Take the way home that leads back to Sullivan Street,
Cross the water and home through the town,
Past the shadows that fall down wherever we meet,
Pretty soon now I won't come around,
I'm almost drowning in her sea,
She's nearly fallen to her knees.
Take the way home.

Take the way home that leads back to Sullivan Street,
Where all the bodies hang on the air,
If she remembers, she hides it whenever we meet,
Either way now, I don't really care,
'Cause I'm gone from there,
I'm almost drowning in her sea,
She's nearly crawling on her knees,
She's down on her knees, down on her knees.

Take the way home that leads back to Sullivan Street,
Where I'm just another rider burned to the ground,
Come tumbling down, I'm almost drowning in her sea,
She's nearly crawling on her knees,
It's almost everything I need,
I'm down on my knees,
I'm down on my knees,
I'm down on, down on my knees,
I'm down on my knees,
I'm down on my knees.

Channeling William Demarest lately, are we?

Help, help!! I surrender.  This is worse than waterboarding!
I really love this, always have.

..hitting the mark at an 8..

..on a side note: it'd be interesting to survey if the folks who don't like distinctive vocals are the same who gripe about sounds-like Tori (or whomever)..
I know many don't like this band, but I've always been a fan of Duritz' phrasing.
Don't know why people complain about them...
Their first two albums are more or less the only albums form the eraly 90's that I still isten to. Classics!
Even their 2008 effort 'Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings' is excellent.
Truely a great band, I think.
Me like very much!
This guy sings as if he were carrying the weight of the whole damn world on his back.

Whiny I'll agree with, that's just his voice and you either like it or you don't, but self-important? No.  I saw these guys in the mid-90's at Red Rocks, when they were pretty much at the height of their popularity.  Way before the show started, Adam was hanging out at the front of the stage signing autographs, chatting with fans, and basically just being a cool, approachable guy.

There were 3 opening bands and a number of charities at Red Rocks that day, and he not only repeatedly plugged the charities, he came out himself and introduced all the opening bands with a support and sincerity that I've almost never seen.  I thought it was one of the coolest things I've seen an artist do.

A self-important tool would've sat back stage demanding expensive champagne.

Though I've lost interest in Counting Crows' music over the years, I will always respect Adam for this and I feel like he needs to be defended for this thoughtless, unfounded accusation.

Thanks for sharing that, it's the kind of detail that puts a real "face" on the music, and gives it context.

I think this album still stands out, and has aged really well. Good stuff.
No, thank you.

Y'know, I have given VERY few "1" ratings through my years as a part of RP...but as I was giving this one a "1" I thought I'd take a look back through, just to see what company this song would be keeping. Lo and behold, there were at least a half dozen other Counting Crows songs joining this one in there. Huh. Clearly I really don't like this band or their output.

I agree with both of these sentiments, great album with a whiny self important tool singer.

Well said. I had hoped for more worthy albums but IMHO this was the only good thing they did.
Can REALLY do without CC!!! Never understood appeal

I agree...I actually caught them live once (unplanned) - did the singer actually wear a wig?

I like Adam's voice and I also like Billy Corgans voice and Neil Young too........... some do and some don't and that is just how it rocks.
I was told that this album was named August and Everything After because he was born in August. Kinda kool.....Just sayin'
I don't see the appeal....ho hum at best
I say an 8.

I've loved this band since the mid-90's. Such a contemplative, introspective, album this is.

I don't really hate this band, or his voice either, and it's generally not enough for me to change the station.  I just find this band dull and non-descript, as I do DMB.  It takes too much energy to actually "hate" them.  This song isn't that bad, but their cover of "Big Yellow Taxi" is an abomination.

Fine song.
Beautiful. This album is one of the CDs that 'stays' in my car. Others tend to come and go. Not this.
I'll admit that I'm a fan of (the much maligned at RP) Counting Crows. Hey, I like David Gray too. Adam and David. Both tormented. Both genius. I can't get enough of them.

Yes, same here.  The music is kind of pretty, can't get past his awful whining voice..............  Oh great, Neil Young is up next — he's the King of whine!

I think "plaintive" is a better description than "whining". It wears on me. But I enjoy them in small doses.

I like this song, whiney vocals perhaps, but it works for me.
no originality
I like this album, it is strangely appealing and good for when one is feeling sad and whiny, but I can see why counting crows kind of went nowhere after this. one can have too much of... his voice.
I saw them open for Sam Phillips in '93 at Deep Ellam Live in Dallas...
He was arrogant, saying "Buy our record, we're gonna be big!"
I have never liked them since...
This song is very moving and emotive to me, I can hear the whining and it's OKAY. I accept it as a valid human emotion, not that I always like whiney singing. - 8
love this song, one of my favorites

I want so bad to hit the mute button, but I'm afraid I'll forget to turn the volume back up and miss something that is actually good.
I like this song, but for some reason I feel as though snow should be softly falling outside my window ... too much MTV in my youth, I guess.
Love this song, love this album.  To each their own.

too whiny for me today
This is gorgeous.  The whole album is.  Well we're over 10 songs in today and Bill the incredible mixing machine seems unstoppable today.  I have promised myself to go shopping for food when a bad song comes on. Perhaps i'll starve?
beautiful, wonderful, haunting..
Trite?  Who said "Trite"??  OMGoodness....MANY things come to mind with this compilation but never the word TRITE!    This cd, while dark, the opposit of trite!!  Amazing writing....paints pictures...one of those rare cds where almost every single cut is amazing....
With a good singer, this might be a 6. Instead of a 1.
nice nice nice song, one of the best of this album, by the way, this album, the best album of Counting Crows....

I like to check the song comments once in awhile and post relevant comments.  I just don't get this thing about why people care so much about letting us know how lame his voice is or that he's a pompous ass.  You know, no one really gives a s@#t.
No one is forcing you to listen to or hang out with guy.  Give us all a break and take it somewhere else.

My favourite album! Good songs through the whole album and also the best produced I think. Sounds better then their other albums.
