Well, I'm standing next to a mountain, chop it down with the edge of my hand
Pick up all the pieces, make an island, might even raise a little sand

'Cause I'm a voodoo chile, Lord knows I'm a voodoo chile

I didn't mean to take up all your sweet time
Give it right back to you one of these days
I didn't mean to take up all your sweet time
Give it right back to you the rest of my days

I won't see you again in this world, see you in the next one
Don't be late, don't be late

'Cause I'm a voodoo chile yeah, Lord knows I'm a voodoo chile

Don't get me wrong, this is really, REALLY good rendition (a 10 from me), but do yourself a favor and see what he did with this song on Austin City Limits
This is another version from another ACL concert
Now that would have been a guitar duel, Stevie v Jimi. I bet they're jamming together somewhere pretty!!
Vodoo overkill!
Excellent segue to  Albert King's "Born Under a Bad Sign",  one master at another's knee.
Great as always! Stevie Ray plus a new RP icon.
Good day!

Tone 10
Spirit 10
Homage 10
Think I heard some of these licks  when I couldn't get Jimi's original out of my head 10
That strat has alot of miles on it for such a short life.

SRV put on a great show opening for Dire Straits!

I saw him open for Dire Straits at Varsity Arena in Toronto in the mid 80s. It's a smaller venue that seats 4000ish. He was unbelievable, as was DS.  Miss u SRV.
Thank God for great guitarists.
Jimi on steroids
Mitchell Côme Black 😎
Very good but not magic and less strong than Jimi.
Drums to. Everybody is not "Mitch" Mitchel
Very good musicians but less strong in fine than J.H. and M.M
SRV put on a great show opening for Dire Straits!
Stevie version is fun. You can kinda hear how he's playing that wall of sound more easily than you can tell in the Hendrix recording. Jimi blended it all so seamlessly it's harder to tell what the heck he's doing. And Tommy Shannon actually breaking a sweat.
No, I decrease to 5 - Decent
For me this is 8 - Most Excellent  :-)
10/10 all day long! {#Bananajam}

Agree. I've been transferred from some Joseph Arthur's junk to this stellar tune!

"Get some good audio gear, kids, not the $300. 7-speaker boxes of junk at Best Buy".  I absolutely agree.  There's great equipment available and you don't have to spend a ton of money.
This is a testament to the power of a brilliantly-played electric guitar.  The Jimi vs Stevie thing doesn't matter to me.  I'll just take this on its own terms.

just my humble opinion I would put Joe Bonamassa  on that list for today. {#Whistle}
I prefer JImi for this.
got to Honor the Man though, however you may feel, he sure could work that stick

That's largely how I feel. Stevie's great here but Hendrix so personalized this song with his style and riffs that SRV's version feels more like imitation than anything else.

FWIW, I think Jimi had the better voice. A shame they're both gone.

Joe Bonamassa and Sonny Landreth come immediately to mind.
If SRV is doing an homage to Jimi here, as I suspect is happening, it's fun.   As a "re-invented cover" it falls short.  R.I.P Stevie, I wish we could ask you.

Good old times... Still a jewel!!
Not a bad cover, but not a patch on that done by The Hamsters (https://www.thehamsters.co.uk/) who seriously hero-worship Hendrix. I'd recommend any UK listeners who're into Hendrix to go see them live.
Sorry Stevie, you only get a 9 on this one. See you in the next world.

