Or do you feel the same?
Will it make it easier on you, now
You got someone to blame
You say one love, one life
When it's one need, in the night
One love, we get to share it
It leaves you, baby, if you don't care for it
Did I disappoint you?
Or leave a bad taste in your mouth?
You act like you never had love
And you want me to go without
Well, it's too late, tonight
To drag the past out into the light
We're one, but we're not the same
We get to carry each other, carry each other
One...
Have you come here for forgiveness
Have you come to raise the dead
Have you come here to play Jesus
To the lepers in your head
Did I ask too much, more than a lot
You gave me nothing, now it's all I got
We're one, but we're not the same
Well, we hurt each other
Then we do it again.
You say love is a temple, love a higher law
Love is a temple, love the higher law
You ask me to enter, but then you make me crawl
And I can't be holding on, to what you got
When all you got is hurt
One love, one blood
One life, you got to do what you should
One life with each other: sisters, brothers
One life, but we're not the same
We get to carry each other, carry each other.
One (lone)
One...
Make in it, make in it, higher...
What an album this was. Achtung Baby and Joshua Tree were incomparable and peerless, in my opinion. And I attribute that to the magic touch of Daniel Lanois.
I find that Acting Baby was the continuation of U2’s decline into pretentiousness and mediocrity that started with Rattle and Hum. Some good songs on both. For me, One is a major misfire. Just boring. Oh well. To each his own.
20 years old! How can that be? And still hold the same potency.
GREAT TUNE!! ...sometimes greatness ages very well! ...as in this tune!
Truly a fantastic song, and a really good one to play in the car on the way to a show. The emotional impact is so very, very intense, as on many U2 songs, but the fact that my ex- and I shared such a love for them, and mutually adored this song, espccially, made it burn all the more when we ultimately split. U2; it's been the perfect soundtrack of much of my life...and RP is what helps most to keep it all going!
Long Live RP brother!!
Since my college days were in the middle 70's, comments like this make me smile. We all have those moments, and some of us more than one.
You only live once and we make many bad choices during that lifetime. Do not linger with regrets; recognize your bad choices, give them the respect they deserve, be thankful that they did not destroy your life, ... then embrace your future.
Are they flawed? Obviously, just like you and I, and they know that, and that's part of the appeal.

Wow! Just stumbled across this comment from years ago. I (like others I presume) had a very similar decision/crossroads in my much younger life that makes me wonder from time to time. What IF I had gone the other direction? No regrets but memories to ponder as we all get older.
I had similar situation to DaidyBoy back in college in the early 90s and this album was the soundtrack to that period of time. I've never resolved whether this song makes me sad or relieved about the path I ultimately chose.
U2 re-recorded the song as part of a duet with R&B recording artist Mary J. Blige on her album The Breakthrough. This blew me away and made me gain deeper respect to Mary J. Blige.
This is one of the deepest songs for me. At one time I spent a lot of time with a group of very close friends and something happened with a girl friend that meant we parted ways. One of those big crossroads in life that you look back on and realise that everything would have been different if I had chosen the other one..... This song was playing at the crucial moment, and I remember the time all too well.
Same, but for me it was "With or without you."
This week it's missing my dear grandmother and best friend who passed away this weekend 3 months shy of 100 years old.
True telling of a great song-it can connect to anything at anytime, and move you every time.
Let's just hope it's not "banging your two flintstones above your head" ;-)
Unfortunately, after today, it just might be... Unless we can understand that "We get to carry each other..."
I'm not sure a truly "reasonable" person would bother arguing who the "greatest band ever" was. It's a matter of personal taste and aesthetics, there are no hard, scientific facts or proofs. Qualitative information cannot really be measured. What logical or "reasonable" method(s) could be used?
songs ratings on RP ?!
What will it be in another decade or two? 'Getting your implanted RFID chip to glow?'
In March 2020 no public gatherings. All concerts cancelled
I hope that's not the future..
What will it be in another decade or two? 'Getting your implanted RFID chip to glow?'
Whatever it will be, one thing will never change. One will always sing to the other: "We're one but we 're not the same.".

