In my fathers arms I'll be
The wounds this world left on my soul
Will all be healed and I'll be whole
Sun and moon will be replaced
With the light of Jesus' face
And I will not be ashamed
For my savior knows my name
It don't matter where you bury me
I'll be home and I'll be free
It don't matter where I lay
All my tears be washed away
Gold and silver blind the eye
Temporary riches lie
Come and eat from heaven's store
Come and drink and thirst no more
So weep not for me my friend
When my time below does end
For my life belongs to him
Who will raise the dead again
It don't matter where you bury me
I'll be home and I'll be free
It don't matter where I lay
All my tears be washed away
Well done, young paduan.
Ummm...not to be a pedant or anything, but its padawan...unless you actually meant a kid from a certain city in Italy...
Much as I like this record, how does one wear out a CD? Short of treating it like Reggiano, that is.
like all things, CDs don't last (though the plastics elements will be poisoning the planet for many many years to come)
Take RP to the next level Bill!
An infinite Universe!
By Sun and Moon lighting my face
Agree completely. The first time I heard a track from this on RP, i went in search of the CD and found it in a bargain bin (for shame!). I've worn it out ever since.

That's Daniel Lanois with a bass guitar, I'd say.

Really? I think it's a bass guitar. And it is one of the main reasons I really love this song.
Maybe it's just a "womp"ing drone flying around?
BTW the voice is stunning
Now every time I hear this I'm gonna picture a drone flying around the studio.

Yep
“I went to Nashville to meet Emmylou and we went to her house. I got this real sense inside the house. It’s hard to explain. I operate by feelings and instinct and you got this feeling of old school dignity, this respect for American music, inside her house. I knew there were hidden secrets there that I was not hip to and I knew I’d come out of doing that record with something that I could learn from. That was the driving force for me.
“She played me a lot of songs that she had in demo form. The best ones were the ones where she was sitting there on her own with an acoustic guitar. She was embarrased to play those ones, but I knew when I heard them that this was the album. I’d put a mic in front of her as she sat in a chair and bring in other people around her in a horseshoe shape. That was all it took.”
Excellent post - thanks for this insight!
Could not agree more. I've always loved Emmylou Harris, but Wrecking Ball has DL written all over it, in a very good way.
Great quote below about the feelings he experienced when visiting Emmylou's house ... would love to read the entire account, if there is more.

This however is brilliant.
Which just goes to show.. umm something.. Anyway 8->9
Yep, I'll second that. I think the something it goes to show is that all good artists have the ability to surprise us. I thought much the same of Johnny Cash as you of Emmylou Harris - all crass sentimentality for men with tattooed necks and grubby denim jackets set to clanging guitars - but then I listen to RP and find that he's put out some half-decent stuff that never seems to hit the radio. It's nice to have your expectations shattered and to be astonished at what someone you've written off can come up with.
The good Emmylou - great song!
but what is a "wrecking ball", please...?
?
Are you asking why she named the album "Wrecking Ball"? (One of the songs on the disc is a Neil Young track, "Wrecking Ball")
OR
Are you just asking for the definition of a "wrecking ball"? (eine Abrissbirne auf Deutsch).
Amazing how hard it was to find an image of a wrecking ball without Miley Cyrus perched on one...
I have warned my wife, if I were so lucky as to have Emmylou ask for me, I am hers!
I am not holding my breath...
Agreed. He definitely left his mark on this one.
Once when I saw ELH and she was about to sing "The Maker" she said that Dan woke her up and revitalized her career.
A great rendition but prefer that of julie & buddy miller. Grindier, gloriouser. Julie sang bkup for emmylou. Buddy a big singer-songwriter in his own right & doing the rodney crowell thing w/julie. btw these 2 use more tambourines than I have ever heard except under a tent. You are warned.
Wrapping myself in this "americana" vibe like a cozy shroud. More, please
Agreed. He definitely left his mark on this one.
but this version is brilliant
I agree--Emmlou is our national treasure. Can't really say she is underrated bcs she has collected many, many accolades. I hope the next one is at The Kennedy Center and it is The POTUS hanging the highest honor we can bestow on an artist around Emmylou's neck.
Oh, and yes, Daniel Lanois seems a blessing to any artist fortunate enough to employ his talent.
but this version is brilliant

.... a master production by Mr. Lanois
I never knew she had such a lovely pair of eyes.
You can almost go down the line and no mater who the artist is, if Daniel Lanois produced it, it will be good.

A wrecking ball is a large metal ball hung from the boom of a crane and swung into a building to knock it down. It's purpose is destruction or demolition. You do NOT want to be in it's path.
It is also the name of the Miley Cyrus song and video that caused such a "controversy" recently.

He put his unmistakable stamp on this album-- in a good way.
Nice

RIGHT SAID FRED!

Agreed. I love that version.

Lovely music Bill is playing all afternoon!
Envyenvyenvy. What a great line-up! I hope if you get the chance to do it again, you'll post pictures and copious comments about the whole event.
Willie Nelson also does a great cover of Pancho and Lefty... it's a duet with Merle Haggard(?) i think

"Drop Dead Gorgeous! Even after all these years! and a voice thats perfectly clear and strong. Thank God for Emmylou - she's an angel"
"I've seen Emmylou play live twice and both times were amazing experiences. angelic voice. A superb body of work. Thank you Emmylou."
And a Heart of Gold

boring
Each to her/his own but it seems that opinion is pretty well in the minority in these posts. Personally I love almost everything she has ever done from way back to her newest.
speaking of Brandi Carlile, I just saw her live. UNBELIEVABLE. She covered Folsom Prison Blues...so good! Wish RP would play some Brandi!

Entirely agree.
With unabashed adulation
she floors me each time i hear her.
