Been kickin' sawdust
In these clothes
For a blue moon
And a red nose
The boys will put 'em up
And tear 'em down
We'll wash away
The dirt
Just a glass a day
Ain't gonna hurt
Pretty soon we'll move on
Out of town

We pass them by
Across the plains
We don't even try
To catch the names
It's supper-time and their kids
Are home from school
They draw the shades
On their shops
While we go a'checking
Through the props
And putting on the paint
To play the fool

Then we're rollin' on
Rollin' on
Feeling, better
Than we did last night
Rollin' on rollin' on
It's hard some times
Pretty much it's alright

I'll go soft shoe
When it rains
I'll go shuffle through
The aches and pains
Mr. young at heart
That's what I try to be
They all laugh
And cry
They get to feeling better
And that is why
If it was good for you
Truly it was good for me

Then we're rollin' on
Rollin' on
Feeling better
Than we did last night
Rollin' on rollin' on
It's hard sometimes
Pretty much it's alright

I had just learned how well these two voices would harmonize.  Very cool.
This is a beautiful collaboration. Two uniquely talented musicians with warm and honest lyrics.
"It's hard some times
Pretty much it's alright"

Yep

Regarding the Robert Plant and Allison Krause comparison. Yes, I'd bet on Knopfler and Emmylou in any sort of fight but I'd love to see Allison Krause get in a few good licks.  Darn it........ She's got a pretty sweet voice too!
2 of my favorites

Ditto today.

I'm headed to Indy to see MK tomorrow night. :-)
But Emmylou is on tour in California, so I doubt she'll be dropping by. :-(

:-)
Each time I hear MK on RP I feel some irritation for the fact that his forthcoming concert in Uppsala next summer is Sold out since months ago, and I am off {#Frustrated}
Great duet by the way!

Bumping this to a solid "9".
Neat bass line by either Dan Dugmore or Glen Worf—both great stylists.
This is good one, too!  {#Umbrella}
Okay I really do need to get some work done.  Good set.

Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris - Rollin' On
John Lee Hooker - Spellbound
Bonnie Raitt - Give It Up or Let me Go

Interesting point

Knopfler/Harris collaboration is desert-island worthy, IMHO

Page / Plant is good, but this is great...

Plant can't hold a candle to Knopfler, while Krause is a wee bit better than Harris.

I'd like to hear Knopfler/Krause get together.
Emmylou and Knopfler ... like a great meal in Rome, or great cannabis in Amsterdam, hard to go wrong. 8
Sure sounds the it was inspired by The Boss.
{#Sleep}
I have "All the Roadrunning" in my player currently - just finished listening to "Beachcombing" for the fifth time, and I can't wait to hear "This Is Us."  I LOVE this CD.

guess it's not gonna turn around tonight after all. i'll see ya tomorrow RP.
Great tune, great mood... great artists. Regarding voices, it's another story... but this deserves a big 8.

I was sorry I missed these two when they came through town. I bet that was a cool show.

Another time - my saccharine cheese needs minding.

Yes, sorry, I must have been in a bad mood when I wrote my original comment, as this song has grown on me somewhat. And no, it's not C&W, but deffo country, though at least there's no blasted steel-guitar-in-the-lap twanging or lachrymose melodrama. 7 from the repentant Nottingham jury, though it is still a little on the cheesy side...

Another 10, Bill you are killing me, but softly!
Pleasant. This is the amount of Mark Knopler's voice I like. It's perfect the way it's used when he's supporting another vocalist. Great stuff.
Very nice!
I wouldn't really describe this as Country & Western, first of all.  And second, it's hardly saccharine.  It's entirely bittersweet.  "Feeling better than we did last night" is hardly the peak of joy.

Great...

Saw them at the Ahoy in the Netherlands during the tour... I must be honest, Emmylou's singing isn't always in key but her voice is one of a kind...

This is one of my favourite tracks of this album...

I suppose angels sound like whatever you want them to sound like. My angels do not sound like Emmylou.

It's ok.
Emmylou is a bit piercing.
I'd prefer Allison too.
Mister Young-at-Heart, that's what I try to be...

Great stuff
Goosebumps . . . again!
10 is the only true value for this track
only complaint, too short.........

{#Yes} Emmylou makes me go weak at the knees

Love this album end to end. It's realistic about the "human condition," including aging and the passing of time, without being at all maudlin. If anything, joyful.

Thanks RP for yet another great segue! (from John Lee Hooker).

Two of the most talented performers of this or any era. Mr. Knopfler has a crisp distictive guitar style, and Ms. Harris' voice could bring emotional import to a grocery list. ANYTHING off this album starts at an 8 for me! c.
Emmylou fans, Emmy sat in with Counting Crows at Telluride B-Grass this year and did a version of "Return of the Grievous Angle" Its available at tapers.org for ftp download. A must for all fans the lovely Emmylou Harris. A true goosebump moment.
Nice!!!
AAHHH......
Killer! If Mark and Emmy ain't enough, fabulous bass work as well.

I bought this album a few weeks ago and I really like most of it. There's a couple songs with what I consider stupid lyrics and I need to check the liner notes to see who wrote those. I kinda LIKE Old Pigweed.

Thanks RP. I had only previously heard one song from this album.
play it again
Emmy Lou is a Piece of Paradise.......... Always was................ Since Graham Parsons...........& before
Emmylou carries this song completely. Her voice is so melodic yet just a touch haunting. I could listen to her sing with anyone.
I love this entire CD

I think this track is quite OK. But it's nothing compared to other tracks that Knopfler delivered during the years. Just compare it to the album 'Sailing to Philadelphia'...

Saw Emmylou at Strawberry music fest down in Yosemite years ago. She just keeps getting better and better. Mark adds a whole bunch too! Class act!!!
It's not the best song on this album. I prefer This is Us and If This is Goodbye.
This is SO GOOD !

I've always thought that they were traveling entertainers, with a circus or something similar, and that it's set in a slightly earlier era. Haunting music, though, and excellent.

This is a really compelling tune, I'll be looking for more here at RP

I may have to look into buying this CD.
Even as a Knopfler enthusiast and with a growing fondness for Emmylou, I've held off buying this disc. This, the third or so cut I've heard comferm this is a purchase that will happen this evening.

I am totally with you. I guess whether you and I like Emmylou depends on what genre she is singing under - country, pop, crossover. And Mark being on the track is very effective too. I am not big into country, but there is a new "pop-country" group called The Wreckers, consisting of Michelle Branch and Jessica Harp and their sound is amazing. Not fully country and not fully pop music either. (Their first album is due out in 7 days! Can't wait for it!)
You just described alt-country. And you would be correct in fitting this album into that genre.