Our you mentally activate the bio-luminescent layer underneath your fingernails to glow in the dark so you can just "wave your hands in the air like you just don't care."
My rating: 9 - OUTSTANDING

As others have mentioned DMB and TH do get some of that. And look at the comments for Suzanne Vega, Tori Amos and other female singer/songwriters. THEY are getting the full treatment ;-))
dennis_chary wrote:This is a fine
song-by my rating system,I give it a solid 7.However,with the exception
of "Love Comes Tumbling",so much of U2's music comes across as too self
conscious, as if Bono was more concerned with the appearance of anguish
rather than geniunely communicating the anguish musically. This song is
very well crafted, but it feels too scripted.

Hm. I think he does have a point there. I like U2, and I like this song very much. But I have to agree, there's something of what dennis_chary says in many U2-songs. A sort of trying-too-hard. Never heard it before, but now I can't unhear it. Maybe it's something to do with that album, I don't hear it as much in songs from Joshua Tree.

I agree
My rating is 9 - O U T S T A N D I N G
Thanks for playing this RP
Agreed. This is a terrific song.
I think U2 is a fabulous band and Bono's vocals really do seal the deal.
Some of the song structure is so simple but is SO well done.
(with apologies to all height challenged beings)
He towers over the chaps in Anthrax.

xD Best description of Bono I've seen in a while. :D
Definitely not.

In what way are "mainstream" and "music lovers" mutually exclusive?
Check out the comments about any Dave Mathews Band or Talking Heads song the next time it comes up. All the Haters make sure to let their feelings be heard.
Not that it's unwarranted in the case of DMB.....
Funny reply LPCity, I'm there with you on DMB
As for U2, I will say I'm not a big fan AND that this is probably the highest I've rated a U2 track (8) because this song seems so damn special to me....and keep playing what you want to BillG!! Long Live RP!!

Excellent way of putting it!
Now do the Bad joke. It's every bit as good!
"That's what I want,
for all of you to be One"
Thanks! :)
I'm worried about my future, I may be dyslexic.
I pray, let it be better days

I prefer Johnny Cash's version of Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" and Nick Cave's "The Mercy Seat", but I tend to agree with jazzdevil. Bono hasn't the greatest voice but he's very convincing when singing about tortured love.
Wow. Was it difficult for you to pull yourself away...(restraint exercised); to spend a few minutes scripting that comment?
Also, I disagree.
You say love is a temple, love a higher law...

Haven't you known that woman? I certainly have!
This is a damn fine pop song! Nothing more, nothing less.

My sentiments, exactly. Please see my comment above.
Yah, whatever. It's not cool to like U2, blah, blah, blah.
This is a great song, regardless of how many people whine about the band.
Indeed. They cry, they whine, and that's it. A lot of boohoo signifying nothing.
I would be willing to bet that this song has that effect on a few of us.
Imho the song is about trying to face the pain of not only a relationship, but a world if division and strife in humanity.
The overall message is to keep trying to love and to mend/heal/ over come the pain we cause each other.
Love that causes pain is not love it's longing. It's best to let it go if it hurts.
Not really
angry, and for whatever reason I've ALWAYS thought they were about him having a fight with his wife...about sex, actually. Ahem.
Did I disappoint you?
Or leave a bad taste in your mouth?
You act like you never had love
And you want me to go without
Well it's too late tonight
To drag the past out into the light...
That sounds like something pretty specific, and not very loving. (He wants it, she doesn't.)
Did I ask too much?
More than a lot.
You gave me nothing,
Now it's all I got
And, we hurt each other then we do it again...
I can't be holding on to what you got
When all you got is hurt
I like the song...I like the tune, but as I said, the lyrics, to me...well. This is no love song as far as I can tell...
Right—to me this is very painful, and beautifully written song about a breakup. Though I never thought it was about sex per se. I think it is a superb song, but it always makes me sad. The lyrics expand to cover "one world" etc at the end, but....
