Just below San Diego
Tijuana, land of broken dreams
Senoritas dancing in the moonlight
Flashing Spanish dark eyes
to everyone, it seems

They say "Hey, gringo
Can you take us across the border
Just tell them I'm your daughter
un poco loco

Down the backstreets, through the alleys
All the young men stand with pride
They guard the palace to the kingdom
Called Tijuana, the entrance they disguise

They say "Hey, gringo
Can you take us across the border
We'll work for just a quarter
On the other side"

I'm having an argument right in this moment with my wife... but this music now helps me to calm down :)
Manx has signed my cd of this for my maggies
Love this version.
Tijuana and San Diego are both Spanish place names, but not on the same side of the border.

Very

Now that song must have given Donald Trump the willies.

He reminds me of bacon.

You may not like the exact menu item, but anything with David Lindley on it  bound to be pretty damn good.

This tune has grown on me. I like it. Haunting lyrics.  Vocals seem reminiscent of Willy Nelson.
David Lindley's voice can be difficult to digest, but see him live at least once in your life and you'll never regret it.
sad but true lyrics  nice acoustic guitar.
vocals seem to make me think of Neil Young.  Uhnfortunately true ideas but not the best voice
soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ANNOYING!  {#Frustrated}

Going from The Road To Ensenada to this is going from the sublime to the ridiculous.

I like it and I'd kinda like to hear it again without the clothespin on his nose.
I didn't realize this was a JJ Cale tune!

That Manx version is the bomb!

This started out great, I even like the voice, but how long is it? Seems to go on forever.

That is why the album cover says 9 songs - "really long".  They know it too!  David Lindley is so classic.  He cracks me up as a person, but is an amazing musician.  He has played with so many great artists and that is because they know their music will only be incredibly enhanced with his creative, unique style.  Folks:  do yourself a favor and check him out in concert.  The venues he typically plays are small so you get to really get an intimate opportunity to groove with an amazing artist and be able see every finger pick he does.

Not clear enough? Ok. Tijuana is México. This doesn't sound mexican, not even close. It has a slight spanish air, and that's all. Sounds like those phony soundtracks they put on when they suposedly cross the border. As I said: clichés, and more clichés. Want another cliché? "Hey gringo, get me across the border". Some people think that every brownie on the other side wants to get in. Specially those easy latin girls, right? "Tell them I'm your daughter..." This is an offensive one. So, this song is all about clichés coming from ignorance. I think I was too generous with my 2 points. Sorry, I'll fix that... Alex

Wow.  That's cool and all... but I guess nevermind the musicality, and ignore the clear (to me anyway) tongue in cheek... to each his own, no worries.

I like it, but it's kinda repetitive.
Sorry Lindley not Lindly, over clicky fingers

Love anything David Lindly MORE LINDLY play lots!!! Happy Happy Play El Rayo Ex
I'd really like not to hear this song again. ¿Tijuana? This doesn't sound like Mexican. Not even close. There's another country that speaks spanish: it's called Spain. Clichés, clichés & more clichés...
Like a Lot! Oscar
Finally, this comes back around!
Buy the Cale version on iTunes for $.99 and know that you got the better version! Cale's delivery is more "matter of fact" which creates a better feel for the song.
Very memorable, very likable. An 8.

Saw Harry Manx perform this song live recently in Sydney - he did a great version. Not sure if it is available in a recording, but his Indian instrument (the Mohanveena) added a lovely flavour to the tune.
Yes, it is. It's on "Mantras for Madmen". Good disc.
Saw DL sing this song in Vancouver, then saw Harry Manx sing it in Port Fairy and his is a finer version, but perhaps lacking the grit of this track...... shorter, too.
Good point about the website. I only looked at Amazon myself.

Well, I love this tune but I'm not spending $35 on a CD, sorry. I wish it was available at iTunes.
Where? The disc is $20.00 on his site
Yikes! CD is pricey.
It's an ok song overall, but it does tend to go on a bit to long, and I can't help but think that David Lindley sounds an awful lot like Weird Al Yankovic. Heh.

Funny way of playing a flamencoish style to speak about mexicans, if you like the guitar, go find some true flamenco guitar out there. Not bad though...This actually is a rumba (the easiest flamenco "style", called "palo" in Spain but played very slowly...)
This song is soooo goofy. And yet I can't help but love it.
I've figured out this playlist. It's the noon hour siesta list.
Relevant, I'd say, given the debate currently going in this country. /not that this is a 'serious' song //fun in concert though

What the hey!!! That's was pretty bad..
It's cold and snow is coming...working on a Saturday....this song makes me feel like I'm in SoCal again. Thanks guys!
This started out great, I even like the voice, but how long is it? Seems to go on forever.
i've seen this freak 3 times and loved every second of it. deep diverse worldly sound
I saw David Lindley in LA not too long ago and he was great. What an amazing player!
My GF and I recently saw David on campus (!) at Iowa State University, in a tiny little venue called the M-shop. Maybe 100 people? Maybe 10 different stringed instruments? Hell of a show.
Gotta love Mr Dave and Hani.
would love it if someone uploaded the JJ Cale version
Perfect at this time o' the morning.
If you like this version you may love JJ cale version
JJ Cale did the original of this song. You've got to hear his if think this version is good.