There is no such thing as too much SRV. This song just flat out *rocks*
I thought it was Voodoo Child, not Voodoo Chile.
This just totally rocks my socks off.
Stevie "hey Jimi, what ya think" Jimi "cool man - 9 out of 10"
Bo Diddly called SRV the Blackest white-boy he knew. Muddy Waters had nothing but good to say about SRV Howin' Wolf panted
Oh yeah!
FFFFFFFF**********'NNNNNNN awesome. I don't normally go for covers but SRV, another master class - RIP Stevie
INCENDIARY! ROCK IT, STEVIE! Kinda cool the way Jimi took Bob's song and set fire to it, and then he left for the next level, and then Stevie took Jimi's song AND SET FIRE TO THE WORLD WITH IT! and then he left for the next level, too, and then Bill plays the songs AND TAKES ME TO THE NEXT LEVEL!
Who is playing today that anyone thinks compares to the skill that SRV had?
I saw a great local band do this yesterday! Turn it up!
That's what I'm talkin about....
I have never been a fan of JH's music. I do have a certain respect for it though, since many artists I like give it such respect. Liking everything SRV ever did leaves me liking this song (at least SRV's version) and furthering my second-hand appreciation of what Jimmy did for music.
Taking nothing away from Hendrix, but SRV does take this song to another level, IMO. Magnificent.
Pure, unadulterated dork waving. If this song were a film, it would be "Top Gun."
I wonder what the folks who are slagging Madeline Peyroux for channeling Billie Holiday think of SRV doing this and Little Wing? One person's respectful homage is another's shameful exploitation?
There's NO wanking going on here...! If this is wanking to you go back to your Abba <-X

I agree. Double Trouble was(is) one of the best rhythm sections in the business.
This song and Little Wing (same CD) are from a seriousley higher realm, so I'm sure Stevie's quite at home now. Our loss...
correct. this is song for guitar wankers. there is nothing wrong with wanking, and there is some good wanking going on here, but it's wanking nonetheless.

Just a guitar song!? That's like saying Muhammad Ali was just a boxer. That Richard Petty was just a driver. That Abraham Lincoln was just a politician. That RP is just a radio station. Heresy!

This song is a perfect example of a song I hate despite the fact that I like the genre and admire the skills of the musicians involved. This is just a guitar song. These songs are about one thing - showing off. Boring. Make a good song, then apply your playing skills to make the song sound good. And that's what I like :)
Saw him in the early 80s in Berkeley, and this song was a moment of total auditory bliss and transcendence. Having said that, I've always thought the studio version was a tidied up but relatively bloodless take on the original -- which, IMHO, is the rawest, fiercest, most powerful guitar playing ever put down on tape. If I'd never heard Jimi's original, I'd probably think this version was terrific.

Hey physicsgenius! Live up to your RP moniker and answer me this: Consider a cylindrical can of highly compressed gas in outer space. You know that if you puncture a hole in the can so that the gas can leak out, the can will start moving like a rocket, in a direction opposite to that of the leaking gas. Now consider an "inverse" problem in which a cylindrical can is completely empty (has a vacuum) and is inserted into a big tub of water. Also imagine the experiment being done on the space shuttle so that there is no buoyancy force that would push the can to the surface of the tub. The can is now punctured at one end so that a jet of water starts to stream into the can. In what direction will the can move and why?
There are two forces acting on the can in this situation: 1) The force of the jet streaming into the can, which will tend to push the can in that direction (as it contacts the far end of the can). Note that there is no direct counter force, as in the original situation. 2) The pressure differential between the slightly lower pressure water in the region in which the the water is jetting into the can, and the other sides of the can where it is not. This would tend to push the can in opposite direction of the jet. Off-hand, I would guess that force #1 is much more significant than force #2, so I say the can moves away from the hole (not towards the hole as suggested by other posters). By the way, as the moniker suggests, I think this is one of the best rock songs ever. I probably heard the SRV version before I heard the JH version, but they are both amazing. And for what its worth, KWS does do a hell of a cover also...
In my opinion, the only one that can do any semblance of justice to the man and his brilliant guitar work. Makin' it sing....
Is SRV a MALE trip? It's so musically tight, danceable, desirable in every way and I don't see the *ladies* commenting. Is it a slight in their musical educations? I couldn't really give it a ten, but it was hard not to. Yeah, Stevie!! LOVE YA.
Like a dog walking!
Hard to top the original here - but give SRV credit, he had the guts (and chops) to make a damn good try.
This cover gives nothing new to us. Yes, SRV in tecnically brilliant here. But that's all.
One of the things that sets him apart from most other rock guitar players is his incredible groove, which seems so obviously because he does it without any effort. It's something that comes natural or not, I guess.
5.5 out of 6.5 people agree this thread should be about SRV and not physicsgenius.
Yes and while that physicsgenius is at it maybe he can explain the Lorentz time dilation in a para or less, reading his comments is like sticking your head in a black hole. Shame he never swapped places with Schrodingers cat.
I have to say, that physicsgenius thread was an incredibly entertaining read.

