Tuck me in
I need to sleep now
I need dream how
I used to dream
Look me in
Look me in the face now
Help me believe how
I used to believe
Now do you see how
They're in the margins
Below and up above
I'll see now
How life wins
When all that's left is love
Rope me in
Lasso my heart, love
Loosen my soul, love
Spirits and dreams
Hope begins
Right at the start of
The search for the gold, love
In the driving rain
Now do you see how
We're in the margins
We're below and up above
I see now
How life wins
When we're all that's left is love
We're all that's left
Of love

I love me my Echo. This was recorded 25 years after their debut and it still sounds fresh, yet at the same time Echo-y.
I always enjoyed the 80s iteration of Echo & The Bunnymen, and had no idea how solid their later stuff was 'til I started listening to Radio Paradise. Not sure how I missed it. So thanks for that!

What a beautiful, and beautifully understated, song.
The "underwater" effect and the incredible auras thrown up in the atmosphere of this song never fail to impress me! a nice one by them

I think I've noted on this thread before: this fine track seems like it got off the musical trend train in about 1989. I constantly confuse it with songs from that era.
TIL 'eBow'
Haven't heard this one in 4 years. love it!
New(er) Bunnies, cool
This is quite possibly my favorite E&TB tune. Feels good on a Sunday.

Check out Bill Nelson as he is possibly the finest user of the ebow, no concidence that he produced Big Country and that Stuart Adamson was a big admirer. Shame that Bill continues to overlook his namesake.

At first I thought it was some obscure U2 song then I thought it sounded a bit like Coldplay. Curiosity aroused I had to walk over to the computer and look at "Who's Playing" - Echo and The Bunnymen! You live and learn every day! Well done Bill - you got me there!
When did they start sounding U2?

Just read a recent piece based on an interview with McCullogh.
Thoughts:
1. Can't wait to buy and listen to Ocean Rain
2. Dude didnt want to play the game - and become big in the US - too bad for me as a resident of the US
3. Just because U2 knew how to play the game doesn't mean their music wasn't great.
4. Like everyone else, you make your decisions Ian and you live with them - don't go slogging others that took a different path
5. Comment on their music - their performances - that's always fair game
I love U2 and am ready to love Echo

I've heard this before, didn't know who it was. A recognizably '80s style, but also kind of timeless. I like it. It's a 7.5. RP doesn't have that number, but I just served it up. This is better than a 7 but not quite in the elevated 8s. It's a bit of a downer — the 80s are gone. Sometimes they and the music sucked, but really, who prefers '12?

all about the experiences...
discovered U2 and Echo around the same time circa 1981/82. Completely changed the way I listened to and thought about music. Crocodiles, Porcupine, Heaven up here and Ocean Rain mark the tempo of my college years. If you have not listened to those four albums give them a try. Anything after Ocean Rain is marginal (pun intended) a few songs like this one, Evergreen and others notwithstanding.

There is always the greatest hits album which is very good overall too "Songs to Learn and Sing" and I recently saw a new greatest hits called: "The Very Best of...." (but I'm not familiar with that one...) They are a pioneering band from the early 80's and worth digging into if you never have!

I really like this song - however, the production and vocals seem a tad lifeless to me. I once heard a live version on Fabchannel (long gone... sigh) that was quite magical.
From Fleetwood Mac to Echo and the Bunnies...priceless and only on RP.

Got a large load of early 90's alternative yesterday. My tolerance is waning.

Funny how your views of a singer influence your liking, or not, of their work. I used to semi-like this number, maybe a 6, then I saw the Bunnymen at Loopallu 2008 and the lead singer was such a petulant, spoilt, unprofessional wanker that I walked out with many others, and since then I think of him whenever I hear the Bunnymen. Sad, I guess, but he really was an awful tit.

The track "Of a Life" is noteworthy because the chorus has the line, "I want a song to learn and sing / of a life requited", which name-checks their 1985 compilation album Songs to Learn and Sing.
I think I'm coming close to upping my vote from 9 to 10.

Chronologically, Ian McCulloch predates Chris Martin. They do sound a bit alike. Don't know who either of them thinks they are however.

You just reminded me -- listening to an Oldies station a couple months ago, I heard a song that sounded VERY similar to Creep. Like, there's absolutely no way Radiohead wasn't *strongly* inspired by the song -- same bass line, same chord progression during the verse. Don't get me wrong -- Creep is a much better song. . .but its originality was strongly challenged for me. . .
