It was only one hour ago
It was all so different then
Nothing yet has really sunk in
Looks like it always did
This flesh and bone
Is just the way that you were tied in
Now there's no one home

I grieve for you
And you leave me

It's so hard to move on
Still loving what's gone
And still life carries on
Carries on and on, and on, and on

The news that truly shocks
Is the empty, empty page
While the final rattle rocks
Its empty, empty cage
And I can't handle this

I grieve for you
And you leave me

Let it out and move on
Missing what's gone
They say life carries on
They say life carries on, and on, and on

Life carries on in the people I meet
In everyone that's out on the street
In all the dogs and cats
In the flies and rats
In the rot and the rust
In the ashes and the dust
Life carries on and on, and on, and on
Life carries on and on, and on

It's just the car that we ride in
A home we reside in
The face that we hide in
The way we are tied in
And life carries on and on, and on, and on
Life carries on and on and on

Did I dream this belief
Or did I believe this dream
Now I can find relief

I grieve

My favorite song from this often overlooked Peter Gabriel album!
My eyes are sweating now.
Yep, something in my eye.
Any song that can make you cry...
I can't rate this song... It is too strong for that.
Nada Surf
First Aid Kit (new Don Henley cover)
Eels
Peter Gabriel
The Cure

Bill - you are on fire, my friend!!!
My father in law died yesterday and I loved him very much… I too grieve…
Peter is like me..but with a lot more money!

MAY HE REST IN PEACE!!!   I hope this song helps you deal with your grief!

Great Tune!! I never heard it before.  Thank You RP!
it's a beautiful song and dang it just hits all the right feelings that I'm going through lately.

This song, until the middle upbeat point, had that sound, with muffled, extensively bassie-sounding drums.
The US album was pretty much entirely like this.
You either know what I mean or you don't.

I get it.

It's as though you are listening from inside the womb. The thwwwwwap/thwwwwwomp  of a heartbeat -  transmitted through water.

I totally get it.
Nice to segue from Kate Bush to Peter Gabriel.

Both tracks feature the same guitarist - David Rhodes - who also once played with Talk Talk. His solo albums are worth a listen too.
Not a PG fan at all. I think it's because he always seems to use effects on his voice.
Such a well constructed song musically and lyrically.  You could listen only to the music without any lyrics and it would deliver the same message as with them. A piece of art

A very difficult song for me to listen to. When I knew my wife was dying, this song would really hit me hard. The ultimate message, "life carries on," is strong throughout, but the end, "Did I dream this belief / Or did I believe this dream / Now I can find relief" kills me every time. Despite all that, a 10 in my book.

Wow. So sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing such a personal experience. Changes the song for me - maybe I never really listened before.
Godspeed.

Not all that interesting musically if you know Gabrel well already, but I love a song that just lays the hell on the line like this one.
I noticed the rating is 7.7-all those heartless haters that gave this number less than a 9 need an empathy infusion and a class in aesthetics.
Another PG? 'Slight' PG overkill here!
Love the segue from "Sands of Time" by Fleetwood Mac to this wonderful song.
For some reason I didn't have this as a 10 before

Thanks so much for mentioning this. I first saw Peter in 1982 - so amazing to see him almost 10 years earlier. Such a compelling performer - a real master on the stage.
One of those song that can only be sung by PG. His voice an interpretation is just prefect.
Goosebumps ... every time

I saw Genesis when they toured "Selling England" - it's hard to convey just how odd his shaven blue head was.  But the band was epically good.
Most of his solo work is hard for me to listen to these days. This song is an exception, as is his Passion album.

This post shows the strength of music - for every nay-sayer, there will be a story like this. Moving and emotional music. A simple post, but alongside the tune it brings a tear to my eye...

This is about his divorce... but it could be about losing someone special...

But life carries on.

