I had a hard run
Running from your window
I was all night running, running, running
I wonder if you care?
I had a run-in
Run around and run down
Run around a corner
Run smack into a tree
I had to move
Really had to move
That's why if you please
I am on my bended knees
Bertha don't you come around here anymore
Dressed myself in green
I went down to the sea
Try to see what's going down
Maybe read between the lines
Had a feeling I was falling, falling, falling
Turned around to see
Heard a voice calling, calling, calling
You was comin after me
Back to me
I had to move
Really had to move
That's why if you please
I am on my bended knees
Bertha don't you come around here anymore
Ran into a rainstorm
Ducked into a bar door
It was all night pouring, pouring rain
But not a drop on me
Test me, test me
Why don't you arrest me?
Throw me in the jail house
Until the sun goes down
Till it go down
I had to move
Really had to move
That's why if you please
I am on my bended knees

Anybody naming their kid Bertha anymore?
Alright, Jerry, ya got me. At last, I'm bumping a Dead track to a higher rating among the living. 7 > 8. I learn more as I get older and wiser. I'm sorry to have taken so many years, at least for this tune.

Solid version of this song, great energy, tight sound for the Dead!!
After The Neville Bros FOTM - this came on - I thought for a brief moment - WOW! that's a great sounding Dead cover who is THIS! LOL.Neville Brothers — Fire On The Mount
Love. It.
Back in the day, there was a little bar in Harvey Cedars, NJ, on Long Beach Island, that had a regular Saturday night band, and they always opened the night w Bertha. a nice lively version, too.

Though BERTHA is my grannies name,
I find the song to be totally silly!
I think they did not take too much LSD,
I am certain they did not take enough,
if that song - and most others, I heard from them here -
represents their catalogue!
To me this is not far from true HILLBILLY music!
DISAPPOINTING!
Yes - I have to admit - I do not own a single GD album
they were and are absolutely not famous in Germany,
excluding certain West-Coast freaks!

Well here is almost 2012 and we are still not yet The Grateful Dead. Glad to be alive! Well, sort of ...

bump that about Los Lobos - but I prefer Jerry's version of any Bob Dylan song and Joe Ely's version of any Butch Hancock song - so where does that leave us?

Sigh. I'm old, I'm probably in the way, and I don't like the Dead, per se. Was never a fan, because I still think they sang off key and off rhythm. This album, in my humble opinion, is a 10, for me the best thing the Dead ever did. Combination of song choice and clean but still gritty sound (is that an oxymoron?) tops even "Live Dead" for me. I guess I mean that you can hear everything, all the individual instruments and everything, but there's still an edge, a swagger, if you will, to the sound which, for me, just wasn't there nearly as much after this point. Saw them live about the time this was recorded and they knocked my socks off at the Hollywood Palladium (Hot Tuna was on the bill and John Cippolina's band, Copperhead, opened, I think). "Bertha" while not my favorite tune on the album, is an easy '9' for me.
If this doesn't get your toe tappin' then I fear your toe must be broken.

No matter my grandma was "BERTHA" - this song is
a huge disappointment for those that connect

To me it sounds like mountain-men music!
Never-never ever would I think about playing it,

The Greatest Band In The Land.... those were the days.
I wanted to name my daughter Bertha. Wife wouldn't go for it. Had to settle for Shannon (from Jack Straw).
One of my favorite Dead songs.
Since RP finally played Paul Pena's awesome original 1973 version of Jet Airliner (yes, the Steve Miller Band version was a cover), I encourage Grateful Dead fans to check out "Venutian Lady" off Paul's 1973 album "New Train." Features Jerry Garcia on pedal steel guitar, evoking a strong "Bertha" vibe.

Some think the band name is ironic, but to the Nottingham jury it's simply descriptive. I've not heard a single GD number that rates above 2, and sadly this is no exception. They may have been trailblazers in their day and the dog's bollox, but their music hasn't IMO dated very well. This one just gives me a headache :(

I concur...saw Los Lobos last week at a great outdoor venue - they covered Allman Bros, Fats Domino, and Neil Young, among others, and ended the show with the Dead's Bertha. My 16-yr-old son was dragged up on stage to dance with the band during Bertha. What a moment - I still have goosebumps.

That would be just your (unenlighted) personal opinion.
I run hot and cold on the Dead, I went to their concerts frequently back in the day.
But DAYUM I love this song!
Best rhythm guitar I've ever heard.
There are other versions of this song that are more musically interesting. Not my favorite Dead song.

I'm sorry that you can't appreciate great music. And for the record, the 'scene' at deadshows was just icing on the cake. To any true deadhead, the music is and was the center attraction.

Thats the lamest gayest joke ever heard. I quit smoking years ago and love this. If you can't jam to Bertha it must really really suck being you.
Lighten up. I love the Dead and I think that joke is funny.

Did you actually use the term, "gayest" as an insult?
Wow, I'm SO glad that I'm not you - stuck in the macho seat, needing to feel superior, searching for a witty riposte and coming up with "gayest."
Insults are the last bastion of fools and the ignorant.

Radio Paradise is almost as good for the messages the listeners leave as for the music it plays... excellent :D

Q: What did the deadheads say when they ran out of weed?
A: "What is this awful music?"

The Dead performed this one probably 200 times, most of which are readily available in circulation. Certainly you can find a version better than the Los Lobos.

Vince died yesterday. RIP
The first track on my first-ever Dead album... Damn good!

You guys are making me feel old! Below are the remains of a ticket from my first Dead concert... Jersey City, August 1974. And even though it says "rain or shine", the show was actually a few days later since Roosevelt Stadium became a mud bowl after a steady rainstorm . Like most concerts I attended back then, I only have fragmented memories ... but I was able to listen to that show again recently to hear what I forgot via a download from https://tinyurl.com/39kv2
Hey I was there too, I remember you. First time I saw them was right before they went to Europe, 1972. Pigpen was alive then, will never forget it.

that was a hot day....90's....water cannons going on both sides of the stadium...I'll never forget the feeling when that water finally hit me
