Day after day I'm more confused
Yet I look for the light through the pouring rain
You know that's a game that I hate to lose
And I'm feelin' the strain
Ain't it a shame
Oh, give me the beat boys and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away
Oh, give me the beat boys and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away
Beginning to think that I'm wastin' time
I don't understand the things I do
The world outside looks so unkind
And I'm countin' on you
To carry me through
Oh, give me the beat boys and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away
Yeah, give me the beat boys and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away
And when my mind is free
You know a melody can move me
And when I'm feelin' blue
The guitar's comin' through to soothe me
Thanks for the joy that you've given me
I want you to know I believe in your song
And rhythm and rhyme and harmony
You've helped me along
Makin' me strong
Oh, give me the beat boys and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away
Give me the beat boys and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away
Oh, give me the beat boys and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away
Hey, give me the beat boys and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away
Na na na, won't you, won't you take me
Oh, take me
Yet I look for the light through the pouring rain
You know that's a game that I hate to lose
And I'm feelin' the strain

EXCELLENT! Who played bass on this?
This song always reminds me of a sweet time I was makin' out with my girlfriend under the boardwalk at Ocean City MD. This song was blasting from the amusement park nearby. Think it was 1975 . . .
What a tune
Gets me every time
Gets me every time
This is my favorite version of this song.
For years I thought the lyric was:
Oh, give me the beach boys and free my soul
Oh, give me the beach boys and free my soul

1973.
Speaking strictly for myself -
"Music's where it's at for me. As far as i'm concerned - nothing else matters"
.
Dobie Gray - 'Drift Away', and John Miles - 'Music' say it all for me.
Music was my first love. And it will be my last.
Thanks for all the joy you've given me...

Agree with Bill's comment after song that we REALLY heard this a lot in 73-74. Even in central TX where I grew up. Overplayed to the hilt, can't listen to it today as a result.

This isn't a bad song but it's on the radio all the time...It's more of a big "So what?" I don't mind RP playing "mainstream" stuff - this just seems to be such a "classic rock" staple I don't know what the point is. You might as well play "Spirit in the Sky."

I can't believe Dobie Gray was born in the tiny (and I mean tiny) town of Simonton, TX which is just West of my tiny town of Fulshear, TX. If Simonton was Detroit they would no doubt have a statue. What a weird factoid...

Had that album! Oh my God, that one had the hits, alright. Second song on there was Flip Flop and Fly by the Downchild Blues Band -- still a winner after almost 50 years; and there was Spiders and Snakes from Jim Stafford, and Painted Ladies by Ian Thomas! -- talk about an 'eclectic mix'.
So many Canadian bands mixed in there (the aforementioned Downchild and Ian, plus Lighthouse, BTO, The Defranco Family ["featuring Tony DeFranco", lol], and the Stampeders), plus R&B and soul and even Blood, Sweat, and Tears.
What a brew!
22 Explosive Hits was better.

And to think that for decades I thought this song was a tribute to the Beach Boys
This is not really my cup of tea, but it's unarguably great.
This is great, thank you. Makes me think of a non-smoking Joe Cocker. I don't mean this as a crack at all, I find it interestingly strange.

A perfect song for these difficult times.
Damn, but that takes me back. Well played indeed!
Always I've loved this song; just pure, clear, not overproduced. 40 years old and sounds perfect.
One of the first songs to get through to me as a kid living in Texas. Came out just before we left to come home to England.
Love it; 10 every day of the week.

I hear it on my little bedside am radio (gotten from plaid stamps) back "the day." Soundtrack of my youth. How do I remember all those lyrics but I can't remember what I had for breakfast yesterday?
Not a fave by any stretch, but hearing it once every month or two in the context of what RP does is fine with me.
For some reason, I still associate this song with report card day. It helped calm the great foreboding that the day often brought the young teenager I was. Played on "repeat." Back in the day that meant getting up to put the needle back down. 8
I watched him perform on a super-local comedy/variety show called 'Tush', mid 80's(?). Hosted by Bill Tush, who got his start introducing afternoon movies (remember?), it was goofy and ultra-low budget. But hilarious. Jan Hooks (yes, her) was in the cast, and her genius was evident even then. Wonder if I could find tapes of it?
Still love this song.

Just my humble viewpoint
I like that RP plays a wide variety of good songs. The fact that other radio stations play a song is no reason for RP to not play it -- we're not listening to those other stations; we're listening to RP.
Whether it belongs on RP or not, or whether its overplayed on "classic rock" stations, its still a good tune, and there's no problem with having 3 minutes of good tune in between other good stuff, and a lot of eclectic stuff that may or may not be so good.
So stop complaining.
meower215 wrote:

I think this is what RP is about though - eclectic online rock radio. At least that's what it says at the top of my browser.
IMHO there's nothing wrong with mixing a classic or two with all the others. It's the same reason that I use "random" on my mp3 player.

Unditto. I think it is entirely necessary to play songs like this.
Just to underline the point, I can hear Bowie's Sound and Vision on 'the other radio' at any time, but I ain't gonna complain, coz there's more than just a few RPers out there who like it!! IMHO
So, there is somebody here that likes this song so much that they took the effort to upload it, rather than thousands of other songs infinitely better.
I could live the rest of my life very happily never hearing this song again.

The adjective eclectic has one meaning:
Meaning #1: selecting what seems best of various styles or ideas
So I must say that "Drift Away" seems the best of the 70's rock ballad/classic style....wouldn't you agree??
Amen to that! Of course, Dobie has the unfortunate problem of having had a very popular song with this one. It's a great song...too bad, huh?