We can all relate, right?
nice segue from Kate
I was a massive Genesis fan in the early 70s seeing them many times in Montreal. I feel Genesis lost its spirit when it lost PG. I never quite connected, though, to PGs solo works. But I still feel a spiritual connection to Rael in The Lamia I cannot explain. I know Rael and what happened.

1 hour ago, 1 year...the grief is the same - so beautifully captured. Genius.
Beautiful, moving.

So much for getting ANYthing done today. I'm charging this day to RP.

If I were ever in the market for believing in a god, I'd look no further than the man who has gifted the world with indescribable, boundless beauty and passion.

Is it Petty to say, "You Wreck Me"?

Nice follow up to the Danny Kirwin FM song, who just passed away this June.

Somehow this song seems more and more appropriate with every day that passes in 2016. No, we're not all connected to these famous names and faces that left the planet this year, but a good number of us have been affected by their work, their art.

To all the greatness that's left, I salute you…

{#Cheers}
Another powerful song from an equally powerful artist.
I know most people won't have the opportunity to hear it, but this album must be experienced in 5.1 to truly appreciate it. PG really pulled out all the stops for the surround recording, and it's the most atmospheric and engaging listen experience in my collection. The original format was SACD, so again I know it's not common, but perhaps he will release it on DVD-A or Blu-Ray Audio at some point. If you're a super PG fan, I urge you to track down a copy of the SACD and listen to it on a decent 5.1 system -- you won't be disappointed.
Not my favourite Gabriel song, but not bad either. But - this came up when I pressed PSD --> groovy. While this song can be called many things, IMO "groovy" ain't one of them...(even though it does pick up)
Oh how I love the song, the lyrics, the sound and Peters voice. Great.

Thank you.
Life carries on, it's true. With us or without. Without you. Unimaginable, unfathomable, unnavigable, it turns out it's ultimately survivable. When we learn to grieve. "Did I dream this belief, or did I believe this dream? Now I can find relief. I grieve."
A thoughtful and creative work. Perhaps less accessible than James Taylor's Fire and Rain, but similarly poignant. Grieving in different ways but the pain is as real.
How appropriate to hear this the day Prince died.

9/11 performance on Larry King.

I'm grieving, too. I wish I'd hit the PSD button faster!
Amazing the burst of creativity he had after leaving Genesis.
Oh c'est dehors debout!
Last great song of Mr. Gabriel?

In person, he's irreverent and a proud father (his daughter Melanie played with him on stage one time I saw him). Not quite the self-centered git he was après Genesis.

8 to a solid 10! Love this incredible tune. The simplicity of these lyrics grow so deep on so many levels. I notice how the 'grieving' begins in the song as slow and painful. As the tune progresses...it strengthens...much like time heals. Then the drums and percussion come in and the tempo picks up with harmony. As life is moving on and carrying on...and on. Yet we still grieve....just beautiful.

Well stated  Thank you ziakut!
WOW
I want to see him live playing all this stuff.  Not the songs that get airplay.  Yeah those are good but this wow, so much talent!
Miss you dad!
I have lost interest in much of his music, but this one never gets old.
singing straight from the gut-wrenching heart and soul..

Popmusic (and RP) should not be the same without PG
With Genesis or alone, creativity, music, voice are here , rare missings .....
Moved from 9 --> 10

And glad that that I finally feel and understand viscerally this songs meaning.

7 > 9.
It's going on my pod tonight.
Thank you, PG. A musician and composer from, of and for the heart, no doubt.

Everybody in my churches loves this song...

Nice, though I like other Peter better. His voice does it for me - that keening sound of humanity, a human soul.

Despite some of the snarky negativism of some of the reviews, this still ranks a 7.8. Not bad, Peter.

Saw him live in LA in 88 - transcendental show.
Up there with the best of Gabriel's songs
I dig the Phil Spector wall of sound vibe...it's the way we're all tied in.
Wow. About as awful as it gets. Horribly depressing lyrics, and screechy grating sounds.
