Mary was a friend of mine
Very close at heart to me
I had to let her fly away
Into the night an angel to be

Nothing more that hurt me so
Than to stand and say goodbye
She had always told me
?Son, this day would come?

And in her final days
In a weak voice she said
?It?s time together
Together that we pray?

Don?t you ever feel cheated
Coming up you had what you needed
Nothing in this world ever happens by mistake
Son, please have faith

Now the years have passed
I remember vividly
She said, ?Say with me
And the pain will pass?

Mary was a friend of mine
Very close at heart to me
I had to let her fly away
Into the night an angel to be

Into the night an angel to be
Into the night an angel to be
Into the night an angel to be
?Son, please have faith?

love this whole album. so good.
That guy playing the crap out of his knee!!
That wire brush just rubs me up the wrong way.
I've always referred to their stuff as "comfortable music". I bought "Primitive Streak" sight unseen (sound unheard?), yet listening to it I felt like I'd known it all my life.

Me three.
If you could arrange it, please, to have them play at my funeral—along with the Wailin' Jennys. Perhaps they could do some stuff together. I wouldn't know either way of course, but I'll betcha everyone else would have a pretty good time.

Ha!...me too...

I love their vocals--that subtle hint of gospel hidden in every triad.
Could use some cajun chicken and a beer....
Now I understand why I could never find this song in the Los Lobos catalogue..

Always look on the bright side.  But I'm sure there aren't many.
Amusing name for the band.  Quite a nice sound but it doesn't seem to match the year for the record.

Amen to that. They also must be seen live.

Forever grateful to my dear friend for introducing me to the Subdudes, many, many moons ago.  RIP, Bug.    {#Angel}

Saw these guys live back in the mid 90s and they can really cook. Got to hang out with them at the bar for awhile after the show, and they all signed my Annunciation and debut CD jackets. Great bunch of guys.

Glad they're back together again.

I saw them about the same time at Bumbershoot in Seattle.  It was absolutely amazing to see how much fun they were having jammin' away
I think I could listen to this again
Thanks for the Subdudes!!!! {#Roflol}
The entire drum kit is a tamborine and a stick.  And love that accordian.

They are a good band but they have better than this.
Cheesy.
Can't keep my foot from tapping.
No. They are a reminder of just how damn good a band Los Lobos really is. calray wrote:

I love that story - wish I'd been there under those stars Think they'll play @ NOLA Jazz??hanseric wrote:
My ex-girlfriend in Baton Rouge used to know these guys and hang with them a bit when they were in town. Once we were part of about 30 people who saw them play at a friend's plantation home. You have to picture them playing on the porch of what must have been the shack where the "help" lived. Anyway, there they were playing some down-home, just gorgeous music with us all sitting in the grass on blankets and chais. On the right was a massive row of tables with crawfish and a keg or two of beer. The 'dudes played into the evening and everyone pretty much crashed right there under the stars or on the floor of the plantation guy's house. A rare and memorable moment for me.
I'd have to agree: Annunciation is simply one of the best albums I've ever heard. The subdudes have a new cd coming out on 1/24 title Behind the Levee. I heard an advance copy and it is a terrific album. Can't wait to get one. You can see more about the cd over at their website: https://www.subdudes.com
As seen at "All the Time in the World": New year, time to straighten up some misconceptions: Jeffrey wrote:
And no drums--that's just a tambourine.
Not exactly. The percussionist, Steve Amedee, has perhaps the most unique drumming style you will ever see. He includes a tamborine in his method, but also has some more conventional equipment as well. Very minimalist though. His style is so different that about ten years ago they put out an instructional video just to show how to do it. String_Chess_Incident wrote:

Actually, if you like their sound, the CD I highly recommend getting is Annunciation. Song for song, this is one of the best albums I have ever heard. (I consider it a "deserted island" CD.) You will not be disappointed. ChardRemains wrote:
A buddy of mine swears these guys are THE live show...
They do put on a fantastic show, heightened by the fact that they play venues which keeps you close to the band. It's almost like they're playing in your living room. There is a very intimate/comfortable vibe between the band and the audience. lily34 wrote:
seen them twice. FABULOUS band. so much fun live. :nodhead: so happy to hear them on RP. did they regroup? i think they disbanded and then started calling themselves tinytown (or something) with the remaining members....but i'd love it if they were back to being the subdudes. does anyone know?
Around 1996 the original band did a farewell tour, tired of ten years on the road and in hopes of pursuing individual projects. A few years later 3 of the 4 got back together (all but the bassist Allen - IMHO the least critical to the subdudues sound) and toured briefly as "The Dudes," although it was clearly the subdudes music. {Historical backdrop: This is around the time that the Grateful Dead sans Jerry set the fashion by playing as "The Other Ones."} Some change of heart took place and in 2002 the band reemerged as the subdudes once again, with 2 new members recruited from their old New Orleans circles to replace Allen. peaches wrote:

Leave Michael Bolton FAR FAR FAR away from this band. Actually, don't mention them in the same sentence again or I'll track you down and smack you silly (as you should hit your "friend" with a wet noodle).

Wow!! That sounds incredible. I saw them at a free outdoor concert with Robert Cray and Shawn Colvin. Robert was good, Shawn was boring (surprise, surprise) and the Subdudes were fantastic. I had heard they broke up but have since gotten back together. They are very good live.

I really like this band and this tune. I was however slightly tainted when another friend pointed out that the lead singer often sounded like Michael Bolton.
For about a year I worked at this Cajun restaurant where the owner really liked these guys. This CD really grew on me while I was working there, although anytime I hear anything by them I start craving gumbo...
a good buddy of mine tried to turn me on to these guys, but I wasn't biting at the time. they're not bad, though. sorry about that, slatz.

Wow.. I did the same thing.
Yo, betterdaze, the subdudes are alive and well! Check it out I love these guys. Did y'all know that the "drummer" usually just beats on a tambourine for his sound? Just amazing.

I have their first CD. I bought it when I was with Columbia House because I liked their bandname. I lucked out because it is such a fun group of music!
Saw them at the Great American Music Festival at Winter Park (Colorado) a few years back. Stole the show from Lyle Lovett and the Cowboy Junkies in my humble opinion.
Wow, I like this. Have never heard of them Wish they were still around. I'd like to hear the whole album.
One of the finest bands to grace the earth.
it\'s too bad the subdudes aren\'t around anymore. this is an excellent song on an excellent album.

I resent this...not because you don't like, but because the implication is that this is country. I could be wrong, but this sounds very much like Southern Louisiana music (either New Orleans or Lafayette). But definitely not a country song, IMO.
I first saw this band at an old Texas dance hall called Cibolo Creek Country Club. I was spellbound. It was one of the most exciting performances I have ever seen. Six months later they returned to even bigger crowds In Austin and San Antonio. Then they were ignored by their major record label and received no promotion for their new CD. They disbanded. What a downer! Tommy Malone has tried to make a come-back. His first effort was a New Orleans band called Tiny Town. His second effort is the Tommy Malone band. These are OK efforts but they pale in comparison to the Subdudes magic sound.
