Sherry was a waitress at the only joint in town
She had a reputation as a girl who'd been around
Down Main Street after midnight with a brand new pack of cigs
A fresh one hangin' from her lips and a beer between her legs
She'd ride down to the river and meet with all her friends
The road goes on forever and the party never ends

Sonny was a loner he was older than the rest
He was going into the Navy but he couldn't pass the test
So he hung around town he sold a little pot
The law caught wind of Sonny and one day he got caught
But he was back in business when they set him free again
The road goes on forever and the party never ends

Sonny's playin' 8-ball at the joint where Sherry works
When some drunken outta towner put his hand up Sherry's skirt
Sonny took his pool cue laid the drunk out on the floor
Stuffed a dollar in her tip jar and walked on out the door
She's runnin' right behind him reachin' for his hand
The road goes on forever and the party never ends

They jumped into his pickup Sonny jammed her down in gear
Sonny looked at Sherry and said lets get on outta here
The stars were high above them and the moon was in the east
The sun was settin' on them when they reached Miami Beach
They got a hotel by the water and a quart of Bombay gin
The road goes on forever and the party never ends

They soon ran out of money but Sonny knew a man
Who knew some Cuban refugees that dealt in contraband
Sonny met the Cubans in a house just off the route
With a briefcase full of money and a pistol in his boot
The cards were on the table when The Law came bustin' in
The road goes on forever and the party never ends

The Cubans grabbed the goodies, Sonny grabbed the Jack
He broke a bathroom window and climbed on out the back
Sherry drove the pickup through the alley on the side
Where a lawman tackled Sonny and was readin' him his rights
She stepped into the alley with a single-shot .410
The road goes on forever and the party never ends

They left the lawman lyin' and they made their getaway
They got back to the motel just before the break of day
Sonny gave her all the money and he blew her a little kiss
If they ask you how this happened say I forced you into this
She watched him as his taillights disappeared around the bend
The road goes on forever and the party never ends

Its Main Street after midnight just like it was before
21 months later at the local grocery store
Sherry buys a paper and a cold 6-pack of beer
The headlines read that Sonny is goin' to the chair
She pulls back onto Main Street in her new Mercedes Benz
The road goes on forever and the party never ends

{#Beat} yay for mute. =1

Fabulous, I sit in the middle of Manhattan, and everytime I hear this it takes me on a little trip south (acid flashback, hmmmmm).

Overall I think Mr. Clark is a better songwriter, but Mr. Keen's 'West Textures' is hard to beat.

This song is like 'Freebird' to me: I've heard it a million times, live, covered, you name it, and I STILL really dig it. Neck, red? Check.

Agreed. "Eclectic" only goes so far.

I second that.

Fat, drunk and singing like Bob Dylan is no way to go through life, son
what a great song - listern to the lyrics - also check out Joe Ely's - live version on Live @ Antone's - it's awesome

What have you got against Texas?
Well, it is full of Texans...
Dang! Its the TexAss version of 'Lily, Rosemary & The Jack of Hearts'!
I'm hoping to maybe hearing some songs on RP from Robbie Earl's buddy from Texas, Eric Taylor, who hardly ever gets any airplay anywhere, yet plays the most amazing blues-infected Texan folk.
Thank you Bill
I realize there's a storytellin' goin' on so I don't want to interrupt, but I don't want to hear this one again either.

I love it! I have been living in Texas for about a year now and I have seen REK three times. There are a few versions of this song. you should play more REK!!! Love you guys Charlie in Texas :)
Is it a banjo in the background? Anyway....it's bit too countryesque for my taste.
Lyle Lovett and then this dreck - I want my money back
Nice to hear REK! I admit that this version of this song is a bit tame. But he does a nice version live and on his live album. "No Kinda Dancer" is a fine album and he has written a lot of very good songs.
frednic wrote:

Yeah. They're both from central Texas. REK went to Texas A&M where he once roomed with Lyle Lovett.
I'd much, much rather hear the Beer Run riff on this song.
This song goes on forever, and the earpain never ends.

Same neck of the woods if I'm not mistaken. I've seen them onstage together (on TeeVee)...