Not a professional in the field, but yes, it would move inte the direction of the water..

Man, you just don't get it. I'm not talking about my favorite song. I've commented back to you on songs I like but also on songs I care less for. I'm talking about your tendency to attack anything and everything that you don't like. Everything that isn't exactly what YOU want to hear. And the vitriolic way you attack as well. Basically it seems like you want Bill to change from Radio Paradise to Radio physicsgenius. But then most of the rest of us wouldn't be happy and would gripe about how its become the physicsgenius version of Clear Channel. I guess I wish you'd just suck it up and not spend so very much time pissing and moaning about the 5.5 out of 6.5 songs that you hate. I know full well that you are not me, although many of your highly rated songs are mine also. To place my final point on it, it seems like you are attacking not only the songs but Radio Paradise as well. That does bother me. This station is better than ANYTHING I have ever heard!!! It combines all the best things about KGSR (Austin), World Party (PRI), the old KLBJ (also Austin), and every other golden moment I've ever had listening to the radio (minus the COMMERCIALS!!!!). Its brought me more new bands I like in the 3 months I've listened to it then I've found in the previous three years on other stations. Leave it be!!!

That ratio is about right. And I'm not you.
physicsgenius said... I didn't say it wasn't OK to listen to it here. Just wondering why you come to an "eclectic station" to listen to stuff you can find on any classic rock station on the dial. Because I haven't found another internet radio station that will allow comments, which I like to make, and occasionally I find something really good here (or hilariously bad, which is almost as fun). My response... I come to an eclectic station like RP because it offers me an eclectic variety of music which very much suits my tastes. Having clasic rock intemixed with power pop and classical pieces, and so much more is a hell of alot better than being bombarded with JUST classic rock all day. Especially if that classic roack station is just another clear channel clone. Plus, NO COMMERCIALS!!!!!!! I'm glad you finally answered my second question. I've been asking you for days. I won't say I like your answer though. It really seems like your prime purpose in being here is to make negative comments, sometimes just to get people upset. If that's in fact the case, then you are a TROLL. perhaps if you made positive comments more often or were less extreme in your dislikes it wouldn't bother me so much. I've noticed other folks who will say something harsh about one song but then say something nice about the next. Plus their ratio of high to low rating is far more even than yours. Based solely on your own ratings it would seem you only like about one song out of every 6.5 songs played. If RP was like that for me I would have to leave.
I was 10 years old when I firsxt heardHendrix' Vodoo Chile in the late Sixties and I was mesmerized by the power of music and how it coul deeply touch your soul (pimp) I am sure that Stevie felt the same way

Alright, its not my only question. I also ask what I always do. Why does this self proclaimed genius torture himself by listening to a station does clearly doesn't cater to his whims? He must be masochistic.

Because, where and who plays it has no bearing on how good it is. If the Mona Lisa was hanging in the Denny's you eat breaksfast at everyday would it be any less beautiful? Results 1 - 10 of about 69,500 for physics genius is stupid. (0.21 seconds)

Just for a frame of reference... He says "this kind of rocks" and still gives it a 1? Even if it "isn't your kind of thing" but you still think it rocks, you give it a 1? Now that you've been identified as a troll... why don't you go off and listen to WCORP or something like that?

He must be behind on his quota. I noted that he is now nearing a 1 to 6.5 ratio on his high to low ratings (high being 8-10 and low being 1-3).
