Position players made an appearance on the mound just three times in 2008. Then it occurred 90 times by 2019, and 131 last season.

Tuesday night, the Padres beat the Royals 19-2. Kansas City shortstop Tyler Tolbert pitched the 9th. He allowed six hits, six runs, walked a batter and served up two homers. What’s the point? It ridiculously skews and inflates stats. It’s just dumb. It bastardizes the game, like no other sport.

Reds catcher Jose Trevino has pitched four times, PJ Higgins once. Rockies catcher Brett Sullivan has pitched six innings across five appearances

There is nothing wrong with conceding. Save everyone the trouble. Save the losing team from blowing up the bullpen, requiring roster moves for fresh arms the next day.

Implement the Mercy Rule after seven innings. Save us the circus.
