Oh country down
Where I found my proving ground
All along the floodline
Wheels are turning around
The hills roll out like centuries
Pass by without a sound
Just a mile outside of town Down-river bound
Where the lemon-tea-sky fell down
A plot against your will
Is furrowed into your brow
Against your better judgment
It's all behind you now
Just a mile outside of town What's the use
Of being found?
You can lose yourself
In some good ground
In the weeds hiding
Down the river right next door
There's no frame around your picture
Just a view through my back door Time evermore
You just found what you're looking for
A tiger rose
Growing through your prison door
Reaching for sunlight
Can't see it anymore
Just a mile from my back door You could wake up on a lifeboat 'neath the sun
On a ladder up to the sky
You're standing on the lowest rung
Holding a lifeline
Using my best defense
Running in the undertow
I couldn't fight against Oh lay me down
Where we found my proving ground
All along the floodline
Waves are turning around
The hills roll out like centuries
Pass by without a sound
Just a mile outside of town

Heavy auto tune but I like the album anyway

I'm not a big Beck fan, but this autotune statement is complete bullshit.
great track, great album. Award winning. Just great

Really true. Have tried to like Beck and always listen to him hoping to hear something original, since he is good musically; I guess he has that in his genes. But what I usually hear is who he sounds like -- someone from the 70s here, someone from the 90s there. It's not even that he borrows from musical styles, nothing wrong with that. It's that the songs themselves sound like other people's songs.

Try this experiment: listen to Mutations (1998) and Guero (2005) and tell me who he sounds like on those.
This is the most incredible album...enough said.

You got a bit of flack for this, but in a way you are quite correct. Beck *is* derivative. Everything he does sounds like something that came before. Sometimes it's not even subtle. The stunning thing, to me at least, is the sheer breadth of his font of derivation. He pulls from fuckin everything!

And what's wrong with that?!

I was reading lyrics and looking at album art while the record was spinning and my friends were trading cards.

I imagine when other kids were trading baseball cards and riding bikes, this guy was looking at the backs of records and begging his dad to get him more music.

Why would he want to limit himself like that?

Sounds like a great time! That's the kind of vacation I love!

Happy Birthday, Beck!  Love that you're always interesting, even if not always my taste.  I think I own every album for that very reason.

Someone here is not as deep as they think, but it's not Beck.

I don't hear autotune
what makes you think so?

There's some multi-tracking and a lot of reverb on the vocals but I don't hear any auto-tune either.
Just snagged a ticket to see Beck at Red Rocks this fall! He's been on my list of musical acts I want to see live for a long time.
Ma, Répondez s'il vous plaît do I wait or do something ?
              Thy incubation asks for translation.
and I don't care about gene mutation.
                       so am I a drifting?

Nice..
A lovely album, it rewards with more listening. Wish I had even a poofteenth of his talent.
There's some real talent here. {#Neutral}
I like it when just about anybody adds a little twang to his music... even Beck.
