Oh, yeah
Ziggy played guitar
Jamming good with Weird and Gilly
And the Spiders from Mars
He played it left hand
But made it too far
Became the special man
Then we were Ziggy's band
Ziggy really sang
Screwed-up eyes and screwed-down hairdo
Like some cat from Japan
He could lick 'em by smiling
He could leave 'em to hang
They came on so loaded, man
Well-hung and snow-white tan
So where were the spiders
While the fly tried to break our bones?
With just the beer light to guide us
So we bitched about his fans
And should we crush his sweet hands?
Oh
Mm-hmm
Ziggy played for time
Jiving us that we were voodoo
The kids were just crass
He was the nazz
With God-given ass
He took it all too far
But, boy, could he play guitar
Making love with his ego
Ziggy sucked up into his mind, ah
Like a leper messiah
When the kids had killed the man
I had to break up the band
Oh, yeah
Ooh
Ziggy played guitar
He was one who's death rattled me; still does. Had so much left
Now Buffett affects me the same way
Thanks for everything, David Bowie.
David Bowie's talent = 10
David Bowie's infulence on music in general = 10
David Bowie's music (to my ears) =4 + or - 1 depending on the song.
He's just not my thing. Never been a big fan of the androgyny shtick.
Though this listener is probably long gone, I just had to respond. The "androgyny shtick" as you call it, was just one of over a dozen characters that David Bowie transformed into during his career. There was the androgenous Bowie, the hippy Bowie, the disco Bowie, the crooner Bowie, and others. He was a complete artist, he developed everything from the music to the characters, to the stage shows, to the publicity. I was fortunate enough to see the Bowie museum exhibit when it toured after his death, it is mind blowing to see how creative he was in every aspect of his craft.
I worked at a ski resort for the winter of 81-82, had a cassette of this awesome album and listened to it constantly. I was desperate to listen to tunes on the slopes so I bought this ridiculous contraption that was basically a small car stereo with a cushioned pouch to strap to your chest. I guess it ran on batteries which was enough to drive headphones. It actually worked great if you could get over the bulk. But I fell pretty hard once and it ejected the tape ;)
I know I had a Walkman soon after ... just checked and they were introduced in the US in June '80 but I certainly hadn't seen one or couldn't afford it. And I bet if the guy who sold me the strap-on knew about them, he was happy to find a sucker to unload it. (Hmmm - that last sentence sounds pretty weird ...)
Thanks for your story. Context is all, isn't it? :))
The "androgyny shtick" lasted for about 3 or 4 years out of his close-to-50 years in music.
This is in my top ten desert island records I bought this in 1972 and at least three times since in different formats absolutely legend <3
I listened to the album a few weeks ago. I had forgotten how good it was ; great songs, great lyrics, great musicians, and great production. Just incredible.
AND…
this song gets too much airplay on RP, imo. It’s just *meh* to me.
"he came on so loaded man, well hung and snow white tan"
and
"the kids were just crass, he was the nazz, with God given ass"
my imagination conjures this:
And The Lord came to Ziggy and said unto him,
"Thou shalt have ass"
And it was so
[.....] And I bet if the guy who sold me the strap-on knew about them, he was happy to find a sucker to unload it. (Hmmm - that last sentence sounds pretty weird ...)
I know this is response-necro, but my god, this made my day. Thank you!
Thank you Bill
It was not this but similar! Can't believe there was another model of this concept ... but I guess we'll do anything for tunes
Ha. This was my sweetest Crimbo present ever. Out with mates with a tape of "Slade Alive" and the single of "School's Out". Job done.
I learned recently that that "the nazz" originates in the poetry of stand-up comedian Lord Buckley:
But I'm gonna put a cat on you ...
was the coolest, grooviest, swingin'est, wailin'est,
strumminest, swingin'est cat that ever stomped on this jumpin' green sphere.
And they called dis here cat ... Da Nazz!
The poem is about Jesus ... of ... Nazareth.very cool link. there's also a link in the comments to a longer list.

Maybe David Bowie/Ziggy is, but I have a feeling that David Jones is still down here, afraid of Americans.
don't forget about the God given ass
Was it the Astraltune Stereopack: https://unofficialnetworks.com/2013/10/sony-walkman-astraltune

If you don't anything nice to say, then keep quiet. Didn't your parents mention this? Bowie is rock royalty.
rock on Mr Bowie
Yah, damn, now I need to hear it.
>>And it was cold and it rained so I felt like an actor<<
WTF?
drinking milk shakes cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine
don't think you knew you were in this song

. . . or "Five Years".
I think I saw you in an ice-cream parlour

What ever happened to Mick?
Sadly, he died from cancer in the 90s.

What ever happened to Mick? he was an OK player but not up to the other great players in that time period.

Yep. I give this a 10 though. Prolly the only Bowie song I love without reservation. He was a great showman, I'll bet, if you go for that sort of thing. I just go for the music. Don't care about the show.
You are late to the party. You should only post the "played too often" comment on the first/oldest page of the song comments, not the second.

Androgyny's fine with me. (kd lang is wonderful) It's the overall silliness of Bowie that I just can't stomach. Not my style and I can't respect it. I don't understand why he is still played.
Kinda recursive there, ain't it?
That's just crazy talk.
Actually, it was a thin white duck.
Mmmmm... *40* years, actually. Strange but true.
As a teenager listening to this, I found out that the walls didn't always filter out the vocals. The "TURN IT DOWN!" didn't always mean it was too loud. But damn, was it good!
I always thought it was making love with his ego
Jeez, you say that as if it's a bad thing. What have you got against recursion being employed as an artistic statement?
Somewhat Warholian?

Agreed. I'm so done with him. And this song is just overplayed and overrated. Even at 3.

Yes I got my ''OFF'' Button MAXED OUT
Lots of disparaging comments then about Mr. Bowie & crew.
The song? Yes, changed the music world.
Kind of the way "I want to hold your hand" changed the world. Though, not quite the same scale.
Made it turn the corner at least.
Wow, Zappa reference!
Nicely done.
No snow in August. But Halloween is not out of the question, Essex.

Jeez, you say that as if it's a bad thing. What have you got against recursion being employed as an artistic statement? I believe that was his point with this song.
So say the liner notes. Can't argue with that. Would love to hear this with the segue into "Suffragette City".

Brilliant song from one of the greatest, most monumental albums ever released. "10" doesn't do it justice.
Don't mince words, tell us what you REALLY think about this song/album.
Seriously, is there a rock n' roll musician out there today who doesn't consider this one of their influences?

YES!
Kinda recursive there, ain't it?
And this in of itself is what makes the song so incredibly awesome. None of the above attributes have anything to do with how great a songwriter Bowie is.
(please add Moonage Daydream)
But Bowie was the king and IMO one of the most creative guys in music.
Kinda recursive there, ain't it?
love this outstanding tribute to Jimi
Doesn't matter in the end i guess. It it a great song from a great album.
