Have I ever heard a JJ track that merits less than 10?! I think not.

I feel for you, but JJ's tunes are all under 3 mins  - except for Durango (only found on the anthology), where I think the 'Naturally' racoon turned out to be skunk (something a tad stronger than his normal spliff if I'm being too elliptical!)...

Rock and Roll just doesn't get any better this...period

Buy JRiver Media Center and use the built in RP streams which sound better than flac on a browser. Let it play and then you can hop around to all the songs that already played to your hearts content and also use good dsp peq and upsampling if you want. It's my favorite way to listen. This song is great too!
There's an error in the lyrics.. I believe it should read "Mama don't allow no peeyanna players in here"
Mama don't care but I want to hear this song again!!
just went to a Big Head Todd & The Monsters performance last night in West L.A. & you can clearly tell that Todd is influenced by guitarist's like  JJ, Knopfler & Clapton

Wait a sec....coulda swore I heard a verse of "mama don't allow cymbals to be danced on in here"

And listening to each instrument boy they all sound like they're having a blast....RIP JJ and LLRP!!
That put smile on my face
This song always makes me wish for a "Play it again, Bill" button!
The drummer blows me away every time by practically dancing on his cymbals.
Funny -
You said, "Dick Dale" at the end of this, Bill.
That he, "finally hung up his guitar and pick, and what a heavy pick it was."
!

I only knew this as a Sesame Street song "Oscar Don't Allow".  While that song is entertaining, JJ Cale takes this to a whole other stratosphere.  Once again, Thank you RP for educating me.

{#Bananajam}A great artist, with a great song
Seriously, it seems like yesterday to me that we lost JJ - and it'll be 5 years in 2 months....boy do I wish I'd been a bigger JJ fan way back when I was a fan of EC's JJ songs....maybe I would have had a chance to see this gem of a guitarist (and he sounds like he was a cool guy too) live.  Hell...I'm going 8 → 9 on this and LONG LIVE RP!!
Thanks for cheering up a dreary afternoon at work
I need a 11 for this song!
... and so are the lyrics.
This is fuc*'n sublime!

Such a great tune.  I listened to this old chestnut when I was a kid.  My dad had it on some old dixieland jazz record.  One year we went to see J.J. at a small place in Boston.  He started out with a couple solo tunes and then he segued to this tune which I recognized almost immediately.  He started out alone and then slowly each band member came on stage, verse by verse with a little solo.  Momma don't 'low no bass playing'  Momma don't 'low no drums etc.  Until the entire band was onstage at the end of the song.  It was classic understated J.J. Cale and it just blew the roof off the place.  I think that was the third or fourth number of the night.  There were a whole bunch of Cale fans there and then a bunch of people who became J.J. Cale fans that night.

That sounds like an amazing experience!  I love hearing about moments like that....when a performance transcends; becomes a mood, an emotional and unforgettable thing.
Wowwwwww, what a great beat!!
J.J. Cale always reminds me of my long ago college days.  I actually got to see him once at the University of Northern Colorado once.  Damn good show too.
Nice sound! Lifting my mood on Friday afternoon...
Play the French version please :)

That's what I'm talking about!
I like JJ and I like this but man, there isn't a lot of diversity in his tunes.

I saw Doc and Merle perform this and kick butt. I think it is a tune that really is meant for a live jam. I bet they (and probably JJ) did even better sitting around the house with friends.
Dancing emotocons! or whatever

Groovy :)
If you want a good French version, check out Francis Cabrel's "Madame n'aime pas" from his 'Des roses et des Orties' album - just as much fun.

Great!  More JJ Cale, please!
Maybe he did not have all the fame and glory within the general public/massess, but certainly he is one of the most respected and influential musicians ever. That is the credit that counts!

Wonderful music - J.J. Cale has never had the credit he's deserved!

As soon as I heard the first 2 bars of J.J.'s solo guitar riff near the beginning I knew immediately who was playing. What a distinctive style.

Just about anytime is the right time for J.J. Cale.

JJ I really miss you...thanks for leaving us such a vast catalog of music
Here's a young guitarist who you may recognize playing his rendition of the song:

J.J. Cale was a favourite with the FM radio DJs back in the early 1970s.

Nice to hear.

Well, I should have heard this song before now (thanks for nothing FM radio!), but better late than never. RP, you do good work!

This song reminds me of Bobby Boucher's "momma" in The Waterboy! {#Lol}

The hi-fi department in Harrods' in London was a good place to be in the 80s as a teenager- the staff were always putting on different, interesting music to test out various bits of high-end stereo kit (normally Bang and Olufsen, which looked so cool but inevitably sounded a bit sterile). One time a big Technics stack was on test, the top end model, pre-amp, graphic equaliser, the lot- everything to make 80s man, with big hair and probably shoulder pads, feel like he was getting all the bells, whistles and flashing lights that money can buy.

And they put this on. As a teenager with less than a fiver in my pocket, I was stuck. My brain said "I need this now", my pocket said this was unlikely. I abandoned my sister, who may have been listening to Tubular Bells from a Bang and Olufsen system (the staff were not all that eclectic) and went to and bought the cassette of Shades (which has one of the coolest covers of any album) from the record department, a move which I have never regretted in the slightest, despite the fact that it reduced my worldly wealth to a few coins.

And this is the song on the album that does it for me- a few minutes of utter bliss. I now seem to have it on cassette, vinyl. CD (and the Best Of) and I still never tire of hearing it. Excellent stuff.

And in case anyone is thinking that a Harrods' customer should have little pity, I wound up working there a few years later. Not something I'd advise- terrible place, and the staff discount still only takes things down to a price slightly above the rest of the marketplace. Not wise. But for my exposure to J.J.Cale, I do it all again like a shot.
  Nice story Catnip.
I like how some songs just take us back in time.