Joe Ely does a version of this that is perhaps a bit peppier. But to hear a fully-energized version, check out REK live! Woohoo!!!
theme song of our lives

Not a bad song, but REK sings one note. Terrible singer.

Joe Ely has a more rocked-up version of this song. Great storytelling.
Yawn, that drum beat is killing me - not the most interesting musically, guess it's the lyrics?
See REK live and you will have a good time and them boys can play. Good Texican music

Hearing REK right after Mark Knopfler's Camerado makes me want to see these two on stage together... and with Lyle Lovett, too.

What a perfect way to finish a hot South Texas afternoon on the San Antonio River (at work) and head home for a cool beverage. The road does go on forever and the party truly never ends. Robert Earl Keen will be at John T Floore in Helotes on September 2, 2007. Be there and enjoy this song live, under the stars, with 2,000 other fans who know the words to every REK song. Yes, there will be some Aggies there also. Thanks RP for playing REK after Lyle Lovett (his Aggie friend)and, then, Grateful Dead. What could be better!

I heard an interview with Joe Ely, and he said they've all done so many of each others' songs, sometimes they forget who wrote what. Bob Keen, Joe, Butch, Jimmie, the whole Lubbock gang. Townes is in a class by himself, but you knew that. Billy Joe Shaver is another whose influence reaches much farther than his notoriety, and he has the added (dis)advantage of having lived every word of his songs. If you like those folks, give a listen to JAMES HAND. He is an old-school cowboy singer-songwriter and sounds every bit the part. I think he plays a weekly gig at the Broken Spoke.

Sorry you feel that way. Us Texans (and T-sips) LOVE Robert Earl Keen, his college roommate, and a whole bunch of other spectacularly talented folks from the flatlands, wastelands, and hinterlands of Texas. See him live, you might change your tune. c.
Paints a vivid picture of a made-for-tv movie

This is classic REK, classic TX. When he starts this at his shows, the crowd usually goes crazy. Great song, great story, and great memories...

Studio version is worthless compared to live.
What happens when you play country music backwards? (Not an REK fan...sorry.)

This guy is an amazing song writer. Check out any of his albums, and you'll find gems in every one. I'm still trying to figure out who is the better writer, him or his collage roomate (this guy from my high school with an asymmetrical face and funny hair). Either way it makes an Aggie proud. That said, it is a little difficult sitting through this one when you are familiar with the live version.
That other guy's hair isn't funny- its just put way up high like Mrs Thompson's...

The Joe Ely version of this is one of my all-time favorite songs. Believe it or not, I've never heard the REK version; Thanks, Bill!

This is a great song....Don't really see what the previous debate is all about. How do you rate songs and performers relative to other performers is beyond me. Fact is, this song has attitude, gobs of it and it Moves Me, if you know what I mean..... Love it.
what a nice song, I like it really

A home grown favorite! It's great to have one of our own played and praised here amongst many of the worlds' greats. Give a listen to 'Picnic' if you can.

Robert Earl Keene... awesome in concert! Santa Cruz and a girl named Susie... a Saturday night and the party never ended. Talk about your happy banana! Damn near sent me south of the border on a Gringo Honeymoon.
Thanks Bill. Nice balance.
Joe Ely did a much better, slightly less-country version of this toon. Much moodier and contempletive
The fiddle on this is really fine!
There was a guy I used to work with that went on and on about REK. I didn't like that guy, and I don't really like this music either. 2
I'd heard this done by Joe Ely and thought it a better version.

From the song: "Sherry drove the pickup through the alley on the side Where a lawman tackled Sonny and was reading him his rights She stepped into the alley with a single shot .410" Not just a botched drug deal, but a dead cop in an alleyway. That'll get you the chair, in Florida at least. Even if he didn't pull the trigger and could prove it, it's a death during the commission of a felony. That's a capital crime.

Any truth to the rumor that this song is going to be made into a movie? It could work if you could stretch your imagination about the death penalty going that far. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm not sure that there has ever been a death sentence rendered based only on a botched drug deal. Anyway, it would be better than another movie based on a long forgotten TV show. The story in this song reminds me of Thelma & Louise (but with a man and a woman).
