniture. she just meowed loud when she got "lost" in the house. she was happy, regardless. i hope your boy works it out and is just fine, too.

He'll be safer inside anyway. Hope it isn't something serious that caused this all of a sudden.
