Lacking in some direction
Althea told me upon scrutiny
That my back might need protection
I told Althea that treachery
Was tearing me limb from limb
Althea told me, now cool down boy
Settle back easy, Jim
You may be Saturday's child all grown
Moving with a pinch of grace
You may be a clown in the burial ground
Or just another pretty face
You may be the fate of Ophelia
Sleeping and perchance to dream
Honest to the point of recklessness
Self-centred to the extreme
Ain't nobody messin' with you but you
Your friends are getting most concerned
Loose with the truth, maybe its your fire
Baby I hope you don't get burned
When the smoke has cleared, she said
That's what she said to me
You're gonna want a bed to lay your head
And a little sympathy
There are things you can replace
And others you cannot
The time has come to weigh those things
This space is gettin' hot
You know this space is gettin' hot
I told Althea, I'm a roving sign
That I was born to be a bachelor
Althea told me, OK that's fine
So now I'm trying to catch her
Can't talk to you without talking to me
We're guilty of the same old things
Thinking a lot about less and less
And forgetting the love we bring
Althea - the song is an 11x Elevendy-million
Dead studio albums though... especially this, their Disco record..
This is a surprisingly good studio album from the Dead. Nothing like live, of course, but one of the the better studio albums after American Beauty and Workingman's.
I am one of the few in this world who likes their studio work better than their live performances (usually).
"Nobody gets too much heaven no more..."
I'm not sure if I'm fully appreciating the points that the two of you are making. I believe I do but allow me say/add this. I totally understand why listeners are compelled to post praise or convey how they enjoy a particular song or band or even how a song has a special intimate meaning for them based on a past life experience. I also understand that everyone has their own taste and in many instances may even tell their friends that they "hate" that band or song. I know that I have. However, I will never understand why anyone would feel a need to express a dislike for music via an online forum. What's to be gained? I have been listening to RP since what must be going on 20 years now and in addition to hearing music that I have always loved, I've been introduced to more artists that I could ever count. Some I like, and some that just don't do it for this 66 year old rock, blues, folk and jazz fan (excuse me if I have omitted any other genres but my comments include those as well). PSD is a great option but even then, I wonder if that feature has made me impatient and how that may have limited my musical listening horizon. So yeah, I just don't get why one would be compelled to criticize musicians on a posting board when we would all be so much better off hearing what others enjoy and perhaps why.
Finally, as a parent of dedicated "starving musician" I have grown to respect all who choose to pursue this path, whether I enjoy their "voice" and what they are creating. or not. And when you do come across live performances in clubs or on the street that you enjoy, walk up to them and let them know (along with a big fat over-tip). It means a lot and that encouragement may even be what keeps their commitment to their love of music going.
I started this rant when Althea was playing and now ending with Dire Wolf. Did I mention that I'm a Dead Head as Well. "Please don't murder me"
Great reply, chinacat, and to be clear, my issue is with the nonchalant use of one of the worst words in English (hate) - I have no issue with folks expressing dislike for something, it's that terrible H word that gets so many people into the negative vibrations of life.
Grateful Dead
Bruce Springsteen
U2
Coldplay
Beyoncé
I truly feel I'm missing some neural connection.
But I like 'Althea'!
Out of their entire cannon, this is the only Dead song I can tolerate.
Canon. Have you ever listened to "Terrapin Station"? And to be fair, they considered themselves to be a live band and only reluctantly recorded albums in the studio, so under the right circumstances live I'm sure they would have made a Deadhead out of you, too!
that album cover is really something else!
same artist who did beegees or Andy Gibb album covers?
*EDIT - i didn't scroll before posting this. i see i'm not the first to think this!
Um, wait a second officer, ah, here it is
It was stuck(don’t ask) between my 24 hour Church of Elvis certification of my sainthood and my Church of the Latter Day Dude minister card,
I love Althea
But c’mon, put some of the other million classics in rotation
Maybe a whole night of the 1000 versions of Dark Star?
On second thought, carry on sir
And madam
Thanks for your glorious stream
Don’t take that the wrong way
Wrong band.
Wouldn't mind if RP played some of their stuff too.
i don't even like any other greatful dead song than "touch of gray" and well, i like this even better... first listen (Excellent)
Besides Playing in the Band, Touch of Grey was the other first Dead tune to catch my ear. Still trying very hard to appreciate them fully.
I have never understood deadheads. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the Dead, I even have an LP. But to like them so much as following the band around and thinking them the best band ever is perplexing to me.
It's all about live performance and each song being a frame work for extended improvisation bridgeing between songs. No two sets and no two songs were ever the same. I've sen my fair share of shows. Thye are their own Genre like John Phillip Souza. Nmae some one else who has composed a "March" you can't really. Just like you can't really compare the Dead to anything else.
Anyone who wasn't in the building for one of those magical shows many years ago has no idea what it was all about. I am proud of the fact that many, many times I was one of the, "one in ten thousand" that came for the show.
So true. Impossible to explain to those who weren't in the building for those shows and many other 70s shows and music in general. "Had to be there" is about the best explanation one can offer.
Keep speaking the truth h8rhater....unless/until we find music that's used to kill people, well I don't see how anyone can 'Hate' music. Long Live RP and NOT hating.

