Yeah, a lot of the bartenders and DJs around here play some of their tunes and I usually end up asking "Who was that?"

I stopped in my local watering hole yesterday after work yesterday and wondered why it was so crowded in the middle of the week.  Local, electronic, pop duo Sylvan Esso were in there hanging out, signing albums and posters, and promoting an upcoming multi-band, two-day concert they've arranged at the Durham Bulls Ballpark - Fleet Foxes is scheduled as well.  It's kinda pricey though.   Anyhow, they were nice folks; I talked with them a bit after the crowd thinned out.  I only know a small bit of their material, but they're very popular around here.

Salt Lake Tribune converts to nonprofit; is looking to build an endowment.

Not really local but a strong paper in the region.

"The famed Can Opener bridge over Gregson Street may be peeling the tops off fewer trucks in the future.
The street will close Wednesday for two weeks so the N.C. Railroad can elevate the bridge eight inches. When the street reopens Nov. 5, the clearance of the bridge will have been raised from 11 feet 8 inches to a more truck-friendly 12 feet 4 inches..."

So, bad as it was, it could have been much worse.

Yes, it's fortunate that the area was mostly evacuated before the blast; that's a very busy intersection for auto and foot traffic - lots of students from a nearby high school and Duke Univ.  If it were two hours earlier it could've been horrifically bad.  I hadn't heard any more about the firefighter yet; I assume part of a building collapsed on him or he was hit by flying debris.

Oddly enough, the "11'8" Bridge" camera caught the sound and percussion from the explosion.  It's about 5 blocks from the site (for some reason they repeated it 3 times).  It was quite loud.

Damn.

I got delayed for a while as a rental truck got stuck under the notorious 11'8" bridge yesterday - eventually another driver allowed me to switch lanes and get around the truck.  The truck driver apparently wasn't going fast enough to tear the roof off, by the time I got there, they were letting air out of his front tires to try to back him out.
Surprisingly, there's no footage of it yet on the 11'8" website, though there is an amusing one from last week.
