Well, you and OV could take some responsibility and post something rather than observing from on high or taking umbrage, reading something into other people's silence.
I'll just say that 9 / 11 has gone from a unifying event to a polarizing event over the past 25 years, imho.
I take the silence as an example of the polarization.
The event is already being either removed or never entered into many high school history text books. That speaks volumes all by itself.
I think most of us are pretty good readers so when someone says âyou missed my pointâ I wonder whether or not the message wasnât expressed as well as it couldâve been
I often miss OV's points. I don't take it as a failing of either of us - we're both blind men feeling an elephant.
9/11 is history now. It has gone through an evolution. It certainly was an inflection point. We could have gone a lot of different ways after. Briefly, we were united by the tragedy. Soon after, we were divided by the response. 25 years later it looks more and more like it achieved the goal of the attackers. They knew us better than we knew ourselves. Until we figure out ourselves (our better selves), a remembrance of the even seems off key - we haven't learned the lesson that the ceremony should remind us of. The turmoil over the attendance/behaviors of the day just reinforce that for me.

Well, you could have taken some responsibility and post something rather than observing your perch. Because that is my perception from your post, whether or not it is what you intended. My point is that you are one of the ones who could have mentioned it the previous day and you did not.
By commenting that you found that interesting, you seem to be reading something into other people's silence. Maybe not. So please expand on why you found it interesting.
Ok then, for me the shock, sadness, and anger about the attacks are so deeply apart of my world view that it isn't something I need to post about. It truly was a world changing event but if you are going to commemorate the event, please try to remember all the people, not just focusing on the heros.
Please. save it. You missed the point of my post entirely and your points are moot. Gnite
Not one mention here yesterday. I found that interesting. Not good or bad. Just interesting.
I remember my former partner asking over and over where all the people were. "What happened to the people? Did they all get out? Did anybody get out?"
I tried to talk to her about it a little bit but she was kind of in shock. I just went to the kitchen and pulled out a grater. It was a horrible prop, I admit. It was the only thing I could think of.
It's still difficult to process. This is what humans are capable of when motivated by hatred.

What is this, some sort of tag team moral outrage thing? How ironic that it seems to fall on your own deaf ears. I read this and left it for awhile, thinking you might want to remove me from your Kurtster angst. Ya'll go way back it seems. You don't need to hide behind your dislike for him to get at me. I posted my own thoughts. Kurtster's reply to my post is there for you without linking me. Just reply directly to my post if you have a problem with something I say. We'll hash it right out.
But thanks for the humble if informative directives.
I chose this thread, originated by yet another member who once interacted with us, because it was suitable, and empty of all the crap the other 9/11 "commemorative" threads attracted, (I haven't looked, but I'll bet I can find some of your alternate opinions in some of those) and because it suited me, though apparently not you. That's ok. Apparently you didn't read my post much less listen in the intended tone and jumped to yet another "conclusion"
I won't comment further except to say that your indignation is sorely misplaced and totally wasted here. I'll stand on my intentions. I pointed out an obvious connection with the extension of hatred and the events surrounding 9/11, while you seemed to put forth with an obvious example of acute predilection. Despise me, my posts, my memes. It changes nothing in my message. The same one I attempt to express in one form or another most every day.
I'm sorry that including you and k in the same response was inappropriate to you. I had no intention in tarring you with the same brush and probably should have made separate responses, it is just that his was a later response to you.
You are right. I will simplify and hopefully clarify things and respond directly to your post.

Other people have shit going on in their lives, too.

Yes, I was waiting to see what got posted here, too. Nothing as I was pretty much expecting.
Things have changed here a lot lately.
I've been keeping this place at a distance for a little while. Everything is broken in meat space and commanding my attention away from here.
Is what it is.

I donât think that silence on a music forum should lead to the conclusion that weâve all suddenly become communist Saudis. Itâs a solemn time without a need for virtue signaling or insisting on making a speech, sleeping through the honors to the dead, and then flying to a private golf club in another nation. That would be pathetic, childish, and senile.
And I think that you are overthinking the reason for my post. It was an observation in context, and no conclusions were suggested other than what is pretty much a direct link to the results of hatred in the world.

For me, growing up in the United States, 9/11 was an inflection point - there was before, and there was after. If you will, an innocence lost even though I was already 40. It seemed to affect everyone at the time, though this is no longer the case: over a third of the present population of the US was not born yet, or has immigrated since. The other one I've lived through was Covid. I'm sure there are more on the horizon.
I must respectfully disagree that one does not often fuel the other. I think history will bear that out.
100%.
The determination of whether it was religion and/or hatred is pointless. It's generally agreed that Bin Laden was responsible. Sure, his rhetoric was rooted in fundamental Islamist ideology, but he stated a hatred for the US repeatedly in the years leading up to the attacks. His late '90s fatwa explicity stated it was the duty of every Muslim to kill American citizens, be they civilian or military, and their allies globally.
After the attacks, he praised the destruction and deaths to his primary enemy, the US.
It's a chicken and egg...but each fuels the other.

I view that 9/11 event more as motivated by extremely misguided religious fervor. Hatred may have been involved, but not at its core.

I view it as a good thing. I find this place is actually kinder and gentler than it used to be. Or is it my eyes Mr. Proust?
