You can write your tunes with rhythm and blues as your alibi
You can sell your soul and lay the blame all on the passers-by
You shake your body on the TV screen
It seems to me, you'd try anything twice
And swing it out and use it as your aphrodisiac
You can give it to me, to me
Plain to see that I'll give it you back
You let it flow, let it go, there's nothing to it
Anyone can try anything twice, try anything twice
Chasing after stories that have already been told
Could not look old Son House in the eyes
Unaware you carry such a fragile load
But I've got yours, and you've got mine
It's a rhythm and blues alibi
La la la la la la la la la la laaa..
You can take a trip through your juke joint smoke-filled paradise
You can give it your all, 'cause you are walking a fine, fine line, la
You shake your booty on the TV screen
Seems to me, you'd try anything twice
You'd try anything twice
Well let me hear you now..
Chasing after stories that have already been told
Could not look old Son House in the eyes
Unaware you carry such a fragile load
And I've got yours, you've got mine

La la la la la

I love how with this band, they have so many different sounds and styles, and all of them feel effortlessly cool and super-groovy!
Just a hint of Fearless in places. But I like it.
I may have posted this on a different Gomez tune, though seeing the Wiki page reminds me that I'm slack-jawed to see they're a British band. Maybe it's the name, or the sound, the Operation Aloha connection, his voice, it all screams American to me.....I guess we really are cousins, eh? Long Live RP and all of HUMANITY!!
Oh...i'll go +1 to 8 on this one, not my favorite Gomez track though I'm a big fan of their work from what I've heard on RP.

Bill, thanks for turning me on to this awesome band. Never heard of them before I stumbled on to this amazing station.
Maybe this means something.

My favourite Gomez song and they sure have some crackers
I like Gomez. I LOVE Gomez when Ben Ottwell sings the lead.

"How We Operate" was first song of theirs that I heard. They played at Jazzfest in New Orleans some years back and this song was on a 'Fest compilation CD.
Love hearing them on RP.

Great transition from Lee Michaels, blues. Something really 60's about this band, even as they are of this moment. Don't quite understand it but I like it.
Some sweet guitar tone on this track.

I agree, they may be the kings of the hit and miss band. Some of their songs are wonderful and some of them are horrible!! Makes you wonder how can the same band achieve both of those extremes?
Ben Ottewell is singing the chorus on this one, that other guy sings the verse. I don't think any person has ever liked a song just because another person likes it. It does not work that way. I'd say this is a remarkable piece of song here. One of the best evahhhhhhhhhhh!

I had to check this song because I thought it might be Eddie Vedder with Gomez....I like the voice!

Pretty much everything off the new CD falls into the horrible category unfortunately.

Every time I hear a Gomez song, they sound like somebody different. This one has shades of Ray LaMontagne. Oh, okay. Once I win the lottery, I'ma have to get me some Gomez, too.

This guy's voice annoys me almost as much as Eddie Veder's. Ouch!

The guitar riff in this song is a great followon to "Save it For Later" from the English Beat.
This is one of my top 20 songs of all time. 10

Gomez is another band that really shines live. If you like their recordings at all they'll blow you away in person.
Love it. Thanks RP!
Another great tune from Gomez.

Bumped it to a 9. Couldn't explain why, but that's okay too.

Well, after listening to "How We Operate" again (and again) and again, its starting to really shine as a musical masterpiece for most of the tracks. Still not as good as the earlier albums (as I've stated again (and again), but not a bad compromise. Bill sure loves these guys!
Hmm. I'll have to give How We Operate another chance perhaps. So far it just hasn't grabbed me the way In Our Gun or this one has.

Wow, following Save it For Later with one of my top Gomez tunes. Lucky us.
Thanks Bill!

I'm sure glad Bill loves Gomez, because I need my daily dose. If I don't get some Gomez on RP (or even if I do), I'll get it at home after work!
Even after reading the lyrics I'm not sure exactly what the message is, if any. But any song that mentions Son House is aces with me.

I'd agree with Split the Diff, but How We Operate is their best. They've stripped away the synth/dubbed noise and just play it raw. It might not have the beat per minutes of their earlier work, but I think it shows a maturity that many bands never find. Plus lyrically its their strongest complete set of songs to date...IMHO

Yeah, it is kind of a crybaby song isn't it. Reminds me of crybaby REM somehow.

This album, along with In Your Gun and Bring it On are the best that Gomez has put out. Split the Difference and How We Operate seem to lack some of that special energy that the early albums possess. Oh well, better to have made great music for a while than to not have made it at all.

I am so glad I finally got to see them.
Good moods, good performances, good humor, good music, good excitement.
Good luck with a better DJ, btw.
(The New Pornographers, the Raconteurs, and the Flaming Lips were spectacular, too.)
What a line up, lucky you I love ém!

yeah, you should have seen him at their show in Sac. Up in the front, all googley eyed and practically drooling on Liam's feet. It was pretty embarrassing considering I had on my RP shirt and all.

Thankfully many of us are having the same love affair. Best DJ/radio anywhere, one DJ or not!

I had to bump this one up to an 8.
nice little acoustic jam.
I like when his voice goes to the 'third day' style in the chorus.
Very nice indeed.
Never liked Gomez much, even though I admit they are excellent musicians, but this song is nice.
I have all of Gomez' other more recent albums. Didn't know this one existed. Good tune!
Gomez is one of the best bands to emerge in the UK for a number of years, they seemed to have spent the last few years trying to break America so we see precious little of them in the UK.
If you after a cracking live album Out West is pretty good especially their cover of Nick Drakes Black Eyed Dog coupled with their track Free To Run. Best listened to with the volume up and your eyes closed.
I have found it on the playlist under the Album title Live in Australia, Not one I can find. Is it a bootleg?
If you ever come across this single, it also includes an acoustic version, which I think is even better--more energy and more heartfelt, methinks.
sold.
I'll try anything twice.
one of my favourite albums of all time. the tracks 'Bring it On', 'Fill My Cup' and 'Devil will Ride' are all worth checking out.
FOr those who plan to order, try and get the double CD with the Machismo EP. Well worth a few extra $$

While you're at it, you might also want to get "Bring It On", which is the better album, IMO. This album has some of the best Gomez tracks ("Revolutionary Kind" especially), but suffers from some weak filler tracks, while "Bring It On" is strong pretty much all the way through. It's still well worth getting, though, despite my caveat.
(Assuming you're talking about buying the album.)
I may have to go out and buy this one.
Nice upload. Thanks.
Ha! Rebecca added my upload right away, without putting it through LRC.
One of my favourite Gomez tunes. Hope y'all like it.