UH! You're giving me the Willies. No pun! ;-) I'm gonna turn this up now and make that go away.

Exaaaaaaaaactly!
Just promoted this to an 8 from a 6. Judging from the other comments, it seems like this is growing on a lot of us.
Saw him at a small club 2 months ago for the second show and this woke up both him and the crowd to become a really strong set. He looks different (hard to do in roots music)he has no profile outside of the cognocenti (that be us!) until you see the people he has worked with; plus he puts together an act.......as in .....complete act.
I never thought I'd ever hear a song here that grows so much *inside* the song. When it started, I'd give it a 8, now I just cannot resist the 10.
Has Willie Nelson ever covered this song? I can hear him singing it pretty easily...

Heard this before on RP.....not this long version though...and I really like it. Nice laid back version.
Wow! Finally I know the title of this song. Heard it 2 years ago in private radio and coudn't find it. Thanx RP!
no me gusta
Excellent piece! I'm surprised
Very nice and interesting, grew on me, in fact the more I here the more I like.

Please, more Mr. Dave. How about Afindrafindrao off this disc? Beautiful and no vocals for those who don't dig his voice. Thank whoever's up there for Radio Paradise.

I really like David Lindley, even saw him in concert with his band. But this is just a little to repetituos.
Very Greasy....ROFL....What a great piece!

:nodhead: Me, too. Nice guitar.
Beautiful guitar.

Living in SD, I can really relate the social significance of this song. I don't find it boring and I don't hate this guy's voice. I gave it an 8 - most excellent - and I don't give many ratings over a 7. So there.
Diggin the tune.

Good until he started singing...is there an instrumental version of this?
Agreed. Also runs a little long for my taste, but maybe the length would be OK with just the guitars running the show.
What a great tune! I've never heard this song before, either by Lindley or J.J. Cale for that matter ...I have a pretty extensive collection of his stuff too and don't have it. I'd love to hear the original. This song does however, remind me of a song called "South of the Border" off an album titled "Barry McGuire and the Doctor" I believe this was the last secular effort by Barry (Eve of Destruction) McGuire before he became a born-again Christian singer. Has anyone else out there heard this McGuire song and noticed the similarity? :-k
i don't know why - but i just HATE this song. i can't stand it at all. it could be the way he says "border" - heh. but i don't think that's it. maybe it's the fact that it seems to drag on and on, or the fact that every time i hear it, it gets stuck in my head for a month... i'll figure it out.

By all means, be bored. This music, however, is not TEX-MEX.
Tijuana sounds like Farmingville, NY... except that it's where they end up upon CROSSING the border...
This song was originally written and recorded by J.J. Cale. Interesting version, but I much prefer the original.
Yawn. This Tex-Mex music is so boring. I thought RP was a rock station.
I'd like the lime tortilla soup please. It sure is hot out. Let's go to the beach. Tijuana....( there is no "a" between the Ti and the Juana. I'm one gringo that loves this one.
I dig it!
Music with a moroccan flair about Tijuana. Very interesting combination. Have always admired Lindley's guitar music, if not exactly his voice.
Guitars cool... then he started singing.
Insomniacs of the world, unite!
Best RP song imho
I could curse the devil (pimp) for his voice, but I'd rather thank God for his guitar.
Lindley is a fine guitarist, but when he opens his mouth he turns each song (in the words of his own album) \"Very Greasy\". Sometimes a lot of fun, sometimes (like this song), a bit more problematic.
Good until he started singing...is there an instrumental version of this?
Great song... and just down the road from me. I\'ve heard this song before and have never been able to determine who wrote it until NOW. Thanks RP!
dot works for a quarter. again. dot.
A bunch a guys sitting around drinking beer, playing the bongos....Not bad, not great.
last... few... songs... putting... me... to... slee... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Hurrah for Lindley (and for playing him)! I can never get enough of his amazing stringwork - check out his more recent work with Wally Ingram, and his \"world music\" work with Henry Kaiser - would love to hear that on RP too.
just down the street from where I live...
wow David Lindley. He did all that slide work on the quite famous jackson Browne Live album from the late 70\'s. He\'s a very good guitar player. Check out El Rayo X if I\'m not mistaken. Dot
Yawn...I\'m falling asleep...great guitar work though...
most excellent...
Wow. A long and depressing song. Or did it just seem long because the lyrics are so dire..? Nice playing from David Lindley as always though.
What an annoying song . . . barfo
Wonderful tune. Cheers.
I like it a lot, makes me want to eat Mexican.
Great cover. Did JJ Cale write this? This is the only other person I have heard do this song. I have since discovered that JJ Cale did indeed write this song. His version is excellent.
Excellent cover.