But ain't it funny how the "worst band ever" had more than 3,000 sold-out shows. They'd have five night stints at Madison Square Garden, all sold out. I suppose your retort will be that none of the folks who bought tickets to those shows knew anything about music. That is, like you do.
You nailed it k-man! Somehow I doubt pboucher is still around, but if they are, they should try putting on headphones, closing their eyes, and listening to how those guitars sing, play with each other, fade, soar... Then listen for the jug band rhythm. Amazing! Musical genius.
8 --> 9
Jerry's guitar doesn't give you goosebumps? Listen again.
Hives. I believe those are hives.
This is one of the reasons The Dead are so revered
I think the word you intended to type is "reviled"...nice try though...
IMHO no Grateful Dead song should be below a 8
Even if it is a Bobby song? Well, OK then.
Jerry at his best. All heart; all joy.

Then again it may be my all time favorite song.
With big influences of Dire Straits (1978 and 1979 album) and JJ Cale, too....
Can't talk to you without talking to me
We're guilty of the same old things

Lotsa folks look back to pics from 1980 with something approaching shame...though I kinda dig it LLRP (and hi pigtail!)
If you consider name of the album, then album cover makes more sense.
As long bill stays away from the songs that were played to death
Dont be shy. Let's make it a solid TEN!
Your wish is my conmand 10 it is
Agreed. Althea is in my top 5 Dead tunes but it's so much better live.
I guess you never listed to The Shaggs.

The Shaggs! :)
Pretty sure that's not the case here.
The Dead never used a drum machine on any record or live!

I mostly observe people criticizing those who express a dislike for certain music by labeling them as "haters". I am not sure there are many self-identifying as having "hate" for any music here. In fact, I would say most of the RP audience have a great love for music in general. For those who truly hate a song or band, that is fully their choice and doesn't hurt anyone. It's simply their opinion, to be taken as seriously as YOU choose. In my opinion, those who personally berate others on this comment board are the real "haters".
Yeah but doesn't the MJ make it even better?

National anthems are used to kill people. I don't hate them; they just make me shake my head and wonder why people can't understand we're all just part of the same universe and we have to pull together.
AMEN
Testify my sister
AMEN
EXACTLY! No way to explain burnt-out stoners' poor taste. (Unless it matches up with my burnt-out stoner taste!)
RIP to both of them! Hope they're in the great beyond writing MORE great songs!! LLRP
Such the very late seventies, early eighties look to it. Really at first glance, I kinda laughed a bit. You might expect something like that on a (later version) Fleetwood Mac cover but not a Grateful Dead album and that was probably the point.
Was Bobby's idea. He always wanted to be mainstream, like Fleetwood Mac. Ha

His point: The Dead had (still have some might say) a 30 year run, were loved by millions of fans, and sold out a ridiculous number of shows. Clearly they do not suck.
Your point: Lots of people h8.

I think this gets not enough play....spin it again, BillG!! And I'm trying to re-re-rate to an 11....Long Live RP!!
And there are millions of others who still think they suck ass, so what's your point? Lots of people hate the Dead, lots of people hate music I like and vice versa.

Great groove on this track, which sounds kinda like Sugaree which is my favorite "GD" song.
My rating on this one went from an initial 7, to an 8 midway through, and the outro guitar solo solidified a final 9 rating from me.
No
Can't be any worse than this.

Long Live RP!!
Pretty sure that's not the case here.
As for the cover, Phil still looks like a nerd.
ya
. . . looks better suited a Bee Gees record.
Yeah, Jerry in a leisure suit. Glad that was an exception!
And that one reminds me of this Jem. Weird times.
Thanks so much for this!

Please don't pass your cluelessness on to another generation. Let it end here.
Lol
