When the devil comes blowing through your door
You'll know there's trouble
And he's coming back for more
You better keep what is precious
Hidden under the floor
Or you better treat it so good
It will never want for more
But looking back in retrospect
Did you ever really get what you'd expect?
Trying to rectify
Got lost a little further
Well, you've been trying to justify
Find out how and from where it came
Devil was your angel
But it's not no more
The devil was your angel
When you weren't sure
Do I tempt trouble to break through all these doors
Just to put a face to the voice which always haunts?
To fight for what is precious, to know what's under the floor
If I could treat it so good I swear I'd never want for more
When I found my peace
There were still mistakes
However painfully your wearing every step I take
Trying to rectify
Got lost a little further
Well, I've been trying to justify
Find out how and from where it came
The devil was my angel, now I'm just not sure.
To travel as my angel there's always my whore (?)
Gonna take it back down
And I won't feel no shame
Till my dreams are my own again
Gonna take it right down
And I'll take the blame
Till my dreams are my own again
Here I am again
The devil was my angel, now I'm just not sure
To travel as my angel there's always my whore (?)
(To trouble is my angel, there's always more)
Maybe you're an angel
Try to remember you're an angel
Remember you're an angel
If you're not sure.
You'll know there's trouble
And he's coming back for more
You better keep what is precious
Hidden under the floor
Or you better treat it so good
It will never want for more

And sometimes you just go with your own style and to hell with what a bunch of amateur critics thinks.
Janis Joplin would be a good example of that. Imagine Janis with proper pronunciation and diction. She'd be Linda Ronstadt...
The vocals in this are part of the mood. Let it flow over you instead of picking everything apart.
Not everything you don't learn from lessons is good.

I have over 200 CD's and Beth Orton is the ONLY female singer in any of them.
Haunting voice. Love her.
I too have 100s of CDs, but I have loads of female singers. Beth Orton currently is one of them, but when I hear things like this, I wonder why... Monotonous, out of tune, slurred, in fact she sounds like she's completely stoned.

Really? You LIKE her voice?
To each his own, man, but I'd sooner hear a mongoose being run through the spin cycle than ANYTHING this woman sings.
I love it because she goes in between the lines and isn't scared of anything that can't be divided by 16.
try taking this in at the Carlu https://www.thecarlu.com/
then tell me you don't understand...even with the flu she ruled

I think this song is okay. But, that comment is a very funny.

Oof...I wish she wouldn't put an h before every syllable that begins with a vowel.
Sati-his-fy-hi.
An-ge-hel.
Gets old fast.
Not just vowel words. Ruh-hetrospect.
Being annoying earns her . . . a 2. (A tuh-who.)
Ouch

Quintessential Sucko-Barfo. Can only go up from here - yep, Outback/An Dro Nevez is bringing us back up.
very much looking forward to her new album.
Her inability to enunciate the beginnings of word bugs the hell out of me I know its a stylistic thing, but I would like her better if she lost it.
This song started and all my dogs left the room. . . and I'm leaving too.
Seems like all the Beth Orton I hear here is the same quasi-meaningful slow drone. None for me, thanks.
I generally like Beth Orton, but I'm finding this song annoying....and her tone seems a little too broad. Almost flat?
Surprising how this grated on me.

Does she live in Tahiti?

Beth is like an island malt - an acquired taste, but once you have it, it'll be forever with you, and such a winsome lass...
PLEASE make it stop. I'll do or say anything you want.
<-(
ponderous
Hmmm...
MONKEY
HONEY
now DEVIL...
I don't see the connection . Unless Bill doesn't cross reference his themes.
Very eclectic.

I just bought this disk based on RP. After 2 listens, I can't recommend it. So whiny! Every song sounds the same (but the first track, which is the one I had heard...) Hopefully it will grow on me. I give em ten spins, and if I can't relate by then, off to the used store they go.
Don't know, GolfRomeo, hate to disagree with a fellow South Carolina RP listener, but I like this CD.

I have purchased two of her cds (based on rp listens), Central Reservation
being one of them - I would have to disagree, unique voice, and a
refreshing lyrical rhythm - give it all 10 plays, and re-post if you feel
differently

Nice enough, but if I heard it twice in row I\'d sleep for 12 hours straight.
love that voice!
Beth Orton also does several really great songs with various \"electronica\" artists - Chemical Brothers, William Orbit, etc - all are extremely interesting.

Just ca-HAn't HU-andle this, sorry.
