Before all of this ever went down
In another place, another town
You were just a face in the crowd
You were just a face in the crowd
Out in the street, walking around
A face in the crowd

Out of a dream, out of the sky
Into my heart, into my life
And you were just a face in the crowd
You were just a face in the crowd
Out in the street, thinking out loud
A face in the crowd

Out of a dream, out of the sky
Into my heart, into my life
And you were just a face in the crowd
You were just a face in the crowd
Out in the street, walking around
A face in the crowd

Face in the crowd
A face in the crowd
A face in the crowd

I remember being surprised at how good and effective Tom's rise back up to the top was with this album...it truly began to peak in the hot summer of '90...I was driving from Boulder all the way down to the bro's spot in South Florida...I recall this, full moon, rolling through the red clay- and pine-lined roads of Mississippi -- and had it on through most of the Florida panhandle, too...big-time sublime, timeless -- magic!

Yep, this one got tons of play on many road trips.  Still love it.
i miss tommy 🖤

I don't know which is more impressive, that Joe Walsh opened for Tom Petty, or that you saw them both in 1917.

Rest In Peace Tom and thank you for the wonderful gifts of music.  So sad.  Too young.

Forgettable Petty. Pleasant enough.

corny
Not surprising that Petty's return to prominence began with his adoption on this album of the Wilbury ambience. Of course, his last two albums with the Heartbreakers, Mojo and Hypnotic Eye, are hallmarks of his continuing growth as a songwriter and genre embracer.
TP's audacious.
I'm loving the classic Tom Petty I've been hearing here. Thanks Bill!
What an amazing album.

Pedestrian lyrics and production. It's an album filler.

Wow
What do I hear - something much larger and deeper
like anything on that scale
if you are to close you will not see it

A typical Tom Petty song:

Four or five grunted syllables.

Pause.

Four or five grunted syllables.

Repeat.
Pedestrian lyrics and production. It's an album filler.
As exciting as reading a telephone book. A name in the book... a name in the book. You were just etc. etc.
Forgettable Petty. Pleasant enough.

Yeah, I always liked the vibe of this song. Just perfect.

Did Tom Petty get neutered?

OK, that was harsh. I loves me some Petty— even the more mellow slower stuff— doesn't all have to be Change of Heart type stuff all the time...

But this is weak.

Great Album / Great Song
An excellent song from an excellent album by a superior songwriter, singer. Just love Petty...can you tell? S

Does it seem like there's been a lot more Tom Petty than usual here on RP?
kinda sad, desperate...hopeful. remember cruising Friday nights hoping you'd fall in love? seems like a million years ago..
You know, I find much more significance here than I did long ago. Sweet in its simplicity.
Shouldn't the album title be "Traveling Wilbury's Vol. 2."?

Petty makes well crafted pop. This has a Roy Orbison kinda sound to the backing strings. He never tried to keep his sound "relevant" (like U2, for example) and instead stayed with what he knows and is comfortable working with. Admirable. Since his sound has remained organic (sans rap/techno/synth) I think radio has largely forgotten him.
Well stated. I agree.

Cool!
Did anyone catch Tom Petty on last night's Billboard Music Awards? I only watched it cause a friend said Green Day were performing, but it was mostly rap-crap. In any event, TP got a lifetime-type award. He's great!!!
I've never been crazy about Tom Petty, but I love this song.

That's pretty much what i think also, T. Petty (and also Chris Rea in my "list") is d o n e for me... thanks to Clear Channel exploitation. Thanks for expressing it nicely

Doesn't Petty say something about turning over the CD about halfway through this one? Pretty sure it was on this album.
It's this CD. It's something like, "attention CD listeners: This is the point where those listening on record or tape would have to stand up and flip the album over. And now....side 2..." (with strange barnyard noises in the background) I'm cool with Bonnie Raitt but when she went on that Grammy sweep this album got screwed for sure. TJ

hay I am the first to comment on this one, problem is it's sort of real non-commentable goes well with the complete set, sort of the depression set
